2 ~ Today s Readings ~ The First Reading: 2 Kings 2:1-12 L: A Reading from Second Kings: Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?" And he said, "Yes, I know; keep silent." Elijah said to him, "Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho." But he said, "As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they came to Jericho. The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?" And he answered, "Yes, I know; be silent." Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan." But he said, "As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you." Elisha said, "Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit." He responded, "You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not." As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha kept watching and crying out, "Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Psalmody: Psalm 50 Please join in singing the congregational refrain: Cantor: The God of gods, the Lord, has spoken and summoned the earth, from the rising of the sun to its setting. I find no fault with your sacrifices, your offerings are always before me. Refrain. 2

3 Cantor: Were I hungry, I would not tell you, for I own the world and all it holds. Do you think I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? Refrain. Cantor: Offer to God your sacrifice; to the Most High pay your vows. Call on me in the day of distress. I will free you and you shall honor me. Refrain. The Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 L: A Reading from Second Corinthians: And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus' sake. For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Gospel Acclamation Please rise and join in singing the Gospel Acclamation s Refrain: Cantor: This is my Son, my Chosen. Listen to Him! Holy Gospel: Mark 9:2-9 D: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 9 th Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. D: Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, "This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!" Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. D: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. 3

4 Deacon s Intercessions We pray for the Church: that our proclamation may be shaped by all the faithful throughout the globe and across the ages so that together we might proclaim the hope of Christ crucified and risen to all the world. Lord in your mercy, HEAR OUR PRAYER For patience and wisdom: that we might take the time to slow down and learn from those who are around us so that we might have peace and that we might learn to live good, balanced, and faithful lives. Lord in your mercy, For the grace to have hope: that we may recognize goodness of our God and that we might walk with confidence in his promises. Lord in your mercy, For the gift of new life: Especially, we rejoice at the birth of Alanna Elizabeth May she and all newborns find homes full of faith, love, and stability so that they may grow into people of faith, charity, and wisdom. Lord in your mercy, For happiness: That we might learn to see the blessings of God in the world around us and find reason to give thanks each and every day. Lord in your mercy, For all who are facing economic distress: that God will give them strength, open new opportunities for them, and fill their hearts with hope. Lord in your mercy, For all who are ill: especially Howard, Aliza, and Ann Becky and Harry Dorothy, Laura, and Pete Suella, Bob, and Peg Erle and Carmena Jean, Hans, and Irene Marian and Helen Bonnie, Olga, and Christopher that the power of God might bring loved ones to their side and health to their bodies. Lord in your mercy, For those who rest in the eternal kingdom of God: especially Mark, Edna and Nancy Richard and Shirley Lawson and Suzanne Harold and Don that they may find rest and restoration in the eternal presence of God. Lord in your mercy, For peace: that God will inspire world leaders to take bold steps to end violence and to promote justice through dialogue and understanding. Lord in your mercy, 4

Lent is a time of reflection and repentance in which we hear the call to conform our lives, more fully, to the call of the Gospel, and to be a people who seek to know and follow the Lord s way of life, marked by compassion and love, more faithfully. We are encouraged to pray with more intentionality to fast especially from the excess which we so often practice and to consider (and respond to) the needs of the poor, with greater patience, consistency and generosity.
