Today, in our more casual society while we may not dress formally for Mass, we should dress properly out of respect for God and the sensitivities of others attending Mass as well. With Memorial Day weekend coming up, we would like to remind you that what may be appropriate for the beach or for outdoor activities is not necessarily appropriate for Mass. 3 PASTOR S COLUMN SAD NEWS & GOOD NEWS I have some news to share with you, some sad and some good. Saturday, May 18, Don Cottrell, a longtime member of our parish s music ministry, was called home to the Lord. Don was a member of our choir for 55 years and also leader of song at our Sunday Masses and other services for many, many years. He officially retired from his role as leader of song in October, 2010, at the age of 85. However, Don continued to sing at our novena services on Monday evenings for some time after that. Father Reilly, former pastor of our parish, beautifully summed up Don s service to the Church, his work and family life, and his love for his wife, Emily, during his funeral homily this past Tuesday. Don Cotttrell and Bill Ryan, our former music director who died in January of this year, were the foundation of the liturgical music program here at our parish. For well over forty years both Don and Bill helped the people of Saint Joseph Parish to sing out their praise and worship of God. Our current music program is built on the foundation they so beautifully set by their musical talent and by their lives as Catholic gentlemen. I now have some good news, which both Don and Bill would have appreciated. This Tuesday, May 21, at 7:30 pm in Mary s Chapel in the lower church, we are having a special evening of reflection for those who serve in any liturgical role in our parish. That includes choir members, leaders of song, musicians, readers/lectors, altar servers, ushers/greeters, and ministers of Holy Communion. This evening will include a presentation entitled, Spirit Filled Ministry. It will be given by Father Thomas Dente, the Director of the Office of Divine Worship of the Archdiocese of Newark. Father Dente is a sought after speaker and teacher so we are fortunate that he will be able to join us. His talk comes at a perfect time. It comes right after Pentecost Sunday, the feast that celebrates the continuing presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives as Christians. I encourage everyone involved in a liturgical ministry in our parish to make every effort to be with us this Tuesday evening. We all need to make time to let the Holy Spirit renew our enthusiasm for our ministry at the Altar of the Lord. Love, Father Tom Iwanowski PENTECOST SUNDAY, MAY 19, MAY CROWNING OF OUR LADY OF THE GRAPES On Monday, May 13, the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, the students of Saint Joseph School gathered in the upper church to celebrate two devotions traditional to the month of May: the crowning of Mary s statue and the praying of her rosary. As you can see from the photo above, the statue that was crowned is the one that stands on the left side of our church directly behind the choir. You have probably noticed that the figure is not attired in the traditional blue and white seen on most statues of Mary. Instead, this statue is clothed in earthen tones, her head already adorned with a floral wreath as part of the sculpture. This is not how we are used to seeing the Blessed Mother, and yet it is indeed her, and the infant in her arms clutching a bunch of grapes is, in fact, Jesus. This representation of Mary is known as Our Lady of the Grapes and is seen in classical paintings by artists such as Fra Angelico and Masaccio as early as 1425 and in the work of Lucas Cranach the Elder in the 1500s (shown above and opposite ). The grapes the infant Jesus holds are considered to be a symbol of the blood (like the red wine of Communion) that he is prepared to shed for us. In central Europe, the feast of the Assumption of Mary into heaven (August 15) falls when it is almost time for the wine harvest, so the day has also been known as the feast of Our Lady of the Grapes and Grain. In France, September 8 (the day the Church celebrates the birth of Mary) is known by winegrowers as the feast of Our Lady of the Grape Harvest. And in Brazil, an annual grape festival takes place in honor of Nossa Senhora das Uvas (Our Lady of the Grapes). The painting opposite by Pierre Mignard called The Virgin of the Grapes ( ) is the best known of the many paintings of Mary and the infant Jesus depicted with grapes. It currently hangs in the Louvre in Paris, France. by Diane Hellriegel

PENTECOST SUNDAY, MAY 19, 2013 AN EVENING OF REFLECTION FOR ALL LITURGICAL MINISTERS This Tuesday, May 21, 7:30 pm, Lower Church Fr. Tom Dente, the Director of the Office of Divine Worship for the Archdiocese of Newark, will give a special talk entitled Spirit-Filled Ministry for all liturgical ministers of Saint Joseph Church (readers, servers, ministers of Communion, greeters, and members of the music ministry) this Tuesday, May 21 at 7:30 pm in Mary s Chapel the lower church. This promises to be a great motivational and inspirational event, don t miss it! LIKE TO PLAY SOFTBALL? THEN JOIN OUR PARISH SOFTBALL TEAM Saint Joseph Parish is once more taking part in an Inter-Church Co-ed softball league. This is slow-pitch softball in a social and minimally competitive league that begins in June and ends in late July, with single elimination playoffs in early August. Games are normally played on Sunday afternoons. Saint Joseph Softball Team is looking for interested parishioners (of all ages 14 years or older) to join the roster. Our newest Eagles are (L-R) Harry Aquino, William Duby, Sean Reilly, Victor Mallet, and Michael McPherson. 15 other Eagle Scouts from their Troop #142 joined them for this important advancement ceremony. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint John 20: After Jesus rose from the dead, he visited his friends and said to them, Peace be with you. Then he showed them his hands and his side and said to them again, Peace be with you. As my Father has sent me, so I send you. Then he breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven and whose sins you do not forgive, they are not forgiven. Since Jesus could not remain with his friends, he sent the Holy Spirit to be with them always. The Holy Spirit would give the followers of Jesus the wisdom to remember what Jesus had taught them. The Holy Spirit would help them to be strong believers in God and in Jesus. The Holy Spirit would also help them to bring God s forgiveness and peace to others just as Jesus did. Like those first followers of Jesus, we too have received the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit came to us when we were baptized. Each time we make the sign of the cross we are reminded of our baptism as we say the words, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. That sign of the cross also reminds us of the Holy Spirit who is always with us. Have you ever been tempted to do something wrong, for example, to disobey your parents? But there is a voice in your head saying not to disobey, but rather to do what your parents want you to do? That voice is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit of God always leads us to do good and to follows the example of Jesus. Learn to listen to Holy Spirit. It is like having Jesus with you always, telling you what to do. Say this prayer: Holy Spirit of God please help me to always know the right thing to do. Help me to always live as a child of God and a true follower of Jesus. 6
