2 ~ Today s Readings ~ The First Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34 L: A Reading from Jeremiah: The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt--a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Psalmody: Psalm 51:1-12 Please join in singing the congregational refrain: Cantor: Have mercy on me, God in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offense. O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from sin. Refrain. Cantor: My offense truly I know them; my sin is always before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned; what is evil in your sight I have done. Refrain. Cantor: A pure heart create for me, O God, put a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, nor deprive me of your praise. Refrain. Cantor: Give me again the joy of your help; with a spirit of fervor sustain me. O Lord, open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise. Refrain. 2
3 The Second Reading: Hebrews 5:5-10 L: A Reading from Hebrews: So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Gospel Acclamation Please rise and join in singing the Gospel Acclamation s Refrain: Cantor: Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Holy Gospel: John 12:20-33 D: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 12 th Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. D: Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. "Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say--"father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this 3
4 world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. D: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Deacon s Intercessions: We pray for the Church: that the Holy Spirit will continue to draw us unto himself, gather us around the Word and Sacraments, nurture our Faith, and send us to share hope and healing with our neighbors. Lord, in your mercy We pray that we may remain attentive and responsive to the call of Christ in our lives to the New Covenant that he has written on our hearts that we might be peacemakers and agents of grace to creation. Lord, in your mercy We pray that bishops, pastors, priests, deacons, missionaries, and theologians might focus on teaching the faith and leading the faithful in ways which are sound and true and pleasing in the sight of God. Lord, in your mercy We pray that through the struggles and challenges of this life, we may not despair, but respond with deeper devotion and obedience to the Lord who brings us to eternal life. Lord, in your mercy We pray for the youth of our community and our parish family: that they may be blessed with parents, teachers and mentors who will care for them and guide them well as they grow and mature. Lord, in your mercy We pray for those who guide the nations, those who serve in offices of government, those who serve in the military, and those who protect and serve us: that they may be kept safe, and that contention and animosity might give way to trust and mutual respect. Lord, in your mercy We pray for physicians, nurses, and caregivers, and for all those who long for strength and wholeness, especially that God, in his mercy, will uphold them, and bring them patience and comfort through their days of recuperation. Lord, in your mercy We remember those who have died in the faith, especially those whom we love and mourn that we may know the Spirit s consolation and, like a grain of wheat that falls into the earth and dies, rise with Christ and those who have gone before us, and bear much fruit. Lord, in your mercy 4
5 We remember the saints and witnesses of old, especially St Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem St Joseph, Protector and Guardian of our Lord St Benedict, Abbot and St Gabriel the Archangel: that, with those who have walked the Holy Way, we may also come, on the last day, to the Blessings of the Kingdom. Adult & All-Parish Ministries The Great Covenants ~ Adult Forum Series during Lent Sunday Mornings; 9:45 am Throughout history, the Lord has established covenants with His people, through which he has bound himself and his people together. As we journey through Lent this year, we are exploring 5 of the more significant covenants which are part of our Judeo-Christian Tradition: with Creation (Adam & Eve and Noah), with Abraham, with Moses, Jeremiah s covenant, and with Christ at the Last Supper. Through these covenants we encounter our Lord s steadfast and unfailing love and are called to live our lives with faith and devotion. These sessions are led by Pr Short & Pr Weinhold. Parishioners and friends are encouraged to join us! Our next series will begin after the Easter Holidays, on Sunday, April 15, and will be a review of the resources contained in Evangelical Lutheran Worship, our red hymnal. We ll learn about the rich history and benefits of the Lectionary and the Liturgical calendars, the various Settings or Rites of the mass and the weekday prayer offices, and other materials which enrich our worship life. This will be informative for life-long Lutherans as well as those somewhat new to the tradition. Lamentations ~ A Lenten Bible Study Wednesday Evenings; 6:00 pm Lamentations is a series of poems, written soon after the destruction of the Temple and the time of Israel s Babylonian Captivity, which give voice to the hardship, the misery, and the violence which the Hebrew People endured through those very difficult days. We ll listen to the expressions of their struggles, and consider this Book s significance and implications for our lives, as we may encounter challenges and struggles.
