2 Page Two Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 21, 2014 THE TREE OF LIFE You may certainly find it in a William Morris tapestry, a Persian carpet, a stained glass window or a banner in your parish church. It is the Tree of Life. It is an ancient symbol. Surprisingly, the Tree of Life has been used in biology and philosophy as well as a common motif in various religions. Charles Darwin s vision of evolution as a tangled bank was illustrated in a tree-like diagram. That diagram of phylogenesis is metaphoric Tree of Life. But the Tree of Life is much more relevant as a mythic or religious symbol. For me, a high point in experiencing the significance of the Tree of Life was in the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annuziata in Otranto. Otranto, at the southeaster tip of the heel of Italy, is the setting for Horace Walpole s gothic novel. Its Cattedrale dates back to Normal times (1080). It is most famous for its mosaic floor which has a massive representation of the Tree of Life. The Cattedrale has no pews, which makes it possible to travel up and down the tree. You will encounter, as you do, Christian saints and legendary heroes like Alexander the Great and King Arthur. You may be charmed by the Queen of Sheba, exotic birds and fish, or recognize familiar allegories. The great Tree of Otranto has a fascination for the pilgrim similar to the labyrinth of Chartres Cathedral. Both engage the body and mind in a walking meditation. Human experience confirms that the tree is an ever present witness to the change of Seasons. In that, there is a pattern of hope, fulfillment and new life after apparent death. The Christmas tree and the May Pole have their origins in pagan myth and folklore, but are reinterpreted by the Christian or secular society. The Tree of Life, however, as a symbol of various religions, has a common base interpretation. It connects all forms of creation. It is the axis and center of the cosmos... the still point of the turning world. Christianity looks at Genesis 2, and sees both the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The two trees stand for the Fall of Man and Man s Redemption. The Forbidden Fruit of the one is death, the fruit of the other immortality. Most important to the Christian interpretation is the identification of the Tree of Life with the Cross. St. Bonaventure saw the Tree of Life as Christ Himself and St. Albert the Great saw it as the Eucharist. In the Pange Lingua, the great hymn of Holy Thursday, we hear: Man had sunk in Satan s snare, When his pitying Creator Did this second tree prepare, Destined many ages later That first evil to repair. During Ordinary Time, our own contemporary banner of the Tree of Life reminds us not only of Genesis and the Fall but of the Book of Revelation, heavenly healing and peace: And he showed me a pure river of the water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of it, and on either side of the river was there the Tree of Life bearing twelve fruits... and the leaves of the tree were the healing of the nations (Rev ) Last Sunday, we celebrated the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Our reflection on the Tree of Life shows us still another side to the great mystery of the Cross. Our Catholic faith sees in the Cross both dying and rising, regeneration and

3 Page Three Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 21, 2014 sanctification. Through divine mercy and love, sinful humanity realigns the integrity of Eden and the inheritance of Heaven. There is an ancient hymn usually sung at the Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday. It is called Crux Fidelis. It sums up our regard for the cross as the Tree of Life. Faithful Cross O Tree most beautiful Tree peerless and divine: Not a grove on earth can show us Such a leaf or flower as thine, Sweet the nails and sweet the wood, Laden with so sweet a burden. -Fr. There will also be an opportunity to give donations to Team SIJ Teens for the Walk for Life (Oct. 4) to benefit the Women s Centers and for the Niles-Park Ridge Crop Walk (Oct % will help the Maine Township Food Pantry) to help end hunger at both the Pancake Breakfast today and at the doors of the Church next weekend, Sept ! Please continue to be as generous as you can. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN From September 24 through November 2 parishes, organizations, and the faithful of the Archdiocese of Chicago, along with other Christians, will participate in 40 Days For Life, a national campaign of prayer, fasting, peaceful vigil and community outreach. During the 40 days individuals pray and fast for an end to abortion and continue to call upon local, state, and national leaders to protect all human life from conception to natural death. Parishes and individuals across Chicago maintain a prayerful presence 24 hours a day every day of the 40 days in front of an abortion facility to change hearts and save lives by creating a strong Culture of Life through the Gospel of Life. For a seventh year the Archdiocese of Chicago will keep a peaceful, prayerful vigil at Albany Medical-Surgical Center (a late-term abortion facility) at 5086 N. Elston Avenue (Elston west of Cicero) in Chicago. In support of this 40 day effort, St. Isaac Jogues and St. John Brebeuf Parishes are working together to provide prayer coverage on the Feast of the North American Martyrs, Sunday, October 19, from Midnight to Midnight. This is a special opportunity for us to give witness to our faith in Christ and to our belief that human life is sacred and is to be respected and protected. Religious Education News Our Fall Service Project of packing 100 shoe boxes with toiletries, etc. for a women s shelter in Chicago is now in the collecting items phase! Students are encouraged to do extra chores to earn the toiletries, use part of their allowance or make a sacrifice and use the money saved from that sacrifice to help others. All items are to be new and brought to any class session this month! Each RE family (and interested parishioners) is asked to help as best they can per the following list: Gr. 1 Shampoo; Gr. 2 Toothbrushes; Gr. 3 bars of soap; Gr. 4 & Initiation tooth paste; Gr. 5 (Mrs. Livorsi) washcloths; Gr. 5 (Mrs. Allegretti) hand towels; Gr. 6 women s deodorant; Confirmation Yr. I lotion; Confirmation Yr. II white socks; All prayers! If parishioners would like to support the above effort, we welcome you to do so. Donations of the above items can be brought to the Holy Family Room when you come for Mass the next couple of weekends. The First Reconciliation Meeting for the families of Ms. Bello s class will be Monday, September 22 nd, 6:45-8:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. At least one adult family member is expected to attend for each child. Home materials and calendar will be distributed. Children are to go to class as usual. YANKEE CANDLE FUNDRAISER The smell of candles helps set the mood for those special holiday seasons and meals! Candles and holders make great holiday gifts as well! And fortunate is our parish because Guild One of the Women s Club is sponsoring a Yankee Candle Fundraiser soon! It will include two delivery dates one before Thanksgiving and one before Christmas. Start making your gift and holiday decoration list! There will be plenty of candles (jars, votive & tea lights, tarts), potpourri, holders, house/car fresheners and scents to choose from. Your purchase will benefit the parish! Catalogs will be available and orders w/payments taken October 4-5 and October for delivery in time for Thanksgiving. Orders will again be taken in November for delivery before Christmas. More info coming soon!

Participate in the Baby Bottle Project and join the efforts of the Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland to provide counseling, ultrasounds, and material and spiritual support to women who are pregnant. All you need to do is pick up a baby bottle in the Holy Family Room or one of the Church doors next weekend, September 27-28, and put your spare change or monetary sacrifices into the bottle during the whole month of October. Return the bottle with your donations the weekend of October Pray for those who are pregnant and joyful, for those who are pregnant and fearful, and for those who work to support them and the gift of new life they carry! Your change, sacrifices and efforts will make a big difference! Thank you for your help. FEAST DAY WEEKEND We will celebrate the Feast of St. Isaac Jogues & the North American Martyrs the weekend of October On Saturday, October 18, the Solemn Feast Day Mass will be at 5 p.m. and will include Na ve American music by Mr. Bill Buchholtz. Following the Mass we will hold a Taste of St. Isaac Jogues down in the Parish Hall. Ten groups will be providing tastes including Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Pales ne, the Philippines, Poland, and the United States. Food and beverage ckets will be fi y cents each and nothing will be more than four ckets! Music and storytelling will feature Bill Buchholtz.
