C: Amen.

~ Today s Readings ~ The First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 L: A Reading from Isaiah. Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses' arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Psalmody: Paslm 72:1-7, Please join in singing the congregational refrain: Cantor: O God, give judgement to the king, to a king s son your justice, that he may judge your people in justice and your poor in right judgement. Refrain. Cantor: In his days justice shall flourish and peace till the moon fails. He shall rule from sea to sea, from the Great River to a sea, Refrain. Cantor: The kings of Tarshish and the isles pay tribute. The kings of Sheba and Seba shall bring him gifts. Before him all rulers shall fall prostrate, all nations shall serve him. Refrain. Cantor: For he shall save the poor when they cry and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. Refrain. The Second Reading: Ephesians 3:1-12 L: A Reading from Ephesians. This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles for surely you have already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will

enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God's grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Gospel Acclamation Please rise and join in singing the Gospel Acclamation s Refrain: Cantor: We have seen His star at its rising, and have come to worship Him. Refrain. Holy Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 D: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 2 nd Chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord. In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: "And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.' " Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him

homage." When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. D: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. ~ Today s Prayers & Intercessions ~ We pray for the Church: that, through our words and deeds, we may be a Light to those who are searching for a sign of hope. Lord, in your mercy We pray for God s blessing on the New Year: that God will fill the coming days with peace of mind, body and spirit, renew the gifts of the Spirit within us, and inspire us with new ways to share the Good News. Lord, in your mercy We pray for a spirit of greater trust: that, like the Wise Men, God s Light may guide us through the unknowns of the coming days, as we rely more deeply on His love and care for us. Lord, in your mercy We pray for a deeper awareness of our gifts and talents: that like the magi, we may offer all our gifts to God and use them in the service of His creation. Lord, in your mercy We pray for migrants and refugees: that God will help them to reach places of safety, establish new lives, and experience justice and respect in their new communities. Lord, in your mercy We pray for a renewed devotion to the scriptures and daily prayer: that we may make time for God each day of this new year, and be attentive to God s invitations and promptings in our hearts. Lord, in your mercy We pray for greater unity and cooperation within the human family: that God will heal old wounds, open hearts to the talents of others, and help us to work together against hatred, violence, poverty, and addictions. Lord, in your mercy We pray for those who govern, especially the members of the our new Congress: that God will guide them to dialogue in truthful, open, and constructive ways, and address the pressing issues of our time. Lord, in your mercy

We pray for the sick, and their caregivers. Especially today we remember : that the Spirit of God will be, for them, an abundant source of comfort, healing, and strength. Lord, in your mercy We pray for all who have died and those who mourn, especially : that the Light of God s mercy and love may lead them into the joy of God s eternal presence. Lord, in your mercy With joy, we give thanks for the witness of the Saints, especially St Basil, St Gregory Nazianus, and St Gregory Nyssa. That, with them, we may study and learn the faith, and share the embracing love of our merciful savior with others. Thank You, once again, for your generous support of Trinity s ministries, in so many ways! Trinity s 2018 Charitable Outreach Ministries A Beautiful Thing! Through our special appeals, gifts to the Allegheny Synod and our mission partners, and our partnership with the local Salvation Army, we have provided more than $60,000 in charitable aid to our neighbors this past year. THANK YOU for your kind and generous stewardship! The Sestercentennial Corner In early 1871, only 22 years after it was dedicated, Trinity Lutheran Church on Bedford s Public Square was demolished and the construction of a new structure (our present church) was begun. Details are sketchy as to the reason for taking down a relatively new building. One account says a fire gravely damaged the first church, another mentions the courthouse, Presbyterian church and the 1849 Trinity church looked so similar that a change was desired by the congregation. Regardless the reason, the cornerstone for the new church was laid on July 22, Leaving a Legacy to your Faith If you ve not done so already, would you please consider naming Trinity to receive a special Legacy Gift from your Estate? By doing so, you will assist those who follow us to continue to share Faithful and Meaningful Christian Ministries with the Families of Trinity and our Bedford Community!
