ANTHONY S NEWS & EVENTS Mass Intentions by Fr. William Saunders What does it mean to have a Mass "offered" for someone? An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: for example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday), or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one s soul. Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical "Mirae caritatis" (1902) beautifully elaborated this point and emphasized the connection between the communion of saints with the Mass: "The grace of mutual love among the living, strengthened and increased by the sacrament of the Eucharist, flows, especially by virtue of the Sacrifice [of the Mass], to all who belong to the communion of saints." Please keep in mind that the tradition of offering Masses for others, particularly the dead, originates in the very early Church. Given this understanding, we can add some specifics. When a priest offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions: First, to offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the Church. Second, to offer the Mass in union with the whole Church and for the good of the whole Church. Third, to offer the Mass for a particular intention, such as the repose of the soul of someone who has died. The special personal fruits of the Mass benefit the celebrating priest who acts in the person of Christ in offering the Mass and to the people who are in attendance and participate in the offering of the Mass. These fruits are both extensively and intensively finite, since each of us is finite. Therefore, the more a Mass is offered, the more benefit is conferred. Finally, a person may ask a priest to offer a Mass for a particular intention; usually, a stipend is given to the priest for offering the Mass, which thereby in justice creates an obligation which must be satisfied. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION All Saints Party What a wonderful celebration we had last Sunday, at the All Saints party! Thank you so much to everyone who helped make it a success. Special thanks goes to Michele Kofoed, Brenda Caligiuri, Lisa Darnell, Candace Johnson, Jimmy Garcia and.(i may give you another name tomorrow) Without your commitment to our children, we wouldn t have such a unified community in RE and in the church. So thank you all! Children s Liturgy of the Word If you attend the 11:30 Mass, you know what a fantastic program we have with the Children s Liturgy, offered by Sanita Simms. Truly there are people who attend that Mass because of the Children s Liturgy! It is with joy that I tell you we have a new catechist who has heard God s call and come forward to start offering the Children s Liturgy during the 10:00 Mass! Mary Kay Romenelli will be inviting the children, ages 4-9, to come forward during the liturgy of the word, and follow her to the lower church for a children s program. They will return back upstairs before the end of the prayers of petition. This new program during the 10:00 Mass will begin on November 16 th. Please call or me if you have any questions or comments about Faith Formation here at St. Anthony. Thank you for continuing to allow me to teach your kids about our God and our faith. God s blessing to your family! Melissa Hill Director of Religious Education

Also known as the Decalogue, that were given to Moses as the basis for making criminal and liturgical law for the Israelites. They are accepted by the Christians along with Christ s example and teaching as a basis for our morality. We all know the Ten Commandments. Right?? They are actually combined in the Two Great Commandments which are: (1) Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart and with their whole soul and with thy whole mind and with thy whole strength, (2) Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. That s a pretty tall order isn t it! Within these two commands, yes commands not suggestions, are the Seven Corporal and Seven Spiritual works of Mercy. You remember them: Feed the hungry, Give drink to the thirsty, Clothe the naked, Visit the imprisoned, Shelter the homeless, Visit the sick, Bury the dead Admonish the sinner, Instruct the ignorant, Counsel the doubtful, Comfort the Sorrowful, Bear wrongs patiently, Forgive all injuries, Pray for the living and the dead. Sound like a full time job? It is!! Being a good Catholic is that and more. But it is the surest way to get from point A (earth), to point B (heaven). In next week s bulletin: Our journey continues with Numbers 9, 8, and 7.
