Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 357 Division Street Elgin, IL Phone: Radio Broadcast on WRMN 1410AM on Sunday at 9:30am Website: Reformation October 29 th, :30am (Keyboard music in worship during October will feature the hymns of Martin Luther, other German composers and arrangers.) (Please silence your cell phone) Gathering Gathering Music Toccata, D Minor J.S. Bach Welcome & Announcements Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them. Matthew 18:20
(Please stand as you are able, verse 3 will be sung by the ensemble only) A Mighty Fortress 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a sword and shield victorious; he breaks the cruel oppressor s rod and wins salvation glorious. The old satanic foe has sworn to work us woe! With craft and dreadful might he arms himself to fight. On earth he has no equal. 2 No strength of ours can match his might! We would be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight, whom God himself elected. You ask who this may be? The Lord of hosts is he! Christ Jesus, mighty Lord, God s only Son, adored. He holds the field victorious. 3 Though hordes of devils fill the land all threat ning to devour us, we tremble not, unmoved we stand; they cannot overpow r us. Let this world s tyrant rage; in battle we ll engage! His might is doomed to fail; God s judgment must prevail! One little word subdues him. 4 God s Word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes, who fear it; for God himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit. Were they to take our house, goods, honor, child, or spouse, though life be wrenched away, they cannot win the day. The kingdom s ours forever! 2
(Please be seated) Gathering P We gather for worship in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen Welcome & Announcements Reformer - Martin Luther Strengthen for Service, Lord Healey Willan Mixed Ensemble Reading: Romans 3: Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no human being will be justified in his sight by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. 3
(Please stand as you are able) Gospel Acclamation 1 We all believe in one true God, who created earth and heaven, the Father, who to us in love has the right of children given. He in soul and body feeds us; all we need his hand provides us; through all snares and perils leads us. Watching that no harm betide us, he cares for us by day and night. All things are governed by his might. 2 We all believe in Jesus Christ, his own Son, our Lord, possessing an equal Godhead, throne, and might, source of ev ry grace and blessing; born of Mary, virgin mother, by the power of the Spirit, Word made flesh, our elder brother; that the lost might life inherit, was put to death upon the cross, and raised by God victorious. 3 We all confess the Holy Ghost who, in highest heaven dwelling with God the Father and the Son, comforts us beyond all telling; who the church, his own creation, keeps in unity of spirit. Here forgiveness and salvation daily come through Jesus merit. All flesh shall rise, and we shall be in bliss with God eternally. Amen 4
Gospel: John 8:31-36 P The Holy Gospel according to Saint John the eighth chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. 31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. 33 They answered him, We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. P C The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (Please be seated) Sermon Pastor Jeff Mikyska 5
(Please stand as you are able) The Church of Christ, in Every Age 1 The church of Christ, in ev ry age beset by change, but Spirit-led, must claim and test its heritage and keep on rising from the dead. 2 Across the world, across the street, the victims of injustice cry for shelter and for bread to eat, and never live before they die. 3 Then let the servant church arise, a caring church that longs to be a partner in Christ s sacrifice, and clothed in Christ s humanity. 4 For he alone, whose blood was shed, can cure the fever in our blood, and teach us how to share our bread and feed the starving multitude. 5 We have no mission but to serve in full obedience to our Lord; to care for all, without reserve, and spread his liberating word. (Please be seated) Offering Music Prelude, D Minor J.S. Bach 6
(Please remain seated) Offering Response 7
Confession and Forgiveness P When Satan tells me I am a sinner he comforts me immeasurably, since Christ died for sinners. - Martin Luther C We have sinned against you, and done what is wrong in your eyes. We are well aware of the wrong we do: the words we speak which wound, the unloving thoughts and actions which hurt others and ourselves. Forgive us. P We are forgiven. Christ died for me. He made His righteousness mine and made my sin His own; and if He made my sin His own, then I do not have it, and I am free. C Thanks be to God. Prayers of the People The assisting minister will end each prayer petition with: A Lord, in your mercy, The congregation will respond with: C 8 hear our prayer. The prayers will end with: P Here I stand, I can do no other, God help me. C Amen
Meal P We remember the way that Jesus showed us His love: On the evening before He died, He had supper with His friends. During the meal, He took the loaf of bread, gave thanks for it, broke it and then passed it around with these words: This is my body broken for you. Eat this and remember Me. And, after the meal He took the cup of wine, 9
C gave thanks for it and then passed it around with these words: This is my blood shed for you. Drink this and remember Me. And now, every time we eat bread like this, and every time we drink wine like this, We remember Jesus, and His everlasting love. The Lord s Prayer P Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: C 10 Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen
Communion Our table is open to all who wish to share in the sacrament. Non-communing children and adults are invited to receive a blessing. Please kneel if you are able or stand at the communion rail. If you would rather have grape juice, a wheat wafer or a gluten-free wafer, please let the communion assistant know. Communion Music Moderato G.P. Telemann Andante Karl Heinrich Graun (Please stand as you are able) Blessing after Communion P May the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen us and keep us in his grace. C Amen 11
Sending Thy Strong Word 1 Thy strong word did cleave the darkness; at thy speaking it was done. For created light we thank thee, while thine ordered seasons run. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia without end! 2 Lo, on those who dwelt in darkness, dark as night and deep as death, broke the light of thy salvation, breathed thine own life-breathing breath. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia without end! 3 Thy strong Word bespeaks us righteous; bright with thine own holiness, glorious now, we press toward glory, and our lives our hopes confess. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise to thee who light dost send! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia without end! 4 From the cross thy wisdom shining breaketh forth in conqu ring might; from the cross forever beameth all thy bright redeeming light. Alleluia! Alleluia! 12
Benediction P Almighty God, Father, +Son, and Holy Spirit, bless us now and forever. C Amen Sending Forth the People of God P And though this world with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us.
