For Julianne Donlon-Stanz her faith journey took her from a little mountainous village in Ireland to Northeastern Wisconsin. Her role as Director of Adult Faith Formation for the Diocese allows her to share our Catholic faith with people of all ages through the programs and seminars offered through the diocesan Department of Education. It is clear that Julianne's love of the Church and for the people of the Diocese of Green Bay infuses her work with passion. This work is tremendously important to me because it s impacted my own life on such a personal level. I ve seen the effects when people are energized in their faith, they live their faith and are really on fire for Christ and His teachings, said Julianne. Her work has impacted more than 6,000 people and without the support of the Bishop s Appeal Julianne would not be able to bringing Christ s message to them. Julianne's classes are always offered to adults throughout the Diocese at no cost because of your generosity to the Bishop's Appeal. To make a gift today contact you parish or visit the Bishop s Appeal website at or call Debbie toll-free at ext

5 M ARCH 1 1, P A G E 5 THE SOCIETY FOR FAITH AND CHILDREN S EDUCATION (SFACE) is appreciative of the invitation and opportunity to share our mission work with the parish community of Nativity of our Lord. Fr. Savio Samala, who spent 2 weeks with you in August last summer, is a co-founder of this mission organization. Our primary focus is to provide post secondary education for youth in developing countries. The Sponsorship program connects a young person in the program with a sponsor for three years. S FACE pays $ per year for 3 years, or a total of $1, This pays for their tuition. The young people are asked to write a letter to the sponsor twice a year and pray daily for their benefactor. We will provide a short Bio with family information and course of study, and photo for you to consider on the weekend of March 17/18 after all Masses. Members of S FACE organization will be available to answer questions. You may also check our website: for further information. FAST AND ABSTINENCE Catholics are to keep the Lenten fast and abstinence according to the following directives: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. On these days of complete abstinence, meat or soup or gravy made from meat are not to be eaten. Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, are bound to fast on Good Friday. Fasting means eating only one full meal per day. Smaller amounts of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be eaten between meals. The obligation to fast ceases with the celebration of one s 59th birthday. In the spirit of Lent, the faithful will not lightly excuse themselves from these obligations. READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF MAR 11TH Sunday Ex 20:1-17 or 20:1-3, 7-8, 12-17/ 1 Cor 1:22-25/Jn 2:13-25 or, for Year A, Ex 17:3-7/ Rom 5:1-2, 5-8/Jn 4:5-42 or 4:5-15, 19b-26, 39a, Monday 2 Kgs 5:1-15b/Lk 4:24-30 Tuesday Dn 3:25, 34-43/Mt 18:21-35 Wednesday Dt 4:1, 5-9/Mt 5:17-19 Thursday Jer 7:23-28/Lk 11:14-23 Friday Hos 14:2-10/Mk 12:28-34 Saturday Hos 6:1-6/Lk 18:9-14 Sunday 2 Chr 36:14-16, 19-23/Eph 2:4-10/Jn 3:14-21 or, for Year A, 1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a/Eph 5:8-14/Jn 9:1-41 or 9:1, 6-9, 13-17, OUR LENTEN JOURNEY Lent is a time to look within our hearts to find why we chose and continue to be a follower of Jesus. During Lent you will notice the water remaining in our Baptismal Font and in the holy water bowls at the entrances. It will serve as a reminder of our call to live our baptismal commitments. We invite you to bless yourself with the sign of the cross as you enter/leave each liturgy. With this Water of Life, all other seasonal decorations remain subtle. However, our simple Cross [the Tree of Life; more than symbol of death, but rather a place and the experience in which death is transformed into life ( beta crux, the blessed cross)] is accented with purple cloth which leads the eye to the Font. And our bare church environment conveys a sense of being emptied out and being sustained by God alone. This journey to Easter is not just for us Catholics who have received the sacraments of initiation but also for those who want to join us: the Catechumens (the un-baptized who will be fully initiated into our faith at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation & Holy Communion) and Candidates (baptized non-catholics who want to be fully initiated into our faith through the sacraments of Confirmation & Holy Communion). It is our hope that during these 40 days each of us will be renewed in faith through the dying and rising of our Lord (the Paschal Mystery). Though the most appropriate time for baptism is the Easter Vigil and the Easter Season until Pentecost, baptism is also celebrated on Sundays of the year. Because the days of Holy Week, from Monday to Thursday inclusive, have precedence over all other celebrations, it is not fitting that baptisms or confirmations be celebrated on these days since they have their natural place in the Easter Vigil. LENTEN FASTING By itself, fasting is probably not very useful spiritually. But along with prayer, fasting can help us to recognize our deep need for God. Physical hunger can help awaken our spiritual hunger. Fasting can help us realize how attached we are to superficial comfort and pleasure, challenging us to rethink our priorities. Fasting can be an act of solidarity with those who regularly experience hunger, giving us a brief glimpse of their daily struggle. During your fasting this Lent, you might want to learn more about hunger and its causes. Here are just a few of the many web sites you could visit to learn more about or to get involved in solving the problem of hunger: America s Second Harvest Bread for the World Heifer International The Hunger Project Operation Rice Bowl Poverty.com 5
