C: Amen.

2 ~ Today s Readings ~ The First Reading: Zephaniah 3:14-20 L: A Reading from Zephaniah. Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the Lord. L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Psalmody: Isaiah 12:2-6 Please join in singing the congregational refrain: Cantor: Truly, God is my salvation. I trust, I shall not fear. Cantor: For the Lord is my strength, my song, he became my savior. Cantor: With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Refrain. Cantor: Give thanks to the Lord, give praise to his name! Make his mighty deeds known to the peoples! Declare the greatness of his name, Refrain. Cantor: Sing a psalm to the Lord! For he has done glorious deeds, make them known to all the earth. Cantor: People of Zion, sing and shout for joy for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. Refrain.

3 The Second Reading: Philippians 4:4-7 L: A Reading from Philippians. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Gospel Acclamation Please rise and join in singing the Gospel Acclamation s Refrain: Cantor: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. Refrain. Holy Gospel: Luke 3:7-18 D: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 3 rd Chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord. John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, "We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?" In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, "Teacher, what should we do?" He said to them, "Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you." Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what should we do?" He said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation and be satisfied with your wages." As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into

4 his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. D: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. ~ Today s Prayers & Intercessions ~ We pray for the Church: that the People of God may rejoice in the life and salvation which our gracious Lord provides. Lord, in your mercy We pray for those whose ministries announce the coming of the Lord, especially our bishops, pastors, deacons, and missionaries: that their words and deeds may inspire and guide the flock, and fill us with hope. Lord, in your mercy We give thanks for God s gifts of Word and Sacraments: that gathered and nurtured by the Means of Grace our faith might grow and works of charity and love might flow forth in abundance. Lord, in your mercy We pray for all Advent-pilgrims: that the Spirit of God will cleanse us of greed, selfishness, narrowness of mind, and hardness of heart; and transform us to be a people of grace and light. Lord, in your mercy We pray for those who offer their lives to public service: that they may be guided by God s wisdom and fulfill their obligations faithfully. Lord, in your mercy We pray for those who feel overwhelmed by life s demands and challenges: that God s message of hope may fill their spirits with peace. Lord, in your mercy We give thanks for the resources of the earth, and pray that we may not abuse these gifts for profit and greed, but strive to protect them, use them wisely, and ensure their benefits for the generations to follow. Lord, in your mercy We pray for the sick, and those who bring them comfort and aid, especially : that the healing and renewing mercies of God might bring them strength and wholeness. Lord, in your mercy We pray for those who rest from their labors and abide in God s peace: that at Christ s appearing, they may rise with him to the light of heaven, and rejoice with all the saints and angels of God. Especially today we remember Lord, in your mercy We pray with thanksgiving as we remember the saints of old especially St John the Baptist, St Lazarus, St Thomas the Apostle, and St Frances Xavier Cabrini that with them, we may bear faithful witness to the love of God and faithfully tend to the needs of our families and neighbors. Lord, in our mercy
