2 Page 2 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2016 From the Pastor s Desk Respect for Life A nation that kills its own children is a nation without hope. St. Pope John Paul II. To love as God loves is not the way of the world and for many it is difficult to understand. It s not about feelings and emo ons, but rather a convic on that all human life has value. It is the emptying of self for another. Let us treat the other in the way he or she is as a masterpiece of God s crea on, even if the other might view us differently. Whether it is the killing of an innocent child through abor on or the killing of a convicted criminal by state execu on, our hearts know that killing another human being cannot be the solu on to a social problem. We must be people of life, hope and mercy. Pope Francis says, We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us. The Lord tells us, I desire mercy, not sacrifices (Mt 9:13). The United States is the most lenient in its treatment of abor on. We are one of only 9 countries in the world who permit abor on a er 14 weeks of pregnancy and one of only four that allows abor on for any reason a er viability... Who are the other three? China, N. Korea, and Canada. (Americans United for Life - We must begin with our children, teaching them to be a people of hope. Our example of self-sacrifice for others must show them how to replace a culture of death with a culture of life. Our Holy Father Pope Francis calls for radical ac on to save the lives of the innocent children when he said: Defend the unborn against abor on even if they persecute you, calumniate you, set traps for you, take you to court or kill you. Once we understand what it means to love as God loves we will be able to see the dignity that exists in every human being, born and unborn, and we will be compelled to speak up for the vic ms as well as those who vic mize. Only then will we be able to claim that we are people of life, hope and mercy. Many think that when the chance of recovery is gone we can go ahead and bring about death. Can prolonged pain legi ma ze a request for death? The Congrega on for the Doctrine of the Faith (05/05/1980) tells us "no." "Even then our life has purpose and we s ll must die in God's me and not our own." As the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#2280) says: "It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life... It is not ours to dispose of." Are we convinced of the truths of our faith? Do we speak up to defend the lives of each and every child with the knowledge that he or she is the supreme gi from our Creator? One of the deepest desires of the human heart is to discover our iden ty. So o en, as a society and as individuals, we iden fy ourselves by what we do. We base our worth on how produc ve we are at work or at home, and we determine our lives to be more or less good depending on the degree of independence or pleasure. We may even begin to believe that if our lives, or those of others, don t measure up to a certain standard; they are somehow less valuable or less worth living. Respect Life Month is a fi ng me to reflect on the truth of who we are. Our worth is based not on our skills or levels of produc vity. Rather, we discover our worth when we discover our true iden ty found in the unchangeable, permanent fact that we are created in God s image and likeness and called to an eternal des ny with him. Lord, how can you bless us when we con nue to kill our children? -Fr. Mario

Please remember to be on me for your mee ngs with your Staff person. *Confirma on Year I & II Candidates helping with the service project for the Taste of SIJ on Monday should come to the Holy Family Room at 5:30 p.m. You will be working in there. *RE Families are reminded to please park in a parking space on Monday evening and either come to the door near the RE Office to pick up your children or meet them out by the orange cones. This is for everyone s safety, especially the children! If you come into the building, please remain by the RE Office un l 8 p.m. and/or the bell rings. Please do not go and stand outside classrooms. SIJ Outreach Ministry 60 TH ANNIVERSARY LUNCHEON July 22 nd was the 60 th Anniversary of St. Isaac Jogues Parish. We have much for which to praise and thank God our faith, our ministries and service, our community, all God has accomplished in and through us! We will mark this special time of our parish life with an Anniversary Mass on Sunday, November 20 th, at 12 Noon. Our Dean, Fr. Ron Kalas, will preside. A 60 th Anniversary Luncheon will be held that same day, November 20 th, at Lone Tree Manor, 7730 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Niles, 1:30-5:30 p.m. Tickets for the luncheon are $30 and there will be a cash bar. We are inviting former Pastors, Associates, Weekend Presiders, and Deacons to join with us. Please spread the word to former parishioners and SIJ School alumni with whom you are in contact. Tickets will be on sale in mid-october.

4 Page 4 Page 4 Twenty-seventh The most Sunday holy in Ordinary trinity Time May OCTOBER 22, 20162, 2016 FEAST DAY WEEKEND & TASTE OF SIJ St. Isaac Jogues Feast Day weekend is October 15 16! Everyone is invited to come and share in the celebration! We encourage you to invite former parishioners to come home and join us, as well as your families, friends, neighbors, for a wonderful time of prayer, food, music, friendship and fun! The Solemn Feast Day Mass will be at 5 p.m. on Saturday with Native American flute music provided by Mr. Bill Buchholz. The Taste of St. Isaac Jogues follows until 7:30 p.m. down in the Parish Hall (there is an elevator) featuring tastes from ten different countries Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, the Philippines, Poland, and the United States. Tickets are 50 cents each and tastes/beverages/desserts will be 1-4 tickets each. Then the party moves upstairs to the Holy Family Room for dancing and listening enjoyment to the music of Patty and the Melts (aka Lisa Hall and Family) until 9:30 p.m. We will pull the $100 early bird winner of the SIJ 2017 Replace the Roof II Daily Raffle! Raffle booklets will be available until 7 p.m. that night to get into the early bird drawing! On Sunday we invite you to come to the Holy Family Room after Mass for hospitality and the opportunity to share stories of SIJ with friends old and new. There is also the chance to register for the parish if you are new or have not had time to complete this helpful task. If you would like to help that weekend, please sign up in the Holy Family Room today or next weekend. We would also appreciate if you would sign up to bring a dessert (cookies, brownies, other types of bars, etc.) for the Taste of SIJ dessert table. FIRST FRIDAY On First Friday, October 7 th, devotions will begin with the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at the end of the 8 a.m. Mass and ten minutes of silent prayer. Then the Rosary Group will lead the rosary. Quiet adoration will continue until 3:00 p.m. At that time we will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet followed by Benediction. Adorers are needed from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Please sign up for a half hour, an hour or more on the sheets that are in the Holy Family Room today. 7 Page 7 Page 3 Twenty- SEVENTH The most Sunday holy in Ordinary trinity Time May OCTOBER 22, 20162, 2016 Dear St. Isaac Jogues parishioners, Recently, we lost our beloved past chairman, Joe De Sario, to pancreatic cancer. Below is a story of one of Joe s memorable clients. St. Isaac Jogues Outreach Ministry Story: A young man in his 20 s came to our ministry in need of help. He had suddenly found himself homeless and was living in his car. A relative with whom he had been living suddenly disappeared, leaving him with an expired lease and no place to live. He came to us because he was hungry, but he also needed someone who would listen to his story. We helped him out with a Jewel gift card so that he could get a sandwich and a glass of milk. The young man was looking for an affordable apartment, preferably with roommates to share the expenses. He was worried that he would have to continue living in his car because the initial costs of establishing a lease were beyond his means. Although he had a job downtown, he had no money saved up for a security deposit. I told him that if he found an apartment, we might be able to help him out with part of the initial payment. He found an apartment. Over the course of several days, I worked with the potential landlord, documented the paperwork and sent the landlord a check for a partial payment. Our client has a roof over his head. He s working. He s on his way. This is a success story made possible by your generosity and prayers. Peace be with you, Your SIJ Outreach Ministry RESPECT LIFE MONTH: MOVED BY MERCY We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us. -- Pope Francis He lay helpless and alone on the roadside, half dead from the robbers merciless beating. Two travelers came upon the injured man, but rather than offer assistance, they simply avoided him. Finally, a third passerby was moved with compassion at the sight of him (Luke 10:33) and went out of his way to help. In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, we can see ourselves in each person. Like the robbers, we have hurt others. Like the priest and the Levite, we have failed to show compassion. Like the injured traveler, we have suffered in body and spirit, feeling rejected and alone. Yet God never stops offering each of us his mercy, a concrete reality with which he reveals his love (Misericordiae Vultus #6). We have been treated with mercy ourselves, and Jesus tells us to go and do likewise (Luke 10:37), giving us the roadmap of the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. Each person has a place in God s heart from all eternity (Amoris Laetitia #168). Within this context, Pope Francis reminds us, we are called to protect our humanity, and this means, in the first place, accepting it and respecting it as it was created (AL #56) Like the Good Samaritan, may we always treat each person with merciful love and respect that affirms the gift of his or her life. c USCCB, 2016
