The Lion of the Tribe of Juda, the Root of David has conquered, Alleluia! November 9 is the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. What is the significance of this feast? Every diocese has a mother church, the bishop's cathedral where the diocesan church gathers and celebrates. The cathedral is the seat of the bishop's authority over the diocese. That authority is intended to be one of service to God's people, shepherding and guiding them in a truly pastoral mode. all bishops, that they continue to be true shepherds of God's people Liturgical Publications Inc The pope is first and foremost the bishop of Rome, as well as the head of the Roman Catholic Church. St. John Lateran is his cathedral, and its prominence derives from that reality. St. John Lateran cathedral traces its origins to Constantine who converted a portion of the Laterani family palace into a church, and gave it to Pope Sylvester ( ) as the papal church and residence. It became known as the cathedral of the pope, and its facade's inscription refers to it as "the Mother and Head of all Churches, in the City and of the World." The universal celebration of this feast stresses the unity among Roman Catholics, as they unite themselves with the chair of Peter. The Lateran portion of the name refers to the family who donated the land. St. John refers to the two saints in whose honor the church is dedicated, John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. Truly there are people who attend that Mass because of the Children s Liturgy! It is with joy that I tell you we have a new catechist who has heard God s call and come forward to start offering the Children s Liturgy during the 10:00 Mass! Mary Kay Romenelli will be inviting the children, ages 4-9, to come forward during the liturgy of the word, and follow her to the lower church for a children s program. They will return back upstairs before the end of the prayers of petition. This new program during the 10:00 Mass will begin on November 16 th. 3 KofC Food Bank Weekend-Please help those in need, Nov. 15th & 16th, by bringing non-perishable food items to benefit the Bidwell Food Bank and cash donations to support the Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Bank. The Knights of Columbus will be at all of the doors before and after each Mass collecting for this worthy cause. A Big THANK YOU to everyone who helped clean the church last time. The next date to clean is Dec 9am. Please meet in the church. This is a great way to earn service hours. St. Vincent DePaul s Baskets The preparation for the St. Anthony s SVdP Thanksgiving and Christmas food basket is just around the corner. If you would like to donate money towards the purchase of a Turkey or other items that are needed for the food basket, please place your funds in an envelope marked SVdP Food Basket and place in the Poor Box located at the back of the church. This will help us assist many families in need this year. November 9, 2014 Fascinating Facts of our Faith There are NINE ways of being an accessory to another s sin; by concealment, consent, counsel, command, by defense, provocation, praise, partaking and by silence. H-m-m, that covers everything. THE EIGHT BEATITUDES-are the standards or rules for Christ s followers. That s us. Beatitude means perfect happiness. And they are exact opposite of the world s standards. We do know, however, Perfect Happiness can only be when the soul reaches heaven. So this, would be in the earthly state, but by living the Beatitudes, we are on the path to heaven. THE SEVENLY SACRAMENTS-each of which is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace. Five Sacraments are designed for the life of the individual and Two, Holy Orders and Matrimony are designed for the life of the church. Each sacrament gives a special grace called Sacramental face, which helps to carry out the particular purpose of the Sacrament. Two, Baptism and Penance, are called Sacraments of the dead because their chief purpose is to give supernatural life and sanctifying grace to souls spiritually dead through sin. SEVEN DEALY SINS so called because they are the sources from which all sins arise. They are Pride, Covetousness, Lust, Anger, Gluttony, Envy and Sloth. SEVERN GIFTS OF THE HOLY GHOST-Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel,-these four enlighten the understanding-fortitude, Piety, and Fear of the Lordthese three strengthen the will.
