1 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 19, 2010 God... wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:4

2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR This Sunday the 19th at Mundelein Seminary, the Most Rev. Francis J. Kane, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, will call our parishioner Jim Sponder to Candidacy for Holy Orders. Jim is one of 16 men who will be formally admitted as deacon candidates. In the Rite of Admission to Candidacy for Holy Orders, Jim publicly and freely answers two questions from Bishop Kane: In response to the Lord s call are you resolved to complete your preparation so that in due time you will be ready to be ordained for the ministry of the Church? and Are you resolved to prepare yourself in mind and spirit to give faithful service to Christ the Lord and His body, the Church? In this way Jim is admitted into the rank of candidates for the diaconate. Candidacy is the first official recognition by the Church of Jim's vocation to the diaconate. For the next three years, Jim will prepare through academic courses, spiritual formation, spiritual direction, pastoral ministry, personal development, field education, internships, and more. Jim has already completed a one-year period of discernment called the Aspirancy Path that included much study, prayer, spiritual formation, reflection, field ministry, spiritual direction, and retreat. Jim's wife Carmen also was required to participate in this year of Aspirancy. Her goals were to learn more about the diaconate and to discern whether she can continue to support Jim through the coming years of formation and possibly as an ordained deacon. Wives are required to write a letter of consent to Cardinal George that notes their free, informed consent to their husbands candidacy. In the Archdiocese of Chicago there are about 500 active deacons with 56 men currently in the four-year English-speaking formation program. Deacons are found in many parishes of the archdiocese. Yet a frequently asked question is, What is a deacon? Deacons have ministered in the Church since its earliest days. In the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 6, the Apostles laid hands on...seven reputable men, filled with the Holy Spirit and wisdom to assist the bishop in his ministries, among them to care for the widows and take care of the daily distribution of food in the early Christian community. With bishops and priests, deacons receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. They are ordained ministers living in the midst of the world, most often with full-time careers outside the Church. Deacons baptize, proclaim the Gospel, preach, assist at the Eucharist, witness marriages, officiate at wakes and funeral liturgies, preside at Benediction, and minister at other liturgies. The deacon is a man who is sacramentally configured to Christ the Servant, and so his ministry is to do the work of Christ the Servant. In addition to service to the Word and service to the Liturgy, the deacon s threefold ministry includes service to Charity caring for the poor, alienated, and neglected. Deacons minister in hospitals, prisons, among people with AIDS, in PADS shelters, soup kitchens, and within the various ministries of Catholic Charities and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Even in the workplace, deacons are visible signs of Christ in the community. We are very proud of Jim and Carmen! Please keep them in your prayers as they continue to answer God s call in their lives. Fr. Michael

4 SCHOOL NEWS The fourth grade class is finishing up running the mile for the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge. Keeping with the cowboy theme, first graders practiced their skills during Art Class by stamping different colored western shapes. They may even be used as placemats when sent home. Pictured are Vikas Chavda and Joey Frugoli. Pictured is Vanessa Gutierrez who still had energy left after the run to hula hoop. SCHOOL GYM GETS A FACE-LIFT The school gym was painted and will get new safety mats for the walls. We are very thankful to JMJ Decorating & Remodeling / Mr. John Saraceno and family for cleaning and painting the gym. We are also grateful to J.C. Licht Company of Hinsdale who donated the paint. This phase of remodeling the gym was made possible through the generous donations of our Alumni and other anonymous donors. The final phase will be the purchase and installation of a new gym floor. We are still seeking additional funds for this phase of the project. before after

5 PARISH ANOINTING OF THE SICK The Epistle of St. James indicates the faith of the Church about carrying on the healing mission of Jesus: Is anyone sick among you? They should ask for the presbyters (priests) of the Church. They, in turn, are to pray and anoint the sick in the name of the Lord. This prayer, uttered in faith, will bring healing to the sick and the Lord will restore them to health. And the sins they have committed will be forgiven. (James 5/14-16) Our Church has renewed an ancient practice of bringing the sick and the elderly to their parish church to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, formerly called Extreme Unction, in a communal ceremony which emphasizes the Sacrament s healing power and is conducted in an atmosphere of joy and hope. Those who receive the Sacrament are promised God s help to recover their health, or, if that is not God s will, to cope with any spiritual and emotional problems related to limited health or dying. The SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK is a sacrament for the living for those who love life and want to enjoy it in good health, for those who love whatever kind of good life a loving Father in heaven wants for them. NOTE: This year our parish Anointing of the Sick will be held during two Masses: 5:00 pm Saturday, October 2nd, and 9:30 am Sunday, October 3rd. PARTICIPATION: The anointing will occur during the Masses after the homily. Those wishing to be anointed will be called as a group to stand for approximately 10 minutes. Those who are not comfortable standing for that length of time will be seated in the front section of pews, then the priest will come to them for the anointing. To reserve adequate seating, we need to have an approximate count of those to be seated at each Mass. Those comfortable standing for the ten minutes before the altar may sit anywhere outside the reserved area and then come forward when invited. ANOINTING MASS HELPERS NEEDED We need help to usher people to the front pews and to serve refreshments afterwards. Please call the rectory and leave your phone number if you can help. SERVE THE ONE AND ONLY GOD The scriptures for this Sunday remind us that we are accountable to serve the one and only God. The first letter to Timothy states, There is one God. There is also one mediator...christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5). The Gospel parable about a master and a steward connects our belief in one God to our lives by pointing out that no servant can serve two masters (Luke 16:13a). Serving the one God as our master requires that we assist in God s work. The work of God is to lift up the poor...to seat them with princes (Psalm 113:7-8). Unlike the greedy characters in the first reading from Amos, who are obsessed with serving their earthly self-interest, we are to use the wealth of this world to care for the poor, in service of the one and only God.
