2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR In an I received this past week, someone made reference to the TV show Glee. I did not get it. I know nothing about the show, so the reference escaped me. But that sort of thing often happens to me. I do not pay very close attention to the latest fads or trends. I tend to miss the in thing. As Grandpa Simpson once commented, I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I m with isn t it, and what is it seems weird and scary. Of course, this personal deficiency of mine is not limited only to things in our popular culture. I also miss things in my professional life. For example, I heard that almost a year ago our Holy Father Benedict XVI had declared this to be the Year for Priests. Given that I am a priest, one might expect me to pay attention to that sort of thing. Nope. I paid no attention, made no mention, and otherwise ignored it because it sounded to me, quite honestly, like a fad. Now, please feel free to disagree with me, but I thought the Year for Priests was a silly thing because I do not think of priesthood in terms of years. I think of it in terms of days. Every day, I get up and try to do priesthood. I do not always do it well, but I do it every day. Eventually, of course, those days accumulate into years, but it is always just the day that makes the difference. The month of May is when the vast majority of priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago mark the anniversary of their ordination. I have never paid much attention to my priesthood anniversary. To me, it is just another of the days that I live priesthood. But I would like to step out of character for a moment and draw attention to two anniversaries. First, this month marks 40 years of priesthood for Fr. Tom, and if I factored in the leap years correctly, that comes to 14,610 days of priesthood (someone might want to check my math). That is 14,610 days of Fr. Tom doing what he does so well: preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ, serving God s people, celebrating the mysteries of our faith, and doing it all in simplicity and humility one day at a time. Thank you, Fr. Tom, for your priesthood and for doing priesthood not as a fad or a trend but as a daily gift to all of us, no matter what year it might be. Second, this year marks the 49th anniversary of Fr. Joyce s ordination. My little calculator tells me that is 17,897 days of priesthood. Wow. That means two very important things: Fr. Joyce has been a priest longer than I have been alive and next year is his 50th anniversary! Thank you, Fr. Joyce, for your priesthood and for the many ways you have served God s people for nigh on half a century! You are an example to us all of what it means to be a disciple of Christ day in and day out. Congratulations to Fr. Tom and to Fr. Joyce. Thank you for every day of your priesthood. May God bless you and give you many more happy, healthy days. Now, let me find out when Glee is on Fr. Michael ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Thank you to the generous people of Divine Infant for their continued support. We once again ask for your assistance. We are receiving additional requests for food and monetary assistance. As a result of the increased demand, our food pantry is running low. Therefore, we ask that you bring nonperishable food (fruits, vegetables, soup, etc.) when you come to church. All food items can be deposited in the baskets in the vestibule of church. If you choose to give a monetary donation, there are blue envelopes in your envelope packet for St. Vincent de Paul. Without your continued support, we would not be able to do God s work in helping those in need. Thank you and God bless you and your loved ones. A LETTER OF THANKS!!! On behalf of Parents Television Council, I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation for the help and cooperation of both Fr. Michael and the parishioners who signed with us at the recent weekend Masses. With the help of a fellow volunteer, Mr. Bob Sherman of Glenview, we had close to 50 people sign up. They will receive information on how they can participate in this ongoing effort to improve the quality of television. We are extremely encouraged by your concern, interest and willingness to help in this important cause. Thank you again! Don Eck, Parishioner

3 SCHOOL NEWS The primary classes eagerly watched as their six caterpillars made their change into butterflies. They checked on them daily and when the caterpillars went into their cocoons they counted the days it took them to change into butterflies. Fr. Michael came and blessed the butterflies and they were sent on their way on a beautiful sunny day. After a study of volcanoes in science, the fifth grade students made models of volcanoes. Some erupted them using the chemical reaction of baking soda and vinegar. Others chose to erupt theirs using a combination of Diet Coke and Mentos. Carbon dioxide gas in the Coke gathers and accumulates on the Mentos. The gas expands rapidly, pushing the Coke out of the bottle, through the tube, causing a huge eruption. This simulates the heat and pressure that causes a real volcano to erupt. Pictured is Grace Patton dropping the Mentos into her volcano as her classmates watch for the coming eruption. As a Mother s Day project the fifth grade class beautifully painted and decorated flower pots. They then planted a flower in the top. Showing their flower pots are Alexa Epps, Erin Lorenzen and Grace Genova before presenting them to their moms on Mother s Day.

4 Mr. Charles Steker passed away in April of The Steker Family wanted to do something for the Divine Infant Jesus children in his memory. Mr. Steker was a Divine Infant graduate. His children also graduated from Divine Infant. He was very active in the school for many years. Two memorial scholarships are awarded each year in his memory to two seventh grade students. The scholarship is credited toward their tuition here at Divine Infant for the following school year. The scholarships are based on academic effort, participation in extracurricular activities and, most importantly, for fostering Christian values by example. The recipients for this year s scholarships are Louis Herman and Christopher Kulnig. Divine Infant Spring Flower Sale Saturday, May 15th and Sunday, May 16th An assortment of annuals, perennials and baskets will be available after all Masses in the Gloria parking lot. 5 FAREWELL BLESSING In the Hebrew scriptures the farewell blessing is a fairly common way to end the story of the lives of the great figures in Israel s faith. The farewell blessings of Jacob, Moses, and David are particularly notable. At the end of Luke s Gospel, we have a farewell blessing by Jesus; it is the only time that Jesus is described as giving a blessing to his disciples. Jesus farewell, of course, is different. Unlike Jacob, Moses, and David, who gave this blessing at the time of their deaths, Jesus bestows his blessing as he prepares to enter into new and glorious life seated at the right hand of God in heaven. His blessing, like that of his predecessors, is meant to give them strength and courage. But it also has another purpose: it prepares them to be sent out on mission. In this way, it is a precursor to the dismissal blessing we receive at the end of every Mass. Yes, the grace of God s blessing strengthens us, but it is also a dynamic force that sends us out on a mission to continue the life and the work of the Risen Christ. 8 GRIEF AND LOSS GROUP FOR OLDER ADULTS (50 and over) Pillars and Aging Care Connections are offering a group for individuals 50 years old and older who have lost a close relative or friend. The group will be held at Aging Care Connections on a weekday morning (1.5 hours) and will last 10 weeks. Exact dates and time to be determined. The cost is $5.00 per session. Registration is required. Often, the grieving process can result in isolation and a sense of hopelessness. After a loss, most people have questions and experience feelings that they have never encountered before. Group members will learn about the grieving process while exploring myths about grief and typical grief reactions. This group will provide a safe haven where members can share their stories and express their emotions and feelings. 10 CHRIST IS THE TRUE HIGH PRIEST Fr. Douglass Martis, The Liturgical Institute, University of St. Mary of the Lake Every culture has its proper way of communicating and expressing what it believes. Every culture has its own way of speaking, and so it is with Christians. The same is true for Catholics. We use the symbols of our Christian culture to express what we believe in a way that is unique to us. We have our own musical heritage, our own linguistic expressions, our own gestures that are charged with theological and holy meaning. To best appreciate Catholic culture we have to live in it, abide in it to make the meaning our own. The windows always teach me something. Seated in the priest-celebrant s chair in Saints Peter and Paul Church, Naperville, the window of the Sacred Heart speaks, teaches, inspires me. Some of the most beautiful stained-glass windows in the Diocese of Joliet can be discovered here. A previous generation has left behind these images as a tribute to their own strong faith and to remind us of what we believe. We believe that the Mass is the prayer of Christ to his Father. There is no more perfect prayer than this. What s more, not only do we witness this prayer, not only do we ourselves benefit from it, we get to participate in it to find ourselves, our true selves, there. The window of the Sacred Heart is given as a medallion above the window of the Lord s Ascension! It also weaves together powerful and essential aspects of the Lord s mission: at once he holds the Eucharist, he bears the weighty wood of the cross, he wears the crown of his victory over sin and death. Here we have the Suffering Servant, Christ the King, and the Eternal High Priest wrapped around the Sacred Heart. It is an icon that will not let us forget what Christ has done for us; what he continues to do to show his love to the Father, for love of us. Christ is the true and eternal priest. Another window, this one in the apse of the sanctuary depicts a priest celebrating Mass. It is a unique image in that it lets us see what the priest is thinking as he offers the sacrifice. He reflects on Christ the Good Shepherd, who lays down his life for the sheep, who is known by the sound of his voice, who seeks out the stray and the lost. The window is a poignant reminder to every priest that the sacrifice he offers is Christ s own. The priest stands there in obedience to the Lord s will. He stands there in the place of Christ the head, in persona Christi capitis, as our Catholic theology tells us. Every thought must be for Christ since it is not we who offer the sacrifice for him, but he who does it in us. As he enters deeper into the sanctuary, deeper into the mystery, the priest is reminded to model himself on Christ. When it comes to the Sacred Liturgy, one of the most important things we must keep in mind is that since the Mass is the prayer of Christ himself to his Father, our participation in the liturgy allows us to join him. As a result, our prayer takes on the power of his words. He accomplishes for us what we are not able to do ourselves. This does not diminish us; it raises us up in Christ. Christ is the true high priest. He is the perfect priest because his offering is the total gift of himself, with no strings attached as the late Bishop Roger Kaffer used to say. The Preface for the Mass of the Holy Eucharist, used especially on Holy Thursday as the Church enters the most sacred of events, tells us that Christ is the true and eternal priest who offered himself as a victim for our deliverance. To be priest is one of the most dangerous responsibilities. In the history of religions, the priest is the strong, manly figure who with heroic courage, does everything that is necessary for the sake of the people. Faith requires commitment, fidelity, hard choices. The priest dares to mediate between the human and divine, and so is constantly at risk of falling into the abyss. A leader of the early liturgical movement once noted that renewal of the liturgy should lead us to a strong, virile catholicity. This is the image and example of Christ, who holds nothing back for our sake who does not pretend to die, but goes through death to rescue us from all the powers of evil. Catholics must never forget that these same qualities in Christ, these virtues, must become our own, acknowledging all the while that the prayer is his, the work is his, salvation comes from him. One of the most important things we must keep in mind is that since the Mass is the prayer of Christ himself to his Father, our participation in the liturgy allows us to join him. As a result, our prayer takes on the power of his words.
