2 Page Two Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time November 3, 2013 THE HOPE OF THE SOULS IN PURGATORY Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer up our prayers for them. - St. John Chrysostom One of the most consoling passages in the Bible assures us: "l will not reject anyone who comes to me... "(John 6: 37). Does that imply universal salvation? Why, then, do Hell and Purgatory have such a large part in our Christian vision? Why are they so rooted in our tradition and dogma? Salvation is offered to all, but Jesus respects human freedom. While He will not reject anyone who comes to Him, God's invitation awaits our choice. Because we are made in His image, we are truly free. God will never force us even to be happy! What keeps people from accepting God s invitation? What holds people back from happiness and fulfillment? Sin is the answer. In The Great Divorce, C.S. Lewis uses a modern parable to show why people can and do choose Hell over Heaven. Imagine that the huge abyss between Heaven and Hell could be crossed by a simple bus ride. Citizens of death s realm leave their lonely town for a holiday in Heaven. Wonder of wonders, they are invited to stay! Some do and some do not. How is it possible that some freely return to the bus bound for Hell? The answer is found clearly in another work of imagination written centuries before C.S. Lewis parable. The Divine Comedy by Dante is remembered mostly for its horrors. The Inferno - - nine concentric circles narrowing downward for the damned - - graphically portrays the fate of those who have died in mortal sin. As one has sinned, so one is punished. In Hell, there can be no hope and no end to torment. What many often overlook is Dante's fuller vision of humanity s lost condition and its need for restoration. As exquisite as the Paradiso is, Dante's view gains strength and momentum as he ascends the "Mountain of Purgatory." As Dante is admitted, seven P s are traced on his forehead by an angel. These represent the seven deadly sins-- pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust. Dante climbs from terrace to terrace on the Purgatorial Mountain. He not only witnesses sins dramatized but also corresponding virtues-- humility, generosity, meekness, right love, right use, abstinence and chastity. Upon completing the process, the P s are erased from Dante s brow. This is a symbol of a cleansing process. It transforms the sinner and makes virtue possible. But there is something more personal that happens to sinners in Purgatory. A good example of this experience is Sapia. Sapia was consumed by envy. When her native Siena was defeated, she rejoiced. On her death bed, she sought peace with God and repented. In Dante's view, those who delayed penance until the last minute, had to wait at the base of the Mountain of Purgatory one year for every year of his or her life. But Sapia did not have to wait! SOMEONE ON EARTH WAS PRAYING FOR HER! "And penitence would have diminished nothing of my debt if Pete the Comb Man in his holy prayers had not remembered me; for when I died he felt the pitying warmth of charity. (Purgatorio 13: ) It has been a venerable tradition in the Catholic Church to pray for the faithful departed. As the Second Council of Lyons (1274) expressed it, From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all, the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. On this All Souls' Sunday and during Month of the Holy Souls, let us be confident in the mercy of God. May sinners repent. May we pray for our deceased relatives, friends and benefactors. May we pray for those unremembered and seemingly abandoned. Like "Pete the Comb Man," may we reach out in charity to all the poor souls. Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord! - Fr. Refreshments will follow hosted by the parish s Human Concerns Commission. Permission slips for the First Reconciliation Retreat for the students in Mrs. Winans class have been mailed. Please sign and return them to her or to the RE Office by Monday, Nov. 18 th. The retreat is Saturday, November 23, 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. ALTAR SERVERS Please return your Christmas Availability form to the RE Office or the envelope in the sacristy by Monday, Nov. 11 th. If you do not, you will scheduled as needed. There will be a meeting for all Altar Servers on Monday, November 18 th, at 6 p.m. in the church. The holiday schedule will also be distributed. Adults interested in being baptized, received into the Catholic Church or completing their Catholic Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation are invited to call Dee Stanton, 847/ for more information. To provide these services they need your help the AMS receives no federal funding. There was no envelope for this first-ever national collection in your packet, but we feel it is important to support our military and veterans in this way. Jean Arthur is the stable family member of an offbeat clan of free spirits who falls for Jimmy Stewart, the down-to-earth son of a snooty, wealthy family.
