COME, HOLY SPIRIT PENTECOST SUNDAY May 23, 2010 In one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. 1 Corinthians 12:13a

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Easter Sunday seems like it was a long time ago. It was only seven weeks ago, and in the infinite scheme of the universe seven weeks is nothing. In terms of our lived experience, much can happen in seven weeks. That is why I like this quote that I found many years ago somewhere and from someone. I apologize that I cannot be more specific in my citation, but it is still a great quote: At Easter, Christ, the Divine Sun, rose in splendor; it is high noon at Pentecost and he sheds upon his vineyard the bright, warm rays that redden and ripen. Another comparison: At Easter the garden of the church is abloom with beautiful blossoms Christians newly baptized and confirmed. By Pentecost these blossoms have developed and have matured into fruit, and now hang heavily upon the trees. The Gardener who tends the trees is our Savior Jesus Christ; the sun that ripens the fruit is the Holy Ghost Now at Pentecost we have come of age. This image of the church as a garden flourishing in the light of Christ is so fitting for this time of year. At the Paschal Triduum, a few flowers were blooming around the south doors of church. Now at Pentecost, we are in the thick green of nature fully alive. That is what Pentecost is about being fully alive. When the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples at Pentecost, the Church was born as the fully living Body of the risen Christ. At Pentecost, Jesus of Nazareth the guy with the long hair and beard and sandals was gone. But now the disciples were Christ in the world. They did the teaching and healing of Christ. They worked the wonders and endured the sufferings. Christ s resurrection was the flowering of new life, and at Pentecost that new life was the Church, the Body of Christ, fully alive, present, and working in the world. I think of this fully living, flourishing Body of Christ every time I look at the wonderful work our Landscaping Committee is doing. It is not only that everything looks nice, but the beauty of the grounds say so much about who we are as a community. The beauty outside is evidence of the beauty inside, and that beauty comes in the form of commitment to and love for our parish. Thank you, Landscaping Committee. You remind us all of how our loving God brings us to life and helps us to grow, flourish and come to maturity as the Body of Christ. One of the ideas that the Landscaping Committee and I are considering is a restoration of the Rose Garden sometimes called the Mary Garden the east end of the Gloria wing of school. In addition to new designs and plantings, we would like to replace the broken walk with memorial bricks. Not only would this improve the appearance and safety of the paved areas, but it would also be a chance for people to honor loved ones, celebrate events, and support our school. I will keep you informed as this plan develops. Speaking of supporting our school, I would like to thank all of you who have donated to our recent appeal for the school. Many of you have been very generous, and I am truly grateful. Every dollar you give will be matched up to $7500 to help our school. Thank you for your support of Divine Infant School! Fr. Michael

SECOND ALL-ALUMNI REUNION EVENT On Saturday, June 5th, you might notice a larger-than-normal crowd gathered for the 5:00 pm Mass which will mark the beginning of the evening for the 2nd All-Alumni Reunion to be held at Divine Infant School. A section in church will be marked Reserved for those alumni attending the Mass. Please welcome our former students!

SCHOOL NEWS On May 11th first and second graders, their teachers and seventh grade patrols gave up their recess time to participate in a live web-cast game show in the Computer Lab. Our classes joined first thru third graders across the United States to compete in this live web-cast. The web-cast was called Word Girl and we hoped to win the Grand Prize, which was 500 books for the school! All were excited to participate in the fun vocabulary game. We did not win the Grand Prize, but we sure did have fun trying! Students enjoy a wonderful day in the sun contributing their efforts to support the school by participating in the annual Walk-A-Thon. Student pledges are collected for each completed lap around the school. This is the students way of contributing to the fundraising efforts of the school. Father Joyce stopped by to join the students in a few laps around the school along with several parents. Members of Divine Infant Jesus Student Council participated in Westchester s Clean Sweep program on May 1st. Students were assigned an area along Cermak Road. They picked up and removed garbage on both sides of the street. The children of Grade 2 crown Mary each morning and say some Hail Mary s. We are taking turns while each classmate crown the Blessed Mother. Pictured are our Save the Planet volunteers: Lauren Wajda, Robert Tworek, Vinnie Esposito, Haley Calabrese and Amelia Castillo Pictured are Ashley Onik, Grace Olen and Jack Grahn. Thank you so much to the anonymous donor who brought a beautiful, new handmade rosary for each eighth grader. We are already using them! You are very thoughtful, and we appreciate your generosity. We will pray for you.

2010 SCHOOL YEAR REGISTRATION CONTINUES Our school is part of the ministry of the Catholic Church and is an integral part of the mission of Divine Infant Jesus Parish. Developing the Faith through word and action is a critical part of the school curriculum. Our students take part in weekly liturgies, daily communal and classroom prayer, prayer services, sacramental preparations and various service projects as a means to enrich their Faith life. Pre-school and pre-kindergarten parents have the option of l/2 or full day programs for three or five days per week. Our full-day kindergarten program provides an excellent academic foundation for grades one through eight. The Faith-centered curriculum is aligned with the Illinois State Board of Education Standards. The curriculum also includes daily Religion instruction Art, Music, Physical Education and Computer classes. Extra-curricular activities include Student Government, Band and Chimes ensemble, Robotics Club, Chess Club, a before-and-after school program, Mural Club, an in-house Broadcasting Network and athletics. For more information, or to arrange a private tour, please contact the school office at BEREAVEMENT PRAYER CIRCLE We invite all who have experienced the death of a loved one to come to our Spring Prayer Circle of Remembrance, Light in the Lord. We will gather in the former convent, Kent Street at 7:00 pm on Monday, May 24th. This is an opportunity for those who are mourning a loss to pray in community with others. Refreshments will be served afterwards. If you are in need of transportation, please call Rita Raysa at RAGTIME CONCERT Thirteen year old Morgan Siever, granddaughter of Carol and Chuck Pedersen, will give a 30-minute ragtime piano concert on Sunday, June 13th, at 7:00 pm in Divine Infant Church. There is no admission charge for this concert. Morgan s debut ragtime piano CD will be available for $12.00 at the concert; $15.00 if shipped. For more information about Morgan, go to DRIVERS NEEDED Divine Infant Parish is in great need of people who can help get non-driving parishioners to Mass on the weekend. You can be scheduled for any Mass you attend, most likely once a month. Please call the rectory if you are able to help. HAPPY SPRING! As you get your garden ready for the season, the landscape committee is doing the same to get the church and school ready. If you find that you have plants that are in need of dividing or transplanting, we would be happy to take them to use around the parish grounds. Any and all would be appreciated. Please feel free to contact Julie Klemp at or Genny Panek at Thank you! LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW God gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit to help build up others in a life of faith. Is there some calling deep in your heart that you are afraid you have no talent or training for? Pray that the Holy Spirit will lead you to fulfill the calling and equip you to do it.

THE CORPORATE NATURE OF WORSHIP Fr. Douglas Martis,The Liturgical Institute, University of Saint Mary of the Lake Some time ago I was praying in a chapel, as I looked up I saw the hymnals neatly arranged in the book holders of each pew. On the cover of each book, the word Gather in gold lettering popped out against the dark background. That s our problem! I said almost out loud. For nearly a generation, we have been told and have been telling others that we have to gather in Church. Our songs reinforce the notion: We gather together to sing the Lord s praises The hymnals, too, speak: Gather, they tell us. And yet, if we stay at that level at the level of gathering only we have missed an essential aspect of the liturgy. I think of a model airplane that I can buy at the local hardware store. All of the pieces are there in the box, gathered in the same place. But they do not get to be an airplane until the pieces are assembled! The same is true of the Church at prayer. The worshiping assembly is formed into one body on a variety of levels: in speech, in song, in gesture, but also in mind and heart. And while it is true that when they gather to pray, each brings his or her own prayers, none should come with any other motive than the praise of God. The Christian community joined in public prayer is decidedly not a group of anonymous individuals who happen to be gathered in the same place and time. They are called brothers and sisters in the Lord related by nothing less than blood and water the Blood of Christ and the water of baptism. They are perpetually trying to connect every aspect of their lives with the Mystery of Christ. Assembling into one body is only possible for those willing to do so; they must come to the liturgy with openness and charity, ready to pray together, ready to share and celebrate what really matters, ready to care for one another. In some ways, the liturgical assembly never really exhausts its role because concern for others extends beyond the walls of the building. Our participation in the liturgy happens because we are members of the Mystical Body of Christ. Saint Paul explains this magnificent idea for us in the First Letter to the Corinthians. Each one of us, in his or her own and unique way has something to contribute. Since the Eucharistic Liturgy is the prayer of Christ to his Father, we can only participate in it fully if we are members of Christ. By the Sacrament of Baptism, we become members of his body and are equipped with the ability to join his prayer to the Father. When the community gathers to pray, it must pray as the body of Christ: the community prays as a kind of corporate Christ. In the liturgy, the word I rarely means one of us individuals. It usually refers to this assembly that prays as one. The my in the liturgy does not mean mine alone. It is the voice of Christ that speaks here, we fold our voices into his. The liturgical is the most exquisite presentation of the Church, since in her liturgical prayer the Church shows herself most perfectly both as the bride of Christ and as his own beloved body. This my in the liturgy is the Body of Christ, it is Corpus Christi. The initial task of the liturgical assembly, then, is to form, or better yet, to be formed into the body of Christ, reminiscent of Saint Augustine s command: Become what you receive, receive what you are. The Christian people, gathered as Christ s body, joins with him, its head and spouse, in offering a unified prayer of praise; in union with the whole Church and with Christ we participate in his prayer to Father. This gathering, moreover, is not an amorphous mass, or a group of disconnected individuals who happen to be in the same place and the same time. There is order and structure both to the gathering and to its prayer. Each member of the community has a role to play in the liturgical act. This means that the highest value of liturgical expression, in this sense, is that each person play his or her part fully. And not only that, but that each play only that part. In this way, rather than making all the members the same, each will respect the unique quality and contribution of the other. The Church has resisted calling this gathering an audience because the members of the community are assembled for a collective action, collective prayer, rather than watching or merely listening. They do not come to be entertained, to be impressed by the discourse no matter how eloquent nor by the music no matter how phenomenal. Liturgical celebrations should not be evaluated as if they were performances. We want to learn to live a Christian life that feeds into and is nourished by the celebration of the sacred mysteries. This is living liturgically. Cwww.mysticalbodymysticalvoice.com The Christian community joined in public prayer is decidedly not a group of anonymous individuals who happen to be gathered in the same place and time... They are perpetually trying to connect every aspect of their lives with the Mystery of Christ.
