2 Page 2 The Dedication of Lateran Basilica November 9, 2014 THE CATHEDRAL URBI ET ORBI Today the Universal Church celebrates the Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome. St. John Lateran is no ordinary church. It is the pope s cathedral. There is an inscription above the entrance that expresses its significance: OMNIUM URBIS ET ORBIS ECCLESIARUM MATER ET CAPUT The Mother and Head of all the Churches in the City (Rome) and the world. This is not Roman hyperbole! For despite the fame, grandeur, and immediate recognition of St. Peter s, the history of St. John Lateran has made it the center of western Christendom. The origin of the pope s cathedral can be traced to the Emperor Constantine. On October 28, 312, Constantine won a decisive victory over his arch rival, Maxentius, at the Milvian Bridge. It was there that Constantine had a vision shortly before the battle. In the sky, he saw a shining chi-rho the monogram for Christ. Under it was the motto: In hoc signo vinces -- In this sign you shall conquer. And, with Christ s monogram emblazoned on their shields and the chi-rho carried by the standard bearer, Constantine s army triumphed. The day after the victory, Constantine ordered Pope Miltiades to convene a council at the palace on Lateran Hill. The following year the emperor installed Miltiades successor, Pope Sylvester I there. Next to the palace which had been presented to the pope, were the ruins of the barracks of a regiment loyal to the vanquished Maxientius. On that site a great church was constructed by imperial order. The church was dedicated to Our Savior on November 9, 324. The Baptistry was dedicated to St. John the Baptist. There, it is said, Pope Sylvester baptized Constantine shortly before his death. The Baptistry remains as an ancient link to the buildings built in Constantine s time. What is now the Cathedral of St. John Lateran has been rebuilt and adorned from Medieval times up to the 18th Century. The rebuilding was necessary because of barbarian invasions and wars. The great churches were often sacked and had to be restored. With its present interior, one is struck by heroic statues of the apostles that frame the nave. The sculptures are impressive and are attributed to Bernini. The interior was commissioned by Pope Innocent X. The renowned architect Borromini receives the credit and the blame for harmonious classicism that may have inadvertently destroyed greater frescoes by Giotto. Some of the Giotto frescoes were discovered in 1952 and are on exhibit. Notable for most pilgrims is the wooden altar under a baldacchino in the sanctuary. It is upon this altar that the papal Mass of the Lord s Supper is traditionally celebrated on Maundy Thursday. Every church is a visible symbol of the Kingdom here and now. A church is, as liturgical scholar Pius Parsch says, the gate of heaven, a foretaste of heaven, a preview of our heavenly home. As we celebrate the Dedication of St. John Lateran in Rome, we sense how all Catholic Churches are united in common worship and common service. The church building is both God s House and our own home. Next week, I will reflect on the most recent changes in our own church. They have long been anticipated and discussed. Thanks to the generosity of our Fil-Am group, they will be completed soon. Before the end of November, the large crucifix will be suspended over the altar. On this feast we give thanks and praise not only for the Cathedral of St. John Lateran but our own parish church. --Fr. Luczak

A heartfelt thank you to the anonymous donor who left boxes of food for us on the steps of the rectory. We are preparing to donate 20 Thanksgiving dinners to needy families in our community. For Thanksgiving, each family will receive a turkey, potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls and a pie for dessert. Thanks to your continued support of food donations, we can supplement these dinners with vegetables, stuffing, gravy, yams, soups, and other items from our food pantry to ensure that every family, whatever its size, will have leftovers! Names received by Monday, November 10, will be included in the prayer service booklet. Names received after that date will be called at the prayer service, but will not be in the booklet. On Thursday 100 shoe boxes were picked up by a member of Uncle Pete s Ministry and taken to Deborah s Place (California & Jackson) in Chicago to be given to women who find shelter and hope there. Thanks again to all the RE Families and Parishioners who supported our RE youth in this project. God worked through everyone so together we made a difference! The next Men s Club meeting is on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 in the parish hall. ADVENT WREATH LIGHTERS The Advent Wreath is a long honored tradition as we mark the weeks of the Advent season and prepare for Christ s coming in the future, recognize His presence today, celebrate His birth. The Liturgy Board invites you to light the Advent Wreath at the beginning of Mass at one of the weekend Masses during Advent. You need to arrive about ten minutes early and the instructions are few. FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES Molokai is the true story of Fr. Damien (now Saint Damien) who relentlessly gave of himself and served the lepers in Hawaii who had been exiled to the barren island of Molokai at the cost of his own life. The cast consists of Peter O Toole, Kris Kristofferson and Tom Wilkinson with David Wenham playing the role of Fr. Damien. It will be shown on Friday, November 21 st, at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Note that this is the 3 rd Friday instead of the 2 nd due to the New Parishioner Welcome Evening. Everyone enjoyed themselves eating pasta, meatballs, and the trimmings. So many people worked hard to make this evening a special event! Last, but not least we thank all of the people who came to enjoy the dinner not only to raise money for the parish, but bring our parish family together! ALTAR SERVERS MEETING There is a meeting for all Altar Servers on Monday, November 17, at 6 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Please be on time. The meeting will finish by 6:40 p.m. so those who have RE Class will be on time. Remember that your Christmas Response form is to be turned in by Monday, November 24. GIVING TREE Every December, your St. Vincent de Paul Ministry visits the Glenbridge and Niles Nursing Homes, bringing gi s, music and cheer to the residents. As many of you may know, life as a resident in a nursing home may o en be difficult. Some pa ents are recovering from an illness and will be able to get back to their homes and families, but many will remain there as a final residence. Our parish tradi on has been to share our bounty by giving nursing home residents, communal gi s which can be enjoyed throughout the year. We also give each resident a small Christmas balloon to brighten up their rooms and help spread the holiday spirit. We rely on your support to make it possible for us to con nue our Giving Tree tradi on. Giving Tree envelopes have been included in the November collec on envelopes which have been mailed to you. On Nov. 16 th, the second collec on will benefit the Giving Tree. Extra envelopes can be found at the church entrances. Dona ons may be made at any me, up to and including Christmas. Robert Barron s newly released Priest, Prophet, King program. Father Barron is Rector of Mundelein Seminary and began the Word on Fire Ministries which in recent years gave us the wonderful Catholicism series. The evening sessions will be on Monday, November 17 & 24 and December 1, 7-8:15 p.m. The morning sessions will be on Tuesday, November 18 & 25 and December 2, 8:45-10 a.m. Both sessions will include dvd presentations and discussion and will be held in the Holy Family Room and include refreshments. A free will offering will be appreciated. Invite your friends and neighbors, too! CCHD SPEAKER Next weekend is the appeal weekend for the upcoming Catholic Campaign for Human Development Collection. A representative of the Waukegan to College organization will after Communion at all the Masses. Waukegan to College helps low-income families, many who are Latino immigrants, prepare for, enroll in, and graduate from college. It also works to organize families to push for better educational opportunities in the Waukegan area. The host for the Thanksgiving Feast with all the trimmings will be John Affatati. All of the men of the parish and friends are invited. The SIJ Parish Pastoral Council October meeting was held on Thursday The following agenda items were discussed. Continued our discussion on the expansion of the bylaws to include a better defined process for identifying, evaluating and engaging new PPC members from the parish with a need for individual discernment & PPC reflection opportunity. The focus was to address both planned and unplanned vacancies on the council. We need to ensure that diversity is maintained on the council and that group and commissions are adequately represented. Cardinal George s second question for this year - The domestic church is the relationship between men and women in the church. Nature and faith tell us men and women complement each other. How can WE, as the larger church, increase, add, more Peace, Love and Charity? Also think about 2 parent families AND single parent families. Additionally, how do WE, the larger church, address Gay/Lesbian civil families with the parish? Christmas Card in the Bulletin The PPC will be posting our wishes for parishioners in the upcoming bulletin. Recap of Parish Fest there was a good turnout with a greater diversity of food. More people enjoyed the music. To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign saw additional pledges from the Parish Fest and the weekend campaign communications. Review of the upcoming changes to our worship space including the addition of the crucifix over the altar, donated by the Filipino community, the relocation of the stained glass panels to the Baptismal chapel and installation of an ambry, to hold the holy oils, donated by Father Luczak.
