1 Second Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday) April 11, 2010 Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. Revelation 1:18a

2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR A few weeks ago at Mass, we prayed for Marie Solarski among the deceased. Now this weekend we are also praying for Marie Solarski among the deceased. I am pretty sure you did not notice that, and that is ok. We pray for so many people who are sick and who have died that all the names sound the same after a while. But names sounding the same has always been a way of life in my family. Those two Marie Solarskis were my aunts. My Mom s brothers Andy and Larry both married Maries, and Uncle Andy s Aunt Marie as she was known when I was a kid died in March, and Uncle Larry s Aunt Marie died this past week. Then on my Dad s side of the family, my Dad s sister was Nancy, and Dad s brother Tommy married a Nancy. So I had two Aunt Maries and two Aunt Nancys. So both Aunt Maries died within a month of each other. I mention this for only one reason: it is Easter. Even though our consumer culture has completely forgotten Easter and pushed us on towards the next reason for spending, the Church continues to celebrate Easter. Today is the octave (or eighth day) of the Solemnity of Easter. Liturgically speaking, today is celebrated with the same solemnity as Easter Sunday or Christmas. Today as with all the days of this Easter week is a feast of the highest rank. The point of this is simple. Easter is not just a day, and the liturgy is an icon of this mystery. Easter is celebrated not just as a day but as a week of days. But it is not just a week either because the season of Easter lasts for seven weeks each week being a week of days adding up to seven weeks seven week-long days that culminate in the fiftieth day, Pentecost. On the day of Pentecost, the Gospel of John begins: On the evening of that first day of the week. In other words, we have not gone anywhere. After fifty calendar days, we are still celebrating the same mystical day, the One Great Day, the Day of Resurrection, Easter Day. This is a liturgical icon. The liturgy is telling us that Easter is not just a day but that it is The Day. It is The Only Day. The resurrection of Christ has re-created the world and transformed reality. We now live One Great Day, the Day of Resurrection, Easter Day. This is who we are as Church. We are the baptized who have died and risen with Christ. Our identity is Easter. Our reality is resurrection. Our time is The One Day, the Day of Resurrection, Easter. If you are having trouble wrapping your mind around this, then just think about Aunt Marie. Which Aunt Marie? The Aunt Marie. It is so fitting that both my Aunt Maries should die during Lent and Easter when we celebrate the mystery of Christ s death and resurrection. In Christ s death and resurrection, we are all transformed. Our personal identity and individuality are absorbed into the divine reality. This is perhaps the most difficult thing to understand about the Resurrection. It is not the resuscitation of a corpse. Resurrection is never about going back to what was. It is always about new, unexpected, unexplainable, and unpredictable life. Resurrection is about complete liberation. In the Gospels we see the resurrected Christ completely unlimited by time and space. He is everywhere and everytime. He is always with his disciples. He is never not with his disciples. Rather, the disciples just need to learn to recognize the Risen Christ always and everywhere. That is what The Aunt Marie is: the Risen Christ. That is what you and I are: the Risen Christ. As disciples of Christ, you and I follow the Lord through the limits, sufferings, doubts, and deaths of physical life into the new, limitless, unexpected, unexplainable, unpredictable life of the Risen Christ. In other words, your faith is about one thing: Christ. You are Christ. You live the reality of the resurrection. Pain, death and sorrow belong to the old, individualized way of life that we leave behind on the cross. So leave it behind. Do not allow pain, suffering and death to define you. Be defined by the resurrection. Surrender the individuality that gives you that pain, suffering, and death, and live the one, complete, new reality of resurrection. Be Christ here, now, everywhere, always. Then you will not need any other name. Live the One Day: Easter. Be the One Name: Christ. Fr. Michael

Another huge victory for unborn babies in Illinois, HB6205 also known as Illinois FOCA failed to advance in time for a vote in the House and was sent back to the House Rules Committee, rendering it dead for this session. Background: HB6205 would have increased taxpayer funded abortions through Medicaid; eliminated the Abortion Right of Conscience Act; and mandated comprehensive sex education for every student in Illinois public schools kindergarten through 12. Your calls, letters and s made an impact and forced legislators to remove their support! Thank you! PLEASE COME NEW PARISHIONERS WELCOME RECEPTION SUNDAY APRIL 11, 2010, 12:30 pm (or immediately following the11:30 am Mass) LANGAN HALL A Welcome Reception will be held in Langan Hall immediately following the 11:30 am Mass today to welcome new parishioners to our Divine Infant family. Information about Divine Infant, our school, and the organizations that make up our community will be available. Light refreshments will be served. If you are new to our parish or feel new, please come. If you are not new but would like to meet more parishioners, this is a great opportunity to do so. If you know someone who has been away from parish life and might like to see what we have to offer, please invite them to come with you. HARD AT WORK Parents Television Council (PTC) is hard at work trying to improve the quality of the TV that is being seen by all of us including our young, impressionable children, grandchildren and the whole family. Now there is a way for you to help get rid of the offensive, inappropriate programs showing up on your television. PTC is a 25-year old organization that has evolved to a concerned membership of 1,300,000 people. It was formed with the help of entertainer the late Steve Allen. Because more people are getting more concerned and more involved our methods are getting more and more effective but we still need more help! For more information on what the PTC is about, go to No obligation to do anything. Give yourself, your children and grandchildren better television. For more information, please call Don Eck at

Our Accelerated Reader Program is a special reading opportunity for children of Divine Infant Jesus School. It encourages the reading of classical children s literature and checks comprehension of reading through computer tests. During the third quarter of this school year, 724 books were read and tests taken. The Top Ten readers are: Aja Collins, Henry Panek, Sidonie MedjoMeZengue. Nicole Pechacek, Finbar Boyle, Ashley Onik, Erin Lorenzen, Tim Shuflit, Lauren Beard and Alexa Epps. This was Census week at Divine Infant. Jr. High students learned about the benefits of the census in their Social Studies classes. They found some interesting facts while investigating a census website. (Did you know that popcorn is the state snack of Illinois?) Students also wrote a persuasive essay encouraging all to fill in their census for Language Arts. Fourth and Fifth graders filled in the Divine Infant Census (What s your favorite subject at school?), and Math classes sorted and displayed some of the data. Several Divine Infant seventh grade students volunteered to deliver decorative Easter bags filled with items they donated. Candles, hand lotion, gift cards and small plants were delivered to two homebound parishioners during the week before Easter. Two parents accompanied Luis Ornelas, Dan Ornelas, Kevin Jackson, Joe Genova, Louis Herman, Carl Robst, Chris Kulnig and Alex Kwok. Just a small gesture to let our homebound friends know that we are thinking of them during this holy season. Pictured are Justin Hunter, Gianna Figueroa and Vinne Esposito designing a census poster to be displayed in the hall.

5 After many weeks of preparation, eighth grade students performed Living Stations for the parish. It was very moving. CALLED TO BE WITNESSES Thomas probably would be a good man to have in your corner in a modern-day courtroom. Even though he was willing to follow Jesus to death (John 11:16), he s not going to go out into the world now and attempt to give witness to the risen Christ when all he has at his disposal is hearsay evidence from the other apostles. No, he wants immediate evidence, a hands-on experience of Christ risen and present. The risen Christ ultimately provides Thomas with the experience and evidence he needs. Many of us, when we struggle with our faith or our belief, can identify with Thomas. But even when our faith is in relatively solid shape, we encounter people who are a bit like Thomas, who won t believe unless they are given credible experience of the risen Christ. We, then, are called to be witnesses. Like Christ, we cannot be ashamed to show the woundedness of the Body of Christ, the Church. We must even allow others to probe and examine the wounds. But we must also greet them with Peace and know that, in the glorious everlasting life of Christ risen from the dead, our wounds are not our final destiny. Our final joy is life transformed for eternity.

PERMANENT DEACONS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO One of the great legacies of the Second Vatican Council was its renewal and encouragement of the order of deacons throughout the entire Catholic Church. The Council proclaimed the Sacred Order of Deacons is to be a driving force for the Church s service or diakonia toward the local Christian communities, and as a sign or sacrament of the Lord Christ himself, who came not to be served but to serve. Please pray for deacons who faithfully serve in the parishes and agencies of the Archdiocese of Chicago. And, if you believe the Lord may be calling you to consider a vocation to this valuable ministry, please check out our web site at click on Ministry Formation and then click on Deacon Formation.
