By his coming give to all the people of the world knowledge of your salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

2 ~ Today s Readings ~ The First Reading: Malachi 3:1-4 L: A Reading from Malachi. See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Psalmody: Luke 1:68-79 Please join in singing the congregational refrain: Cantor: Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, who has come to his people to set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Savior, born of the house of his servant David. Refrain. Cantor: Through his holy prophets God promised of old. To save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us. To show mercy to our ancestors, and to remember his holy covenant. Refrain. Cantor: This is the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies. Free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight, all the days of our life. Refrain. Cantor: And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give people knowledge of salvation, by the forgiveness of all their sins. Refrain. Cantor: In tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us. To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Refrain.

3 The Second Reading: Philippians 1:3-11 L: A Reading from Philippians. I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Gospel Acclamation Please rise and join in singing the Gospel Acclamation s Refrain: Cantor: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths; all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Holy Gospel: Luke 3:1-6 D: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 3 rd Chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord. In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: "Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and

4 the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.' " D: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. ~ Today s Prayers & Intercessions ~ For the Church: that we may make ready a way for the Lord: make a straight path for God in our hearts, within our families, and in our workplaces. Lord in your mercy For the grace to reflect: that we might use this advent season to look truthfully at ourselves and find the areas where we have not responded well to the call of God. Lord in your mercy For the strength to repent: that, recognizing the sin in our lives, we might learn to live in better ways and want only things that are good, faithful, and true. Lord in your mercy For all church leaders: especially Bishops, pastors, deacons, and teachers: that they may share with wisdom and integrity the truths and realities of the God of creation. Lord in your mercy. For hope: that our hearts might be firmly set on the works and promises of God. And that we might eagerly await nothing more than the Christ child on Christmas morn. Lord in your mercy. For refugees and all who have been impacted by violence: that they will find strength in the Gospel and that God might move in the hearts of others to share of their abundance. Lord in your mercy For those who struggle to find health and wholeness: especially, that they may know new strength with each passing day and that others may come to their aid in helpful and compassionate ways. Lord in your mercy For all who have departed from this life and rest in the care of God: especially, that they may have rest in the care of their creator and that those who mourn may know hope and consolation in the works and promises of God. Lord in your mercy. For peace within families, on our city streets, in faith communities and amongst nations: that God will inspire all to respect the dignity of one another and to work for justice and peace. Lord in your mercy.

The Sestercentennial Corner As we know, slavery became a very controversial issue during the late 1850s; an issue that would eventually lead to the American Civil War. During this time, across Bedford County, the disagreement and division regarding slavery was deepening. However, church records indicate that Trinity had taken a very strong stand against slavery as early as 1843, stating slavery was oppressive in its character and dishonorable to God and man. If you ve not done so already Would you please consider naming Trinity to receive a special Legacy Gift from your Estate? By doing so, you will assist those who follow us to continue to share Faithful and Meaningful Christian Ministries with the Families of Trinity and our Bedford Community!
