2 Page 2 Christ the King November 20, 2016 From the Pastor s Desk Thanking God for 60 th Anniversary celebrations Many Americans think of Thanksgiving as a wonderful time to celebrate getting out of school for a long weekend, and eating a great dinner. Or, maybe they think it is the start of the Christmas holiday season. What is the real meaning behind Thanksgiving? We can trace this historic American Christian tradition to the year After the harvest crops were gathered in November 1623, Governor William Bradford of the 1620 Pilgrim Colony, Plymouth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts proclaimed: "All ye Pilgrims with your wives and little ones, do gather at the Meeting House, on the hill there to listen to the pastor, and render Thanksgiving to the Almighty God for all His blessings." This is the origin of our annual Thanksgiving Day celebration. We have every reason to celebrate and thank God for the 60 th Anniversary celebration of the Church of St. Isaac Jogues. It began way back in July, 1956 on a six and one quarter acre tract of land on Golf Road just west of Washington Avenue. The 280 families who made up the nucleus of St. Isaac Jogues Parish had previously attended Mass at St. John Brebeuf Church in Niles, St Martha in Morton Grove, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview, or St. Mary Church in Des Plaines. A Rectory house was purchased at 221 Washington Road in Glenview. In February Construction began on a combination church and school building at 8101 W. Golf Rd. The Sisters of Christian Charity opened St. Isaac Jogues School on September 16, Enrollment increased to 1,432 in In June of 1992, our school merged with St. John Brebeuf School and Our Lady of Ransom School. No matter what turn of events have taken place with the merger of our School and decline in the number of families, St. Isaac Jogues continues to be a vibrant parish, centered on Christ our Universal Savior. It has a strong sense of its history which in turn helps us to have a better sense of identity to build on for the future. Looking into our history, we see we have come a long way. Celebrating our 60th - gives us the opportunity to join together in focusing on the church as a body of believers who have been blessed by the Lord. It can also be a wonderful time to benefit from the gifts of the people. And it's an occasion for church members of all ages to tell and hear stories of the past and present days of the church. We need to model our lives after the pattern of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Universal King. Pope Pius XI instituted The Feast of Christ the King in 1925 for the universal church in his encyclical Quas Primas. He connected the increasing denial of Christ as king to the rise of secularism throughout Europe. At the time of Quas Primas, many Christians (including Catholics) began to doubt Christ's authority and existence, as well as the Church's power to continue Christ's authority. Today, the same distrust of authority exists, although the problem has gotten worse. Individualism has been embraced to such an extreme, that for many, the only authority is the individual self. The idea of Christ as ruler is rejected in such a strongly individualistic system. Also, many balk at the idea of kings and queens, believing them to be antiquated and possibly oppressive. Some even reject the titles of "lord" and "king" for Christ because they believe that such titles are borrowed from oppressive systems of government. However true these statements might be (some kings have been oppressive), these individuals miss the point: Jesus said: Christ's kingship is one of humility and service. St. Isaac Jogues is a Parish of service and we have much for which to be grateful. St. Isaac Jogues News Upcoming Meetings / Events Liturgical Ministers Gathering Tuesday, November 7PM in the Church All Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Music Ministers, Presiders, Sacristans, and Ushers are to make every effort to attend this walk through of Mass and our roles and responsibilities. The evening will be facilitated by Fr. Mario and the Liturgy Board. Members of the Assembly (which is also a liturgical ministry) are invited and encouraged to come. Due to this gathering, the Liturgy Board will not meet this Tuesday, November 22 nd. THANKSGIVING DAY Patriotic Rosary will be prayed Thursday at 8 a.m. Thanksgiving Day Mass will be at 9 a.m. and will be the only Mass for the day. All are welcome to begin their holiday celebration in worship as we give praise for our blessings. Please note that parish offices will be closed.

God has been so faithful, loving, and generous to our Community of Faith and we lift up our hearts and lives in deep gratitude. We also give thanks for the men, women, and children who helped build a strong foundation of prayer, mercy, hope, and service over these past 60 years. As we move forward on our pilgrim journey to be with Christ our King, may God grant us what we need to be renewed as Church so to continue the mission entrusted to all disciples by Jesus. Together we pray Loving God, with gratitude we remember Your mercy and faithfulness to St. Isaac Jogues Parish as we celebrate our growth these past 60 years. We believe that Your Spirit and all who have been part of this parish have formed us into the Community of Faith we are today. Please bring new, unwrapped toys books, etc. for youth (preschool-teen) to Santa s sleigh in the Holy Family Room at the masses on December 3/4. The gifts will be used for their Epiphany Celebration and for some of the children will be the only new gift they receive this Christmas season. Be sure to bring your children or grandchildren to visit with Santa after the 10 a.m. and Noon Masses and take pictures with him. Santa s elves of the Women s Club will provide refreshments at all masses that weekend. All are welcome. Let s put a bright smile on each child s gift with a new gift from Santa! THE GIVING TREE Help Us Make the Christmas Season BRIGHT Join us as we sing Christmas carols and bring gi s to the residents of the Glenbridge and Niles Nursing Homes on Tuesday, Dec. 13. We ll meet in the Holy Family Room at 6:30PM sharp and then make our way to the nursing homes. Please join us! I am overwhelmed by your generosity and kindness in purchasing the wonderful and useful gi s that you have given to us Residents and staff alike really enjoyed the holiday sing along and the balloons that were passed out to everyone. There was such enthusiasm and no one does the Twelve Days of Christmas like the members from St. Isaac Jogues! Please place your dona on to the Giving Tree in the collec on plate. 8 Page 8 Christ the King November 20, 2016 AWAY IN A MANGER The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay It is an Advent custom to pad the manger with good deeds so that the Christ Child has a soft place at Christmas. Beginning next weekend, the First Sunday of Advent, you will find bags of hay at the doors of the church. When you arrive, place some hay, based on your good works, and place it in the basket. During the Presentation of the Gifts the hay baskets from each of the three doors will also be brought forward. After Mass it will be placed in a larger basket which will accumulate the hay (good deeds) each of the four weeks. When the manger is put up, all the hay will be placed inside so to be ready on Christmas for the statue of the Christ Child. How will you share the spirit this Advent in word and in deed? PIVOTAL PLAYERS Come see, and join in discussion with others, part of the newest DVD series of Bishop Robert Barron on three of the Pivotal Players of the Church s history G.K. Chesterton, Saint Catherine of Siena, and Blessed John Henry Newman.
