2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR If you have not given any thought to it yet, you now have only a few days to figure out what you are going to do for Lent. Notice that I said do for Lent rather than give up for Lent. When I was a kid, Lent was simply about giving something up, and for me that was nothing less than torture. But the one thing I learned from that deprivation is that I truly do not need the things I give up. One year I gave up soft drinks. It was difficult, but I learned that I really do not need to drink them. Now I hardly ever have a soft drink. One year in college I gave up meat. That was really tough, but I learned that I do not need meat to make a meal. Now it is no hardship to go without meat. So this caused me to ask what the purpose of Lent is. It cannot be simply to break bad habits or lose weight or punish ourselves. Rather, I learned that by giving things up, I could live a different way, and by living a different way, I could be a different person. That, I believe, is the key to a successful Lent, and that is why I recommend doing something for Lent rather than just giving something up. Do something that will make life different. Do something that will change your habits, challenge your complacencies, and upset your routines. In other words, make Lent a different reality, a non-ordinary reality. Jesus went into the desert not simply to deprive himself but rather to live a different reality. By doing something different, we may begin to think differently, feel differently, and become different people. And that is what Lent is all about, Charlie Brown. It is about being transformed and not only into a smaller waist size. Lent is about us recovering the mystery of our baptism: Lent is about being transformed into Christ. So this year, have a non-ordinary Lent. Live differently. That may very well mean that you give something up, but do it, in order to think differently, feel differently, and become a different person. This year for Lent do something. Be transformed into Christ. But it is not Lent just quite yet! So I hope your Valentine s Day weekend is filled with plenty of romance and flowers and chocolate and all that good stuff associated with sweet lovin. Though St. Valentine does claim the 14th as his feast day, both the Roman and Byzantine liturgical calendars give the liturgy of the day to Saint Cyril and his brother Saint Methodius. Though happy Saints Cyril and Methodius day does not sound very romantic, Saints Cyril and Methodius were pretty great guys. They were Greek missionaries who brought Christianity to parts of Russia and other Slavic countries and thus are called the apostles to the slavs. The Russian alphabet is called the Cyrillic alphabet because Cyril and Methodius invented it. Then using their new alphabet, they translated the liturgical texts into Slavonic which is the liturgical language of the Russian, Ukranian, Serbian, and Bulgarian churches. The word Slavic comes from slava which means glory. So the Slavic peoples are the glorious peoples, and the 14th of February is our day. So have a glorious day, and I hope you get lots of chocolate and flowers and sweet, sweet lovin too! Fr. Michael PEOPLE OF THE RESURRECTION In the past few weeks we have been hearing about the beginning of Jesus ministry as written in the Gospel of Luke. Jesus began his ministry in the synagogue in Nazareth by reading, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me / because he has anointed me / to bring glad tidings to the poor (Luke 4:18). With those words Jesus announced the whole purpose of his ministry. He himself was to bring the kingdom of God to the poor. This is the good news of salvation that he preached and brought about during his ministry. Today we hear the Beatitudes, in which Jesus explains more fully what those glad tidings really mean. The good news is about salvation from suffering on earth and in the life to come. It is about divine favor resting on those who trust in God s love and mercy, rather than on those who trust in human plans, possessions, and power. LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW Never see a need without trying to do something about it. Blessed Mary MacKillop Copyright 2009, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

3 HOMECOMING CATHOLICS RENEWING THEIR FAITH Blessed are they who hope in the Lord. On these dark and cold days at the end of winter it is comforting to hear words of hope that come to us in the Sunday readings, especially the Beatitudes spoken by Jesus (Luke 6:17, 20-26). The Beatitudes call us to a life of hope, knowing that what brings us sadness on earth will be turned to joy in heaven. You may be feeling that hope already in your parish after the five weeks of Catholics Come Home television ads. In the last three weeks since the ads were on TV the stories have come in through phone calls and s about individuals and families who are returning to the practice of the faith because they felt a warm invitation extended from their parish. There were two special opportunities for Reconciliation in the Archdiocese and over 400 people participated, some who had been away from the church for more than ten years. The television ads not only brought people back to church, they helped practicing Catholics think about what it is that we believe. One statement in the ad called Epic initiated many conversations about our history, We developed the scientific method and the laws of evidence. There are moments in Church history that people point to when Church leaders dismissed scientific facts and those sad moments in history are always dredged up in this discussion. Looking at those facts in the context of 2,000 years of not only participating in science, but leading the way that the sciences were organized and advanced in the world gives a different perspective. To hear a great presentation on Church and science go to Fr. Bob Barron s website and listen to his sermon from Epiphany , it is sermon #469. For those Catholics who were intrigued by the TV ads to learn more about their faith, there will be an adult formation series in Lent called HOMECOMING: Catholics Renewing Their Faith. This five-week series will take place in nineteen parishes around the Archdiocese of Chicago. For a detailed list of locations and dates go to or call LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. The season of Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter. The liturgy prepares the catechumens for the celebration of the paschal mystery by the several stages of Christian initiation. It also prepares the faithful, who recall their baptism and do penance in preparation for Easter (General Norms for the Liturgical Year, #27). By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally, or a substantial number of such days, must be considered serious. (On) weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and self-imposed observances of fasting. In light of grave human needs, which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, we urge during Lent generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing all things. Thus, we translate our duty of penance into a means of implementing the right of the poor to their part in our abundance (U.S. Bishops statement on penitential observances, 1966).

6 SCHOOL NEWS Third Graders are finishing a unit on scooters. They learned about balance and support of body weight, while propelling the scooter with hands, feet or both. In this photo students are incorporating the various techniques while playing Scooter Hockey. Students at Divine Infant celebrated Catholic Schools Week with special activities throughout the week. One of their favorite activities was an Ice Cream Social / Bingo event in Langan Hall. Pictured are second graders Anthony Agrela, Femi Oyetayo, Katakyle Okeyere and Anthony Calabrese enjoying their ice cream while playing bingo and 8th graders Anthony Taylor and Marisa Castillo who expertly called out the winning Bingo numbers. Notice the pyramids of canned goods donated by the student body for the 100th day of school. Cans were given to St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry after the event. Divine Infant parishioner and dental hygienist Ms. Susan Avolas visited our pre-school / prekindergarten classes to talk to the children about dental health. She showed the students how to brush their teeth correctly and the importance of eating healthy snacks. We also had Drew Noffsinger, a music teacher from St. Barnabas Church in Chicago, entertain our pre-school / pre-kindergarten classes with a song he had written called Wiggly Tooth. The children had a great time and we thank them for coming to our school.

10 VALENTINE DAY HISTORY There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor St. Valentine. Gradually, February 14th became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball. BULLETIN ADVERTISERS Our Sunday bulletin is an important way for us to communicate with you. Producing it every week could be very costly, but through our arrangement with the J. S. Paluch Company the parish does not pay for the printing, saving thousands of dollars each year. The Paluch Company arranges for the bulletin to be supported through the generosity of the businesses that you see advertised on the back cover. Most of these advertisers are members of our local community, and many belong to our parish. During these difficult economic times, I urge you to support these advertisers with your patronage. Tell the business owners that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertisements in the bulletin. This is one small way that we can work within our own community to weather the challenges that we face. A strong and vibrant parish is good for our community and a thriving business community is good for our parish. World Marriage Day World Marriage Day is held each year on the second Sunday in February and honors the lifelong commitment of husband and wife. "Father, as we prepare for World Marriage Day, we thank you for your tremendous gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. Help us to witness to its glory by a life of growing intimacy. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness so we may become more and more One in Heart, Mind and Body. Strengthen our dialogue and help us become living signs of your love. Make us grow more in love with the church so we may renew the Body of Christ. Make us a sign of unity in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Brother. Amen" -- Fr. Bill Dilgen, S.M.M.
