THIRTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 17, 2010 I lift up my eyes toward the mountains; whence shall help come to me? My help is from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR The leaves are orange and gold and dropping quickly. The winds blow chillier each day. Pumpkins and gourds and cornstalks decorate our homes. So naturally, my mind turns towards thoughts of Hawaii. Ah, Hawaii...endless beaches, azure sea, mountains, waterfalls, forests, hukilaus and chickens. I have visited Hawaii twice. The first time I stayed on the big island of Hawaii. During that stay, I visited a friend's tiny vacation home really more of a one-room, Gilligan's Island style hut but paradise nonetheless which sat on the edge of a crystal clear lagoon. I could open the door that lead to the small deck and dive right into the lagoon and swim with the giant sea turtles. My second visit was to the island of Kauai. It is a bit less commercially developed than some of the other islands, and I loved it there. One of my most distinct impressions was that Kauai was home to hippies and wild chickens. Wild chickens were all over the place, and so were the hippies. Supposedly, there are so many wild chickens because some chickens got loose many years ago and, with no natural predators, kept on multiplying. It probably was the same with the hippies. There will be no feral chickens, no sea turtles, no clear blue lagoons, and hopefully no hippies, but I can still guarantee you a fantastic Hawaiian adventure at this year's Langan Luau on Saturday, November 6th, at 7pm. This is our annual Fall Raffle Party, and it is the main fundraiser for our school. Please purchase a raffle ticket...or two...or three! The more tickets you buy, the better your chance of winning one of the fabulous cash prizes. You could win as much as $10,000! Think of all the trips to Hawaii you could make with 10 grand! One raffle ticket admits two to the Luau where you and your date will enjoy the silent auction, food, drinks, music, dancing, and fun with your Divine Infant friends who will also be indulging in our collective tropical fantasy. But most of all, you will be supporting our school. A Hawaiian vacation is expensive, and so is quality Catholic education in our parish. But a Hawaiian vacation lasts for a week or two. The education of our children lasts a life time. By supporting our Fall Raffle, you are helping to provide the life-long gift of Catholic education and formation for the future generations of Divine Infant. On Kauai, the chickens have thrived. By supporting our school in the Fall Raffle, our children will thrive too. They will learn all they need to become successful, well-rounded, committed Catholics. Please purchase raffle tickets. Please come to the Langan Luau. For just one evening, we will forget about those turning leaves and chilly winds and watch our school and our children grow in the warm Hawaiian sun, just like the chickens, just like the hippies! Fr. Michael FOR THOSE WHO PERSEVERE There is a slight but real shift in scriptural focus for the last few weeks of the liturgical year. For many weeks we have been hearing what it means to be a faithful disciple. Now we will focus on the reward that awaits those who persevere on the long journey of faith. This Sunday we hear that impartial justice will be done in the courts of our eternal judge. First, Sirach teaches us that the God of justice... hears the cry of the oppressed and the one who serves God willingly (Sirach 35:12, 13, 16). Then we hear Paul echo what the psalmist proclaims, When the just cry out, the Lord hears them... and those who are crushed in spirit he saves (Psalm 34:18, 19). Finally, the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector who went to the temple to pray affirms that God will exalt all who cry out for mercy. ALL SAINTS DAY The Solemnity of All Saints is Monday the First of November. Because it is a Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is dispensed. There will be only one Mass for All Saints Day, Monday, November 1st, at 8:00 am.

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP Archbishop Quigley Center 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL Fax: October 24, 2010 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The annual celebration of World Mission Sunday is a reminder to us of the universality of the Church and the scope of her mission. The bishops gathered at the Second Vatican Council stressed the importance of mission for fulfilling God's plan for the salvation of all humanity. God intends that all people live in communion with him; if this is to happen, we must listen to God s call to become missionary disciples. All of our parishes are to be homes and schools where we are formed through prayer, the celebration of the liturgy, and works of charity and ongoing outreach through which we make Christ known. These dimensions of Catholic life make us grow in love with the One who is love, Christ the Lord. Mission is born out of a loving relationship with Christ. As we grow in this relationship, our union with him creates a deep missionary spirit, and our witness to others becomes more forceful. When we live in communion with the Lord, we offer the world an invitation to experience the mystery of life in Christ. Only in union with Christ can our hearts be transformed by love for all peoples loved by Christ himself. Then zeal for the spread of the Gospel grows in our hearts and we become authentic missionary disciples. We can never be content with simply maintaining the life of our parishes. We must always be ready to reach beyond ourselves and our needs and be concerned with spreading the Good News of God's love for people of every nation and culture. This is what it means to be Catholic. As we celebrate World Mission Sunday, I invite you to join me in renewing our commitment to mission as parishes, families and individuals, and in uniting these efforts with those of this archdiocese and of the whole Church. I ask you to pray for the work of the Pontifical Mission Societies and missionaries throughout the world, to give them your support and take seriously your own baptismal call to mission. Let us ask the Lord to open the hearts of people everywhere to receive the gift of faith in the Lord Jesus and make all the Church's missionary work fruitful. Thank you. May God bless you and those you love. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

Mrs. Day's 3rd grade class worked on "Pumpkin Science" one afternoon. The purpose of this experiment was to introduce "Scientific Method" which includes observation, problem, hypothesis, procedure, data, and conclusion. The class had a lot of fun predicting if the pumpkin would float than actually testing their hypothesis. The experiment also involved weighing, measuring height, width, and circumference of the pumpkin to see if their estimates were correct. The students said they had the most fun taking the seeds out of the pumpkin and enjoying eating them the next day. The Divine Infant Band sent four of its Bandmembers to perform in the Vandercook College of Music Honorfest on Saturday, September 25th. Vandercook is the only college in the country strictly dedicated to Music Education degrees. 350 students participated at the Honorfest from schools all over the state in Band or Choir. They were given music when they arrived and worked throughout the day with college clinicians to prepare a concert at the end of the day. It was a great learning experience and powerful builder for our own Band. The four Band members who participated are: Anthony Frugoli, Tim Shuflit, Peter Shuflit and Omar Paniagua. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU! On Monday, October 25th, Grades 3, 4, and 5 will be going to see the West Suburban Symphony at Christ Church in Oak Brook. They will be performing Prokifiev's "Peter and the Wolf". A docent from the Symphony, Rich Luke, came to the school on Thursday October 14th to talk about the upcoming concert. He demonstrated his musical talent when he played his cello for the group. First Grade students are setting the scene for a wonderful Halloween. In their Art class last week, students made Jack-o-lanterns out of recycled soda bottles, paint and black construction paper. Pictured are Rachal Shuflit, Mary Lah, Abhi Patel, and Mateo Gutierrez showing off their pumpkin project.

All are Invited to the Divine Infant Family Halloween Carnival Games Food Prizes Cakewalk Friday, October 29th 7pm - 10pm If you are interested in volunteering or have questions, please contact Cathy Thank you for supporting the eighth grade!

FRESH IDEAS WANTED The Divine Infant Men s Club is looking to expand the number of its board members. Many of us have been involved on the board for over a decade and, while still very much committed to the organization, we welcome new volunteers to our club. The Men s Club has operated as a social organization for over 50 years. The generosity of those attending our functions has blessed us with the ability to raise funds in support of many parish and community efforts. We could list hundreds of donations over the years but some of our more recent activities have raised funds to purchase blinds for Langan Hall, new ciboria for the church, and gym and band equipment for our school children. We also sponsor our local Cub and Boy Scouts as well as boys baseball and girls softball and joined with our local Lions Club to underwrite a parish outing to a local sporting event. We are eager to find more ways to support our Divine Infant family and neighbors especially with new activities and events. If we can raise a few dollars in the process, so much the better. None of this is possible without new members willing to share their creativity, ingenuity, and talent with our organization. If you re concerned that becoming an active board member will not fit into your busy lives, we welcome all of our parishioners to share their ideas with us. Just write us with the types of activities you would like to see at Divine Infant and drop them off at the rectory. You may also feel free to contact Patrick Casey at or by at pcasey@pbrand.com with your ideas or for more information on our club. Thank you. D.I. YOUTH ENSEMBLE NEEDS YOU!!!! If you have any questions, please contact Sue Cerny at BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE The days are shorter and colder. Leaves swirl in the crisp autumn wind as nature slowly, beautifully declines, fades and prepares to rest in the death of winter. The chill of November has inspired many people and cultures to devote this time of the year to the remembrance of those who have gone before us in death, and the Church does likewise. The autumn triduum of Halloween, All Saints and All Souls invites us to see Death, to face our own mortality and to remember the dead. The Book of Remembrance will be in the vestibule of church the last two weekends of October. Inscribed in this Book are the names of all who have been buried from our parish this past year. We invite you to write the names of other deceased loved ones in this Book. The Book of Remembrance will be carried in procession to the sanctuary on November 7th during the 11:30 am Mass where it will remain until the new liturgical year begins on the First Sunday of Advent, November 28th. Please feel free to continue to inscribe the names of the dead in the Book throughout the month of November. Then every time you enter Church, take a moment to notice our Book of Remembrance and to pray for our beloved dead.
