2 Page Two Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 29, 2013 to Nagasaki. The group was brutally tortured. Hung by their feet, they were submerged in water until near death. Needles were inserted under their finger nails. Then they were beaten until unconscious. The object was for the Christians to renounce their faith. While some of Lorenzo s companions did give up their faith, he remained steadfast. On September 27, 1637, Lorenzo and his companions were taken to the "Mountain of Martyrs." Before their final torments began, Lorenzo declared: I am a Catholic and I wholeheartedly accept death for God. If I had a thousand lives to offer, I would offer them all up to Him. San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila (c ) Lorenzo Ruiz was born in Binondo, Manila. His estimated date of birth is With a Chinese father and a Filipino mother, Lorenzo became fluent in Chinese and Tagalog. Both of his parents were Catholic. He was educated by the Dominican friars, served Mass and eventually became a sacristan and clerk at a local Binondo church. He was trained as an escribano (stenographer) and calligrapher. Lorenzo was married to a Filipino woman, had three children, and led an untroubled life until In that year, he was accused of killing a Spaniard. With "unequal" justice for the native population during Spanish colonial rule, he feared a death sentence. Lorenzo sought asylum with three Dominican priests, a Japanese priest and a Japanese layman bound for Japan. Japan, at this time, was ruled by the anti-christian Tokugawa shogunate. Thus, for Christians to be in Japan or Okinawa was extremely dangerous. A full scale persecution of Christians was underway. When Lorenzo and his companions came ashore at Okinawa, they were promptly arrested and brought Then Lorenzo and his still faithful companions were hung upside down and over a pit known as horca y hoya. Considered the most painful way to die, the process added rocks to the weight of those being tortured. The victims eventually suffocated, crushed by their own weight. After two days, Lorenzo did die of suffocation and a massive hemorrhage. His body was cremated and his ashes thrown into the sea. Lorenzo Ruiz was beatified on February 18, 1981 by Pope John Paul II. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 18, He is the first Filipino to be so honored. On the twentieth anniversary of his canonization, Cardinal Rosales said: "Wherever the Filipino may go, he carries his faith in God." On this Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila, we extend our appreciation and warm regard for the Filipino Community. We thank them for sharing their faith and culture with us. -Fr. Luczak

3 Page Three Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 29, 2013 FEASTDAY WEEKEND From September 25 through November 3 parishes, organizations, and the faithful of the Archdiocese of Chicago, along with other Christians, will participate in 40 Days For Life, a national campaign of prayer, fasting, peaceful vigil and community outreach. During the 40 days individuals pray and fast for an end to abortion and continue to call upon local, state, and national leaders to protect all human life. Parishes and individuals across Chicago maintain a prayerful presence 24 hours a day every day of the 40 days in front of an abortion facility to change hearts and save lives by creating a strong Culture of Life through the Gospel of Life. For a sixth year the Archdiocese of Chicago is keeping a peaceful, prayerful vigil at Albany Medical-Surgical Center (a late-term abortion facility) at 5086 N. Elston Avenue (Elston west of Cicero) in Chicago. In support of this 40 day effort, St. Isaac Jogues and St. John Brebeuf Parishes are working together to provide prayer coverage on the Feast of the North American Martyrs, Saturday,October 19, from Midnight to Midnight. This is a special opportunity for us to give witness to our faith in Christ and to our belief that human life is sacred and is to be respected and protected from the moment of conception. Sign up is taking place in the Holy Family Room beginning TODAY. With our day of prayer being a Saturday, we hope many will be able to participate. This is a special witness and service opportunity for our parish! Please give serious and prayerful consideration of this invitation to be a peaceful, prayerful voice for life. Talk with your family, friends and neighbors and plan on an hour to pray at the facility on October 19 th. We will especially need volunteers for those early morning hours beginning at midnight. For more information please call Dee Stanton, 847/ We will celebrate the Feast of St. Isaac Jogues & the North American Martyrs the weekend of October On Saturday, October 19, the actual feast day, parishioners have the opportunity to witness to our Catholic faith by praying outside a facility on Elston Avenue that performs abortions as part of the 40 Days for Life Campaign. The Solemn Feast Day Mass will be at 5 p.m. and will include Native American music by Mr. Bill Buckholtz. Following the Mass, 6:00-7:30 p.m. we will hold a Taste of St. Isaac Jogues down in the Parish Hall. At least eight groups will be providing tastes including American, Filipino, Indian, Irish, Italian, Middle Eastern, Nigerian, and Polish. Food and beverage tickets will be fifty cents each and tastes will probably be 1-4 tickets. Music and storytelling will feature Bill Buckholtz. Then the fun moves to the Holy Family Room where Patty and the Melts (Lisa Hall & family) will play, sing and encourage us to dance until 10 p.m.! On top of all this we will also draw the winning tickets for the PARISH 50/50 RAFFLE (are you in it yet to win it?) Bring your families and friends! On Sunday we will have hospitality after all the Masses in the Holy Family Room. Come in for some treats and for conversation. Invite former parishioners to join us for some or all of the feast day weekend activities. We are who we are as a parish community because of those who were here before us and who are here now! Come together as we give thanks for all God has accomplished through our parish and pray for the grace and strength to continue to proclaim and live the Gospel!

We will leave SIJ at 12:30 or so and return about 4 p.m. Those who plan to attend must have a permission slip and turn it in by October 1 st. Your parent/guardian can sign it on Monday evening if you need one. The Human Concerns Commission will meet on Tuesday, October 1 st, at 7 p.m. in the Religious Education Office. ALTAR SERVER TRAINING Training of new Altar Servers begins this Monday, September 30, at 5:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Students in 4 th Grade and older are invited to be part of this ministry. If you have not turned in a permission slip yet, please bring it with you that night or have a parent/ guardian come into the Holy Family Room with you to sign one. Come spend an hour or two or three with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and assist our nation with the power of prayer. BLESSING OF ANIMALS The Blessing of Animals will be held this Saturday, October 5, at 1:00 p.m. by the field next to the Rectory. Congratulations to Dee Stanton, St. Isaac Jogues 1 st recipient of the Christifideles Award. This award, given by the Archdiocese of Chicago recognizes Catholic laypersons who demonstrate by participation in parish life, the personal and ministerial renewal called for by the Papal Exhortation, Christifideles Laici, (instituted by Pope John Paul II in 1988) calling the laity to the vocation of responsibility for the Church s life springing from the gift and mission of their baptism. The award is presented during a special mass at Holy Name Cathedral, during which the Archdiocese recognizes and extends their appreciation to individuals who go above and beyond in sharing their talents. The award is recognized as a symbol of extraordinary service.

The Fifth Pillar of Islam: The Pilgrimage (Hajj) Hajj literally means the pilgrimage to Ka ba and it is during the first ten days of the last month (12 th, called Dhu al-hijja) of the Muslim lunar calendar. The hajj is an obligatory religious duty for every adult Muslim, male or female, once in his or her lifetime, once one is able to take the journey and can afford travel costs without debt or borrowing. Muslims, since the time of the Prophet Muhammad according to God s command in the Qur an and following the Prophet Muhammad s instructions, come from all corners of the world to visit Ka ba, the first house of worship of God on earth, to circumambulate it seven times, chanting: At your call, O God, here I come. You are One Alone, have no partner, all dominion and all praise and glory belong to you. Performing the prescribed rites of circumambulation to Ka ba, running between the hills of Safa and Marwa, standing and crying in supplication to God on the barren hot plain of Arafat, stoning the devil for three days, the pilgrims slaughter a goat or sheep in reenactment of Abraham s sacrifice of his son to God. The hajj is a peak religious experience for Muslims, an eloquent demonstration to attest to the unity of God and equality of all humankind before God. Participate in the Baby Bottle Project and join the efforts of the Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland to provide counseling, ultrasounds, and material and spiritual support to women who are pregnant. All you need to do is pick up a baby bottle or two in the Holy Family Room TODAY, and put your spare change or monetary sacrifices into the bottle during the month of October.
