Trinity Lutheran Church Proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ since W. Penn Street, Bedford, PA Phone: (814) Website: Office Hours: Monday-Friday; 8 am-noon & 1-3:30 pm For Emergency Contact after Office Hours: Pr Weinhold (410) Pr Short (814) The First Sunday In Lent Sunday, March 10, 2019 Eucharists at 8:30 and 11:00 am Sunday School & Adult Forum at 9:45 am ~ Today s Hymns ~ Gathering Hymn: #321 Eternal Lord Of Love Communion Hymns: #650 In Christ There Is No East or West #326 Bless Now, O God, the Journey #496 One Bread, One Body Sending Hymn: #618 Guide Me Ever, Great Redeemer ~ Today s Collect ~ P: O Lord God, you led your people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide us now, so that, following your Son, we may walk safely through the wilderness of this world toward the life you alone can give, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

~ Today s Readings ~ The First Reading: Deuteronomy 26:1-11 L: A Reading from Deuteronomy. When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, "Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us." When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, you shall make this response before the Lord your God: "A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me." You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house. L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Psalmody: Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16 Please join in singing the congregational refrain: Cantor: Those who dwell in the shelter of the Most High and abide in the shade of the Almighty say to the Lord: My refuge, my stronghold, my God in whom I trust. Refrain.

Cantor: Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you God has commanded the angels, to keep you all your ways. Refrain. Cantor: They shall bear you upon their hands lest you strike your foot against a stone. On the lion and viper you will tread and trample the young lion and the dragon. Refrain. Cantor: You set your love on me so I will save you, protect you for you know my name. When you call I shall answer: I am with you, I will save you in distress and give you glory. Refrain. The Second Reading: Romans 10:8-13 L: A Reading from Romans. "The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, "No one who believes in him will be put to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Gospel Acclamation Please rise and join in singing the Gospel Acclamation s Refrain: Cantor: One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. Refrain. Holy Gospel: Luke 4:1-13 D: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 4 th Chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread." Jesus answered him, "It

is written, "One does not live by bread alone.' " Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, "To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." Jesus answered him, "It is written, "Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.' " Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, "He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,' and "On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.' " Jesus answered him, "It is said, "Do not put the Lord your God to the test.' " When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. D: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. ~ Today s Prayers & Intercessions ~ We pray for the Church: that our Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting, and charitable works may nurture our faith and renew our spirits as we journey toward the cross and resurrection. Lord, in your mercy We pray for or the grace of awareness: that we may slow down, renounce the distractions of daily life, discern God s voice, and listen to His words. Lord, in your mercy We pray for the gifts of the Land: that our homes may be places where graceful hospitality is experienced and shown. Lord, in your mercy We pray for all who hunger, particularly children: that our hearts may be open to sharing our bounty with all who are in need. Lord, in your mercy We pray for all who fast during this season: that they may grow in their awareness that God is the source and strength of their life. Lord, in your mercy We pray for all who exercise power: that they may be good stewards of the authority entrusted to them, advocate for truth, and use their influence to promote the common good. Lord, in your mercy We pray for the sick, and those who mercifully tend and care for them. We remember ; that patience, comfort, healing and strength might be theirs. Lord, in your mercy

For all who have fled oppression or violence: that God will protect them on their journey and guide them to new communities where they can live in peace and safety. We pray for those who have died to this life, and those who mourn their passing, especially Rest eternal grant them, O Lord; And may light eternal shine un them. Lord, in your mercy We pray with all the Saints who bear witness to the Glory of God, especially St Gregory, ancient bishop and doctor of the church, St Paul the Apostle, St Luke the Evangelist, and all the Faithful Witnesses: that with them we might focus our lives on the redeeming mercies of God and acts of compassion and kindness to our neighbors.
