2 ~ Today s Readings ~ The First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 L: A Reading from Deuteronomy: The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet. This is what you requested of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said: "If I hear the voice of the Lord my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die." Then the Lord replied to me: "They are right in what they have said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable. But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak that prophet shall die." L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Psalmody: Psalm 111 Please join in singing the congregational refrain: Cantor: God s works are justice and truth, God s precepts are all of them sure, standing firm for ever and ever; they are made in uprightness and truth. Refrain. Cantor: God has sent deliverance to his people and established his covenant for ever. Holy is God s name, to be feared. Refrain. Cantor: To fear the Lord is the first stage of wisdom; all who do so prove themselves wise. God s praise shall last for ever! Refrain. The Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 L: A Reading from First Corinthians: Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we know that "all of us possess knowledge." Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. Anyone who claims to know something does not yet have the necessary knowledge; but anyone who loves God is known by him. Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that "no idol in the world really exists," and that "there is no 2

3 God but one." Indeed, even though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth as in fact there are many gods and many lords yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. It is not everyone, however, who has this knowledge. Since some have become so accustomed to idols until now, they still think of the food they eat as food offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. "Food will not bring us close to God." We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if others see you, who possess knowledge, eating in the temple of an idol, might they not, since their conscience is weak, be encouraged to the point of eating food sacrificed to idols? So by your knowledge those weak believers for whom Christ died are destroyed. But when you thus sin against members of your family, and wound their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of their falling, I will never eat meat, so that I may not cause one of them to fall. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Gospel Acclamation Please rise and join in singing the Gospel Acclamation s Refrain: Cantor: The people that sat in darkness have seen a great light; For those who sit in death s shadow, the light has dawned. Holy Gospel: Mark 1:21-28 D: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 1 st Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. D: They went to Capernaum; and when the Sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they 3

4 kept on asking one another, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. D: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Deacon s Intercessions For the Church: that the teachings of Jesus might guide and challenge us as we seek to live lives of faith, love, and service. Lord in your mercy For the grace to will one thing: that we might find freedom from the busyness of life and learn to desire God above all things. Lord in your mercy. For a lens of faith: that our faith might inform and guide us in everything we do so that our faith might be lived out at all times and in all places. Lord in your mercy For all who exercise authority and lead others: that they may use their authority as Jesus did, to free, to heal, and to build up community. Lord in your mercy For wisdom: that we might have insight and discernment to resist the temptations of the devil and choose paths that are good, faithful, and true. Lord in your mercy For all who are ill: Especially Howard, Ann, Becky, and Harry, Laura, Pete, and Suella, Peg, Erle, Connie, and Carmena, Georgia and Tiffany, Hans, Bob, Michael and Molly, and Verna; that they may be surrounded by caregivers and loved ones and that healing and wholeness might be restored each and every day. Lord in your mercy For those who have died and rest in Christ s mercy: Especially Nancy, Richard, and Shirley, Lawson, and Suzanne, Harold, Don, John, and Galen; that they might have life in the care of their God and that those who grieve might find hope and confidence in the promises of God. Lord in your mercy For Peace: that God will urge leaders towards a deeper and more respectful dialogue with one another so that lasting peace and agreement can be reached. Lord in your mercy For the saints of the church: Especially we remember today St Thomas Aquinas; priest and doctor of the Church. May his faith and his wisdom serve to teach and inspire us as we seek to know and understand our faith and our God. Lord in your mercy 4

Wednesday, January 31 Please note that we will NOT gather to sing Vespers, as the nave will be undergoing some extensive ceiling repairs. Ash Wednesday ~ Solemn Confession & The Imposition of Ashes Wednesday, February 14 ~ 7:30 am / 4:30 pm / 7:00 pm As the Church begins her annual Lenten Fast, we gather for Solemn Confession & the Imposition of Ashes. Parishioners and friends are invited to gather at 7:30 am (as the day begins), at 4:30 pm (at the conclusion of Faith & Fun Club), or in the evening, at 7:00 pm. All gatherings will be held in the Nave. This is a most-solemn rite which invites devout, soul-searching, contemplation. Lent is a time of reflection and repentance in which we hear the call to conform our lives, more fully, to the call of the Gospel, and to be a people who seek to know and follow the Lord s way of life, marked by compassion and love, more faithfully. We are encouraged to pray with more intentionality to fast especially from the excess which we so often practice and to consider (and respond to) the needs of the poor, with greater patience, consistency and generosity. Through these Lenten Disciplines, we prepare to celebrate the Great Easter Joys which will soon, after 40 days, be ours! Please see Pr Short or Pr Weinhold with any questions. 7

8 Lenten Luncheons Wednesdays at 12:00 pm (Noon) ~ Beginning February 21 Our Ecumenical Community, hosted by the Bedford Presbyterian Church, will gather each Wednesday in Lent for devotions, fellowship and a lite meal. Stations of the Cross Lenten Devotions on the Passion & Crucifixion of our Lord Wednesday Evenings, 7:00 pm ~ Beginning February 21 At Trinity, on Wednesday evenings, we ll gather at 7:00 pm each Wednesday, beginning February 21, to pray the traditional and historic Stations of the Cross, a liturgy of readings and prayers which invite us to meditate on the passion and crucifixion of our Lord. Please join us, and make Stations a part of your Lenten devotions. Children & Youth Ministries Sunday School ~ Please Join Us!
