2 Page 2 Fifth Sunday of Easter May 3, 2015 MAYING More than Fun and Frolic And then fall they to banquet and feast, to leape and daunce about it (the maypole) as Heathen people did at the dedication of their idolles, whereof this is a perfect patterne, or rather the thung itself. Celebrations of May vary. For example, Maytime inspired the Germans to invent May Wine - - a woodruff flavored white wine with strawberries. At Oxford, students gather below the Great Tower of Magdalen College to hear the college choir sing on May Day morning, and then try to jump off Magdalen Bridge into River Cherwell. At Prince William s alma mater, St. Andrews, students greet the dawn on May Day on the beach - - skinny dipping in the North Sea for good luck! Believe it or not... May was once considered the beginning of Summer. That explains why June 21 is still called Mid-summer. On May 1, children danced around a Maypole. Baskets filled with flowers or sweets were left anonymously on neighbors doorsteps. Fairs and parades were common. Until Communism changed May Day into a show of military might and socialist propaganda, it was a time to enjoy the beauty of nature. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, there was a word that expressed a month-long attitude of carpe diem - seizing the day. Without excuse or apology, one simply went a-maying. Robin Hood and Maid Marian went a- Maying in the greenwood. Guinevere, Arthur and the Round Table knights went a-maying in the forest near Camelot. The lyrics of Lerner and Loew capture the mood of reckless abandon for Maying. Tra-la, It s May the lusty month of May... the time for every frivolous whim, proper or im... those dreary vows that everyone takes, everyone breaks, everyone makes divine mistakes! Obviously, Maying has pagan roots. Maying has its origin in Floralia, honoring the Roman goddess of flowers, and other fertility festivals of Northern Europe. The Catholic Church tried to transform some pagan festivals. Even when rendered innocent, like the Maypole Dance, going a-maying was not tolerated by the Puritans. They tried to abolish all festivals, including Christmas! This is a 17th Century Puritan description of a Maypole ceremony: For Catholics, Maying took on a religious significance in honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary. You might ask why? That s exactly what the Jesuit poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins did in his poem, May Magnificat. Hopkins asks: May is Mary s month, and I Muse at that and wonder why.. Her reply puts this other Question: What is Spring? -- Growth in every thing.. All things rising, all things sizing, Mary sees sympathizing with that world of good, Nature s motherhood... This ecstasy all through mothering earth Tells Mary her mirth till Christ s birth To remember and exultation In God who was her salvation. Hopkins sees in Spring s Growth in everything a mystic mirror reflecting how Mary stored the grace to Magnify the Lord. Thus, Mothering earth is a matchless symbol of one who mothered Heaven in the Incarnation. There is, in May, a potential for both the flesh and the spirit, the ridiculous and the sublime. As we honor Mary this month, may nature help us to contemplate Mary s Magnificat and imitate her openness to life. -Fr. Luczak

Please bring your completed evaluation forms. -The End of the Year Prayer Service will take place on Monday, May 11 th, 7 p.m. in the Church. It will be led by our First Grade students. Family members and interested parishioners are invited to attend. Please note that registration will not be held during the prayer service. It will begin following the service. -Registration for the RE Program for Kindergarten Confirmation Yr. II (Gr. 8 & older) will begin on Monday, May 11 th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Registration forms were given to the oldest/only child of each family currently enrolled in the RE Program last Monday. Kindergarten RE is on Sundays, a.m., and all other grades meet on Mondays, 6:45-8:00 p.m. New families are welcome to come and register on May 11 th. There will be a family form, a form for each child and a permission regarding medical attention and photos to sign. We also ask you to bring a copy of each child s baptismal certificate if they were not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. Families with children who are older and have not celebrated First Reconciliation or First Communion or who have children with special needs are encouraged to call Dolores Stanton, 847/ , to discuss how we can help them in their education and formation in the faith and preparation for sacraments. But you may not know how it came to be. It was written by a sea captain who at an earlier time in his life transported black men and women from Africa to become slaves in Europe and elsewhere. He later regretted what he had done and became a pastor and preacher as well as a champion to abolish slavery forever. The of the song tell his story. This is a stirring true story of the author of that song, John Newton, and of the struggle to finally outlaw the practice of slavery in Europe. It stars the great Albert Finney as John Newton. In earliest times, a sickbed vigil was an occasion for the community to gather and strengthen the dying person with assurances of love. A thousand years ago, in part because of massive upheavals in society, a new emphasis on individual repentance captured the imagination of millions. Death was to be feared, because it was about judgment. The delights of heaven s banquet dimmed, since most people saw God s just judgment and inevitable punishment intervening. If a community gathered at all, it was not to express faith in the Resurrection, but to seek forgiveness for those who were powerless to help themselves. The dead couldn t improve their situation, but their loved ones, by expressing sorrow for sin, could. Better yet, the clergy could, if they intervened in a timely fashion, provide the absolution needed for everyone to relax. Ministry to the sick shifted away from a ministry of consolation toward a challenge to repent before it was too late. As the sense grew that most people died with their work of repentance incomplete, the color black was reintroduced to funerals. It was the old pagan way of expressing despair. No wonder they call this time in history the Dark Ages. Many layers have had to be peeled away to reveal the deepest, most positive expressions of our tradition of care for the dying. Rev.
