4 WE WORSHIP THE LORD BY LISTENING TO HIS WORD FIRST READING: Jeremiah 31:31-34 The renewed covenant will not be breakable, but like the old covenant it will expect the people to live upright lives. To know the Lord means that one will defend the cause of the poor and needy (Jer. 22:16). The renewed covenant is possible only because the Lord will forgive iniquity and not remember sin. Our hope lies in a God who forgets. 31 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, Know the LORD, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. 5 SECOND READING: Romans 3:19-28 Paul s words stand at the heart of the preaching of Martin Luther and other Reformation leaders. No human beings make themselves right with God through works of the law. We are brought into a right relationship with God through the divine activity centered in Christ s death. This act is a gift of grace that liberates us from sin and empowers our faith in Jesus Christ. 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no human being will be justified in his sight by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. A: The word of the Lord. 7 GOSPEL: John 8:31-36 L: The Holy Gospel according to JOHN, the 8TH chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus speaks of truth and freedom as spiritual realities known through his word. He reveals the truth that sets people free from sin. 31 Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. 33 They answered him, We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. L: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. CHILDREN'S MESSAGE SERMON PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION A: Longing for God s will to be fulfilled among us, we pray persistently for the church, the world, and all people in need. Brief Silence A: Holy God, work in your church across denominational and cultural divisions to form us into a more complete expression of your holy community. Show the world your likeness through us. 8 A: By rain, rivers, and oceans, remind us how your word flows through this world, surrounding us with grace. Keep us always in the covenant that is sealed in water and Spirit. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. A: Free us from the lies we tell ourselves or others in order to justify our words and actions. Lead us to speak honestly and to listen humbly, and reveal your truth among us. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. A: Be a stronghold for people who are in danger this day (especially, Jay Harker, Lovella Neukam, Kathy Goss, David Weisman, Mike Burris, Starr Kieffner, Evan White, Chris & Bob Bolte, and for Christians and all individuals who suffer from persecution). In your righteous presence cause the evil that surrounds them to flee, and clothe them with your mercy. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. Continue making all things new. Seal your covenant with humankind, and write your law on our hearts. Make repentance a regular habit for us so that forgiveness abounds. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. A: Guide all the saints in proclaiming the good news of salvation in Christ. Bring your people eternally into Christ s presence on the last day. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. Other intercessions may be added. L: Enfold all things in your compassion, O God, and bring us into your life through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. 10 OFFERTORY PRAYER L: Let us pray. Blessed are you, C: O Lord our God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts. With them we offer ourselves to your service and dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made, for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen WE WORSHIP THE LORD BY RECEIVING THE LORD'S SUPPER BRIEF ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS L: Blessed be the holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. C: Amen. L: Let us confess our sin, calling for God's transforming power. Brief Silence Source of all life, C: we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. 10

11 L: God hears our cry and sends the Spirit to change us and to empower our lives in the world. Our sins are forgiven, God s love is unconditional, and we are raised up as God s people who will always be made new, in the name of Jesus Christ. C: Amen. FAITH STATEMENT We believe in God above us, maker and sustainer of all life, of sun and moon, of water and earth, of male and female. We believe in God beside us, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, born of a woman s womb, servant of the poor. He was tortured and nailed to a tree. A man of sorrows, he died forsaken. He descended into the earth to the place of death. On the third day he rose from the tomb. He ascended into heaven to be everywhere present, and his kingdom will come on earth. We believe in God within us, the Holy Spirit of Pentecostal fire, life-giving breath of the Church, spirit of healing and forgiveness, source of resurrection and of life everlasting. Amen. 11

12 LORD S PRAYER L: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. NURSERY: St. John's loves having children in church, but we want parents to know that we do have an unmanned nursery available downstairs in our Education Wing if needed. The nursery is wired for sound so you can still participate in the service. Take the ramp downstairs which is located next to the upstairs restroom. The nursery is located on the left-hand side of the long hallway four doors down. HANDICAP SEATING: The church council asks that you please remember to reserve the shortened seating in the middle of the sanctuary for those who need them. Thank you. 14

15 HEARING DEVICES: St. John's offers "Hearing Devices" to individuals who need them. They are located in a basket in the Narthex. They have been updated and are ready to be used. The batteries are not in the device but are in the basket and need to be installed to use. If you wear a hearing aid you will need to remove it and put the ear bud directly into your ear. You are welcomed to bring your own ear buds. If you have any questions or need any help contact Linus Mann at Our Pastor uses a microphone but sometimes extra help is needed to help enhance your worship experience. 17 ANNOUNCEMENTS THANK YOU to Carol Zehr for leading Worship this morning. 20 TH ORDINATION ANNIVERSARY: There is a basket in the back of church for individual cards or personal gifts for Pastor Catherine for Pastor Appreciation and 20 th Ordination Anniversary. The basket will be available Oct 28 th and Nov 4 th. Pastor Catherine was ordained November 14, SUNDAY SCHOOL OUTREACH PROJECT: This year the Sunday School is supporting the Dubois County Department of Child Services. They are collecting new clothes with the tags still on them and money to buy new clothes for children that are in the Foster Care System. They will be handing over the first batch of items before Christmas and a second batch in May. Everyone is invited to take part. FAMILY FUN NIGHT: St. John s is hosting Family Fun Night on Sunday, November 4 th. Dinner starts at 5:00 p.m. Hayrides begin at 6:00 p.m. S mores by the fire around 7:00 p.m. Please bring any outdoor games you can share and a chair/blanket to sit on. There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex so we have an idea of how many will be attending. This is a Dubois County Lutheran Church cooperative ministry event. ALL SAINTS SUNDAY is November 4 th. We will take time during the service to remember the members of St. John s we have lost this year. We hope you can be a part of this important worship service. 17

18 THANKOFFERING SUNDAY: The Women of the ELCA will be celebrating Thankoffering Sunday on November 25th. This year will be different than in the past, they are not asking you to bring produce or other food and hygiene donations. Instead they will be collecting money for the National WELCA Organization and a local charity to be named soon. Thankoffering donations will be accepted until December 9 th. Thank you in advance for your generosity. COOKIES FOR DUBOIS COUNTY COMMUNITY MEAL: Reminder to those who have agreed to donate cookies, brownies or other sweets, please place your donation in the kitchen or on the pew outside the Conference Room by November 4th. Thank you. GROUNDS CARETAKER: The Property Team is taking bids for Grounds caretaker. Please contact Paul Mann for a copy of the contract and job description. Bids will be accepted until November 15 th. MONTHLY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP: The Chronicles of Narnia for Adults C.S. Lewis is one of the most famous Christian writers of the twentieth century and one of his most famous works is a series of children s novels called the Chronicles of Narnia. While there is indeed much that children can get out these short novels, we make a mistake if we think these are stories merely for kids. The images, symbolism, and allegory in these novels are worthy of looking at again as adults. Therefore, whether you have not read the Chronicles of Narnia since you were young, whether you read them all once a year, or whether you ve never read them at all before, you are invited to read them again. The next meeting will be at 6:30 pm Sunday October 28th at Redeemer, where The Last Battle will be discussed. Even if you ve missed a meeting or several, it s not too late to join in the discussion. 18

19 ANNUAL THANKSGIVING SUPPER: On Saturday, November 3 rd St. James Lutheran Church in Holland will hold its Annual Thanksgiving Supper. Serving will start at 4 p.m. and is buffet style for dine in or carry out. Adult dinners are $10.00 and Children dinners are $4.00. There will also be a Goodie shop with baked goods. FLEA MARKET in the Community Center at Stendal, Indiana, Saturday, November 10 th 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Food served by the St. Peter s Lutheran Church Group beginning with Breakfast at 7:30 p.m. (Sweet rolls, sausage, biscuits, gravy, drinks) Serving throughout the day.
