Penn Street, Bedford, PA Phone: (814) Website: Office Hours: Monday-Friday; 8 am-noon & 1-3:30 pm For Emergency Contact after Office Hours: Pr Weinhold (410) Pr Short (814) The Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost Sunday, September 16, 2018 Eucharists at 8:30 am & 11:00 am Sunday School & Adult Forum at 9:45 am ~ Today s Hymns ~ Gathering Hymn: #311 Hail To The Lord s Anointed Communion Hymns: #783 Praise & Thanks & Adoration #798 Will You Come and Follow Me #667 Take Up Your Cross, the Savior Said Sending Hymn: #660 Lift High The Cross ~ Today s Collect ~ P: Gracious God, through suffering and rejection you bring forth our salvation, and by the glory of the cross you transform our lives. Grant that, for the sake of the Gospel, we may turn from sin, take up our cross, and follow your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen.

~ Today s Readings ~ The First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-9 L: A Reading from Isaiah: The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty? All of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up. L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Psalmody: Psalm 116:1-9 Please join in singing the congregational refrain: Cantor: I love the Lord, for He has heard the cry of my appeal. The Lord was attentive to me in the day when I called. Refrain. Cantor: They surround me, the snares of death, with the anguish of the tomb; they caught me, sorrow and distress. I called, O God, deliver me. Refrain. Cantor: How gracious is the Lord. And just; our God has compassion. The Lord protects the simple hearts; I was helpless so Refrain. Cantor: The Lord has kept my soul from death, my feet from stumbling. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. Refrain. The Second Reading: James 3:1-12 L: A Reading from James: Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For

all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Gospel Acclamation Please rise and join in singing the Gospel Acclamation s Refrain: Cantor: May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord, through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. Holy Gospel: Mark 8:27-38 D: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 8 th Chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord. D: Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Then he began to teach them that the

Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." D: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. ~ Today s Prayers & Intercessions ~ D: We pray for the Church: that gathered by the Holy Spirit, washed in the Waters of Baptism, and nurtured with Holy Food, we may follow the Lord and lay down our lives in compassion and service for others. Lord, in your mercy C: Hear our prayer. D: We pray for bishops, pastors, deacons, missionaries, and all who are called to lead and guide the Church s ministry: that God will give them wisdom in addressing the wounds in the Church and guide them in renewing and restoring the community of faith. Lord, in your mercy D: We pray for those who teach and study the Faith, especially our Sunday School and Faith & Fun Club teachers and children, our youth, and our pastors and those who share in our Adult Forums and Bible Studies: that they may be diligent in their work, committed to their learning, and blessed by their participation. Lord, in your mercy D: We pray for a living and dynamic faith: that the Spirit will strengthen us to confront evil, show compassion for the wounded, work for peace and justice, and manifest God s reign amongst us. Lord, in your mercy... D: We pray for the poor, especially those among whom we live and work: that we may neither ignore them nor minimize their suffering, but open our hearts and extend our hands to assist them. Lord, in your mercy

D: We pray for those with health problems, those who have experienced abuse, those who have made poor choices in life, and for those who assist them: that they may know God s presence with them. Especially today we pray for Lord, in your mercy D: We pray for all who devote their lives to serving others: for emergency personnel, for aid workers, and for members of the military: that God will guide them, and strengthen them, each day. Lord, in your mercy D: We pray for all who have suffered loss through recent hurricanes and storms: that God will give them hope, and touch the hearts of many to assist them. Lord, in your mercy D: We pray for those who have died, and those who know the grief of loss, especially ; that they may rest in the shadow of the Lord s unfailing mercies and know the comfort and consolation of the Holy Spirit. Lord, in your mercy D: We pray for all the Saints: St Peter and St James, and especially St Matthew, Apostle of our Lord and Evangelist, whose ministry the Church celebrates this week: that following their example, we may be called from death to life and, with them, share in the joys of heaven.
