1 Trinity Lutheran Church Proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ since W. Penn Street, Bedford, PA Phone: (814) Website: Office Hours: Monday-Friday; 8 am-noon & 1-3:30 pm For Emergency Contact after Office Hours: Pr Weinhold (410) Pr Short (814) The Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost Sunday, September 23, 2018 Eucharists at 8:30 am & 11:00 am Sunday School & Adult Forum at 9:45 am ~ Today s Hymns ~ Gathering Hymn: #843 Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness Communion Hymns: #595 Jesus Loves Me! #641 All Are Welcome #613 Thy Holy Wings Sending Hymn: #431 O Christ, What Can It Mean For Us ~ Today s Collect ~ P: O God, our teacher and guide, you draw us to yourself and welcome us as beloved children. Help us to lay aside all envy and selfish ambition, that we may walk in your ways of wisdom and understanding as servants of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen.
2 ~ Today s Readings ~ The First Reading: Jeremiah 11:18-20 L: A Reading from Jeremiah: It was the Lord who made it known to me, and I knew; then you showed me their evil deeds. But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. And I did not know it was against me that they devised schemes, saying, "Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name will no longer be remembered!" But you, O Lord of hosts, who judge righteously, who try the heart and the mind, let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have committed my cause. L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Psalmody: Psalm 54 Please join in singing the congregational refrain: Cantor: O God, save me by your name; by your power, uphold my cause. O God hear my prayer; listen to the words of my mouth. Refrain. Cantor: For the proud have risen against me, ruthless foes seek my life. They have no regard for God. They have no regard for God. Refrain. Cantor: But I have God for my help. The Lord upholds my life. I will sacrifice to you with willing heart and praise your name, O Lord, for it is good. Refrain. The Second Reading: James 3:13-4:3, 7-8 L: A Reading from James: Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those
3 who make peace. Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Gospel Acclamation Please rise and join in singing the Gospel Acclamation s Refrain: Cantor: God has called us through the Gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Holy Gospel: Mark 9:30-37 D: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 9 th Chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord. They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again." But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the way?" But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all." Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me." D: D: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ.
4 ~ Today s Prayers & Intercessions ~ For the Church: that we may be servants of one another, particularly of those in need, and thus bear witness to God s love for everyone. Lord in your mercy For a love of what is good: that we might be motivated by the desire to do what is right just because it is right and learn to seek the Will of God in this world regardless of how we may be rewarded for doing so. Lord in your mercy For the poor and powerless in our society: that we may hear their voices, understand their pain, and humbly walk along side of them through life s challenges. Lord in your mercy For victims of hurricanes and other natural disasters: that they may remain safe, that they may have hope, and that others may come to their aid now and in the days ahead. Lord in your mercy. For the members of Congress: that God will give them wisdom and insight as they address the issues that challenge our society. Lord in your mercy For all who are ill: especially, that they may know the certainty of God s love, that their minds and bodies might find themselves renewed and restored, and that others may surround them with aid and assistance. Lord in your mercy. For all who have died: that Christ will call them close to himself and welcome them to share in the joy of God s presence forever. Especially... For peace: that God would change our hearts from pride, selfishness, and greed and teach us to live and work in ways that are good for all people so that lasting peace might finally be known. Lord in your mercy
