2 Page 2 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, 2016 CANDLEMAS DAY side... This encounter between the reality and the figure... took place for the first time at the Presentation... To carnal eyes, there is a child in the temple; to the eyes of Simeon, unsealed by the Holy Spirit, this child is more than the temple. He is the one for whom the temple has kept the ceaseless vigil. The temple is now rendered useless. Simeon proclaims prophetically that Jesus is the light of revelation to the gentiles and the Glory of God s People, Israel. He also sees that a sword of sorrow shall pierce the hart of Jesus mother Mary. In the sacrificial context, here too is an encounter - - the Mosaic sacrifice of two pigeons foreshadowing the Sacrifice of Calvary. On Calvary, the heart of Jesus is pierced with a lance and Mary s with full sympathy and great sorrow. A Feast of Encounters Before the calendar reforms of Vatican II, the Christmas Season concluded on February 2. The festival celebrated on that day can be traced back to the fourth century in the East. It has been called the Purification of Our Lady, the Presentation of the Lord, and Candlemas. But of all its titles, the ancient Greek name, Hypapante - The Encounter - can offer the most in-depth understanding of a many-sided mystery. No matter what it is called, the fortieth day after Christmas is all about encounters. The mystery of the Presentation of the Lord is first a meeting, between the Old Law and the New Law. The Old Law is fulfilled in two ways in obedient compliance and 2. in the revelation and recognition of the Messiah Both Jesus, who is brought to the Temple to be presented to the Lord with a sacrificial offering, and Mary, who is ritually purified, respectfully obey the Law of Moses. When Anna and Simeon recognize the revelation of the Messiah, they are indeed old people encountering an infant, but they are also symbols of faithful Israel being rewarded for virtue and vigilance. Another dimension of the encounter is described by Cardinal Jean Danielou. It is in the old and the new meaning of the Temple - - the place where God s glory dwells....between the appearance of the new temple at the incarnation and the end of the old temple at the passion, there was a unique period during which the two temples existed side by In the tradition of celebrating the Feast of the Presentation, there is a blessing of candles and a candlelight procession. This dramatic ritual allows us to hold as Simeon once did, the Light of Revelation. In ancient Greece, the myth of Persephone dimly foreshadowed this procession of light. To explain winter s darkness and cold, the myth tells of the Earth goddess, Demeter s daughter Persephone, who was kidnapped and taken to Hades by the god of the Underworld. Demeter lit her torches from Mt. Aetna and searched for her lost daughter. eventually, Persephone was permitted to come back for six months each year. As pagan Greeks welcomed the Spring with torch light in their mysteries, Christians would later seek to encounter Christ, the source of Eternal life and Grace. Candlemas brings together the old and the new, the young and the aged, pre-christian myth and divine revelation. It is truly a Feast of Encounter. -Fr. 4 Page 4 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, 2016 POPCORN SALE TODAY Can you smell the popcorn already? The Young Adult Service Ministry is having a popcorn sale TODAY after all the Masses! Bags of freshly popped popcorn will be available for $1 each. The money raised will be used by YASM and the Con irmation II Candidates to make 200+ sack lunches for the homeless in Chicago. Your support by a purchase of popcorn or a donation (if you don t eat popcorn) will be an act of mercy and appreciated as they help feed the hungry in the name of our parish community. CANDLEMAS The blessing of candles will take place during Tuesday s 8 a.m. Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Home candles for prayer and devotional purposes will be available after Mass. Donations will be appreciated! SPIRITUAL LIFE COMMISSION Will meet Tuesday, February 9 th, 7:00 p.m. in the RE Office. LENT REFLECTION BOOKS The Spiritual Life Commission will be making Bishop Robert Barron s Lenten Reflections book available as we did for Advent. Any donation you would like to give to support this project will be gratefully accepted. Donations may be placed in the alms boxes at the doors of the church TODAY. ST. JOSEPH TABLE The St. Joseph Table is an old tradition from Sicily. Many centuries ago there was a famine and the people prayed to St. Joseph, their patron, and asked his intercession. Rains came, the famine ended and a special feast to thank and praise God and to honor St. Joseph was prepared after the harvest. All were welcome to come and enjoy especially the sick and homeless. Though Sicilian immigrants introduced the custom to America, the celebration and feast are open to all. The Saint Joseph Table is a source of petition and thanksgiving. Most of the foods presented on the altar are acquired through begging, asking the help of people and local businesses to represent what the poor of Sicily had to do. At the end of the St. Joseph Table the remaining food and whatever money has been given in donations are given to the poor. Everyone is invited to our parish St. Joseph Table on Sunday, March 13 th beginning with the Noon Mass. The blessing of the table and serving of food will follow and continue until 4:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Per the tradition there is no charge to eat at the table but donations will be accepted for our St. Vincent DePaul Ministry to assist those in need. Be sure to bring your family and friends. We ask you to help us with this special and age old tradition by providing a meatless dish (egg dishes, roasted or fried vegetable) or desserts, money for the preparation of the table or your time (set up, serving, cleanup). Please sign up on the appropriate form in the Holy Family Room today or next week. We also beg your prayers, asking St. Joseph for his help and intercession for this beautiful time of family, community and sharing!

5 Page 5 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, 2016 MINISTRY OF CARE TRAINING Have you ever thought how you might participate in the healing ministry of Our Lord? Of how you might share the Lord s love and presence with the sick, homebound or hospitalized and the prayer and concern of our faith community by visiting them and bringing them Holy Communion? We are blessed with several compassionate Ministers of Care, but we would like to include more people in this healing work. We are especially in need of people to go to the area nursing homes (1 st or 3 rd Mondays, serving about once a month). If you are interested in the possibility of becoming a Minister of Care, please contact Dee Stanton this week to set a time to talk, 847/ or sijre2004@yahoo.com. The training will be on Saturday mornings, Feb. 13, 20, 27, Mar. 5 & 12., 10 a.m. to 12 Noon at Presence St. Benedict Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 6930 W. Touhy Avenue, Niles. A final session will be scheduled with you here at the parish to discuss our procedures. Those who want to be Ministers of Care must be mandated by the Archdiocese of Chicago and you must attend all the sessions to receive the mandate. Registration for the training sessions closes Feb. 8 th, but space is limited and we would like to help people register soon. Please pray and ask the Lord if this is where you would best use the time and talent with which He has blessed you! MARDI GRAS MOVIE NIGHT Friday Night at the Movies will be on Tuesday, February 9th, at 7 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Our feature will be Full of Grace: The Story of Mary the Mother of Jesus which is about the Mother of the Lord in her last earthly days as she works with Christ s disciples in remembering their original encounter with the Lord. As Lent begins the next day, seeing this will hopefully help us in our desire to be made new and walk ever closer to Christ on the journey of faith. Come and enjoy this beautiful film. All are encouraged to come for prayer and silent reflection. Benediction will conclude the evening.

VINCENT DE PAUL MINISTRY SERVES DINNER AT CATHOLIC CHARITIES On January 12th, members of your St. Vincent de Paul Ministry and a traveling baseball team served dinner to 50 hungry people at Catholic Charities in Des Plaines. The staff at Catholic Charities told us that they were grateful for our effort and for our donation. Our group manned the serving stations and served a hot meal of pork loin spiced with creole, chunky mashed potatoes, gravy, carrots, cauliflower, and cookies to the guests. There was even enough food for all to take home! Those who participated felt that it was a heartwarming experience that gave them a chance to do some real good for the community. The diners really seemed to enjoy the meal. We hope to continue our tradition of volunteering at Catholic Charities dinners for the needy at least twice a year. If you are interested in learning more about these types of volunteer opportunities, please contact the St. Vincent de Paul Ministry at St. Isaac Jogues by calling the main parish office number. A SVDPM member will call you back and explain the many opportunities for helping those less fortunate. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For the first four centuries or so, there seems not to have been a sense of marriage as a church institution. Christians followed civil law, which kept the wedding in a family setting. Bishops wanted people to be good citizens insofar as possible, and so they recognized the government s role in marriage. In general, they expected Christians to know that marriage was good, that marriage to other Christians was best, and to take it easy on the wild wedding parties. They agreed that marriage was a divine institution, that Christ blessed it especially, and they loved referring to the miracle at the wedding feast of Cana. Still, even when Christianity became the official religion of the empire in 380, marriage remained a family matter. On wedding days people gathered in the bride s house, where the father would give her hand to her husband, draping a garland of flowers over the couple. There were no official words to say, there was no blessing to be given. Everyone walked in procession to the bride s new home for the concluding rites and the feast. In the Eastern Empire, it soon became customary to invite a priest or bishop to give a blessing at the meal or the day before. It was a nice thing to do, completely optional, but had a photo-op feel to it that was widely emulated. 9 Page 9 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, 2016 MARCH FOR LIFE UPDATE When we were told that we were not going to the March for Life about a half hour after we boarded the bus to do so, I thought it was a joke at first. When I realized it wasn t, the air was heavy with the disappointment that all us who had left together from Chicago and Champaign-Urbana to go to Washington felt. We had come so far and were so pumped up after a successful summit the day before and now the very thing we had come for was now out of our reach. We hadn t even spent a whole day off the bus and now we had to turn around and go back home because the snow storm that was threatening DC all week was coming earlier than expected, and if we stayed, we would be stranded But on our way back we stopped in Kettering, Ohio, just outside of Dayton, and marched outside the Women s Med Center, one of the few abortion clinics left in southwest Ohio that may be closing by this spring. We were joined by residents and students from University of Dayton, and after a few student speakers who shared their stories about why they had come and many rallying cries, we marched But It was during this that it hit me that this trip was so much more about the march. Yes, to go to the big March for Life would have been incredible, but the pro-life movement is not just about marching; it s about speaking out for those who have no voice, for those men and women who feel like their only choice is abortion, and for all those who have died because they are not viewed as humans beings. The friends that joined me and I came away from the experience with new ideas and many more friends who are all joined together by the fact that we want to speak up for the dignity of all people and make sure all people receive that dignity. I want to thank you all for your prayers and support of this endeavor that, in the words of one of my friends who came along, wasn t the March for Life we wanted, but it was the Bus for Life we needed.
