2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR This October we have six weddings here at Divine Infant. Two of those weddings are today, Sunday. If that seems a bit odd, then just write out today's date in mm-dd-yy form and you will see why. Today is I assume this is a popular day for weddings everywhere. Maybe it is because makes it easy for husbands to remember anniversaries. Maybe just looks cool. But I think the most likely reason is that human beings find numbers interesting and even mystical. We attach all sorts of significance to numbers. People have lucky numbers for the lottery and trips to Las Vegas. There are symbolic numbers like the perfect 10 and a million dollars. There are ominous numbers like 13. Even the Bible is full of meaningful numbers: 7 days of creation, 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles, 3 days, 40 days, 40 years, and the number of the beast: 666. Bwa haw haw haw! (evil laugh for comic effect). Numbers often become meaningful because of the date of an historical event. The number 911 has taken on a life and meaning of its own because of that particular way of labeling the calendar date of the terrorist attacks on the 11th of September One of the dates that we have been hearing about and will continue to hear about for the next two years is December 21, Do an internet search on that date and you will be overwhelmed by the websites proclaiming the end of the world on that date. They make this claim based on the mesoamerican long-count calendar used by the Mayans. The Mayan people were very good astronomers. They mapped out the sky and created calendars based on their observations of the stars. This is no big deal. People and animals have been doing the same thing every day for ages. A clock is a short, simple calendar measuring the rotation of the earth based on the observance of the sun. The mesoamerican long-count calendar is a very long and complicated calendar measuring the rotation of our galaxy based on the observance of stars. The mesoamerican long-count calendar ends on December 21, 2012, and so some people have jumped to the ridiculous conclusion that the world will end on that day. But what happens when the clock reaches 11:59? The world does not end. The clock simply rolls back to the beginning. The exact same principle is true of every calendar: week, month, year, and also mesoamerican long-count calendar. So what is the point of the doomsday prophecies? Quite frankly, they are good for business. There has already been a movie out about the end of the world on There are websites and books and it all translates into cash. If the world was really ending, why would anyone need to make any money? Please do not be fooled. Please do not succumb to hype and hysteria. The world will not end on the 21st of December I will bet you a dollar that we will all be around for the 22nd and 23rd and 24th... All this comes down to what Jesus says in Mark's gospel chapter 13: about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son but only the Father. Beware, keep alert, for you do not know when the time will come. Being aware and alert means that we do not look for the end of time on a particular date but rather that we live each moment as though it was the last. This is the trick of the divine calendar. The divine calendar has only one moment: now. God is eternal. That means God is outside of time and space. God is not limited or controlled by calendars. For God, all is here and now, and for us, this is the goal of the spiritual life. If we think of God as in a distant place or distant time, then we miss the divine opportunity of this moment. Every moment and every experience is sacred because God dwells in it, and the challenge of the spiritual life is to awaken to this mystery. You can awaken to this mystery in each and every moment, in every minute, in every day, in every month, every year, and every rotation of the mesoamerican long-count calendar. There. 3 SCHOOL NEWS Last week the Kindergarteners talked about Noah s Ark. They made their own arks which they proceeded to play with upon completion. They could be overheard retelling the story and calling the animals into the ark. Mrs. Shuflit s Pre-School class took a fall walk to collect leaves and seeds. The children chose leaves to cover with crayon shavings. Mrs. Shuflit then pressed the leaves with an iron to melt the shavings. The children when saw the beautiful imprints of their leaves and seeds. The final stage of the project was putting the leaf rubbings in a construction paper frame. Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4th. Each child brought in a favorite stuffed animal. Sister Susan and Lily (her stuffed lamb) joined the class to read the story of St. Francis. They discussed how St. Francis loved all living things. The class ended with a movie of St. Francis life. Mrs. Shuflit picks out leaves as Sophie Nevers works on her project.

5 DIVINE INFANT CAR MAGNETS The Divine Infant Jesus Athletic Department will sell car magnets after all Masses on October 16th & 17th. Students will be in the Church vestibules after each Mass with both styles of car magnets. The magnets cost $10.00 each and proceeds will go to defray the cost of fielding teams in co-ed soccer, girls basketball, boys basketball, cheerleading, girls volleyball and boys volleyball. The students, parents and volunteers appreciate your support. SAVE THE DATE! The Divine Infant Athletic Department will sponsor their semi-annual pancake breakfast on Sunday October 31st, in Langan Hall. That s right, on Halloween. Come, join us for pancakes and help support the DI athletic programs. Costumes are encouraged. WESTCHESTER BLOOD PROGRAM The next community blood donor day will be held on Saturday, October 16th, at the Community Center on Westchester Blvd. from 8:15 am to 3:00 pm. Donors are needed to keep a safe supply of blood on hand for those who need transfusions because of illness or accidents. Walk-ins are welcome! For more information, please call Carl at Give the gift of life we need your type! CLOTHING DRIVE The annual clothing drive for our sharing parish is approaching. We will collect useable clothing for St. Martin de Porres. Clothing must be bagged or boxed and can be dropped off in Langan Hall on the following dates and times: Friday, October 22nd, from 2:00 to 7:00 pm Saturday, October 23rd, from 9:00 am to noon Sunday, October 24th, from 9:00 am to noon If you are not able to get to Langan Hall, please call the rectory and we will be happy to pick up the bags or boxes for you. Our sharing parish appreciates your generosity. BRACELETS FOR DONNA To help the Polak family with their medical expenses, we will sell Blue Bracelets (this is the color for colon cancer) after all Masses this weekend (October 9 & 10). The cost is $3.00 per bracelet or 2/$5.00. Checks should be made payable to My Friend, My Hero. OPEN HOUSE On Thursday, October 21st, at 7:00 pm, Montini Catholic High School will host its first open house for Faculty, staff, coaches and current students will be available to answer any questions of families who attend. Parents can enjoy a presentation from the Principal, President and other faculty members. Students can check out clubs, organizations, sports and take self-guided tours of the school building and facilities on campus.

FRESH IDEAS WANTED The Divine Infant Men s Club is looking to expand the number of our board members. Many of us have been involved on the board for over a decade and while still very much committed to the organization, we welcome new volunteers to our club. The Men s Club has operated as a social organization for over 50 years. The generosity of those attending our functions has blessed us with the ability to raise funds in support of many parish and community efforts. We could list hundreds of donations over the years but some of our more recent activities have raised funds to purchase blinds for Langan Hall, new ciboria for the church, and gym and band equipment for our school children. We also sponsor our local Cub and Boy Scouts as well as boys baseball and girls softball and joined with our local Lions Club to underwrite a parish outing to a local sporting event. We are eager to find more ways to support our Divine Infant family and neighbors especially with new activities and events. If we can raise a few dollars in the process, so much the better. None of this is possible without new members willing to share their creativity, ingenuity, and talent with our organization. If you re concerned that becoming an active board member will not fit into your busy lives, we welcome all of our parishioners to share their ideas with us. Just write us with the types of activities you d like to see at Divine Infant and drop them off at the rectory. JOIN ONE OF OUR MUSIC GROUPS Here is an update on joining one of our music groups. The DI Adult Choir opens up for newcomers at the beginning of each of the choir seasons. Currently, the Adult Choir is ready to begin the Advent/ Christmas season so newcomers are welcome to join us at our first rehearsal of the season on Wednesday, October 20th, from 7:15 until 8:30 pm in the music area of the church. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice as well as the time and dedication to devote to regular weekly rehearsals and liturgies. A complete schedule of events for the season will be distributed at that first rehearsal. The DI Youth Ensemble is open to young people of high school and college age who enjoy singing or playing a musical instrument. These young people must come to us with a blendable singing voice and some level of accomplishment on the instrument. More information on joining this group will be appearing in The Crown. The Strings of Faith are already in session for the season. They are currently working on their full season schedule. We welcome back our Chimes Ensemble who are already rehearsing and planning for the season. You will see a few new young members who have joined this year. The DI Cantors never take a break as a group. They rehearse and lead us in song year-round. We usually accept new membership to this group during the summer. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY For all the knitters and crocheters and beginners our first meeting will be on Wednesday, October 27th, at 7:00 pm in the Pine Room located in the rectory. For beginner knitters, please bring size 6 or 7 needles and one ball of skein of yarn. I will have a pattern for beginners which takes Lily, Sugar n Cream yarn. For crocheters, please bring crochet hook J and same type of yarn. Experienced knitters and crocheters, please bring a sense of humor and talent to help our beginners. If you have any questions, please contact Sue Cerny at PRO-LIFE 40 Days for Life has begun This fall, from September 22nd to October 31st, our community is one of more than 170 cities in 45 states joining together for the largest and longest coordinated Pro-Life mobilization in history the 40 Days for Life campaign. 40 Days for Life is a focused Pro-Life effort that consists of: 40 days of prayer and fasting 40 days of peaceful vigil 40 days of community outreach We are praying that, with God s help, this groundbreaking effort will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in our city and throughout America. While all aspects of 40 Days for Life are crucial in our effort to end abortion, the most visible component is the peaceful prayer vigil outside the local abortion facility. Pray the Rosary for Pro-Life Intentions Every Sunday throughout the year! A member of the Divine Infant Pro-Life Committee leads the praying of the rosary for Pro-Life intentions every Sunday after the 9:30 am Mass in the Crying Room of Church. Life Chain Thank you to all who came and prayed the rosary on Mannheim last Sunday. A special thank you goes to Deacon Jim Sinacore who led us in prayer. It was a crisp, sunny day and we had a good representation of all ages from young children to those of us who aren t so young. Every stage of life must be cherished and treated with respect. God willing, we will have a Life Chain next year on Mannheim on the first Sunday of October from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. Mark it down and plan on coming. Bake Sale The annual Pro-Life Bake Sale will be held after all Masses the weekend of October The money will help pay for our activities at Divine Infant during the year. We hear stories of foreigners who experience the healing, cleansing power of the God of Israel and give the Lord thanks. In today s episode from the book of Kings the prophet Elisha cures a foreigner named Naaman of his leprosy. Naaman returns to thank Elisha and pledges to worship only the God of Israel from that day forward. The Gospel presents the story of the cleansing of ten lepers. It is the Samaritan also a foreigner who returns to give Jesus thanks and give God glory and praise. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power, sings the psalmist. Sing joyfully to the Lord... Sing praise (Psalm 98:2, 4). Mrs. Rita Raysa, WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
