2 Page 2 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 29, 2015 PASSOVER PROGRESS: The Sacred Triduum In common parlance, progress means to move forward or advance... to develop to a higher, better or more advanced stage. But there is another meaning that is more relevant to Holy Week. A progress is also a royal journey marked by pomp and pageantry... a state procession... an onward movement, toward a goal. Lent has been a journey with Jesus. Holy Week begins with a grand spectacle. Palm Sunday welcomes the promised Messiah-King. Waving branches, laying cloaks and other garments before Him, the crowds shout: Hosanna to the Son of David. The pageantry is painfully ironic because, in five days the Messiah-King will be driven out of the Holy City to be crucified as a criminal! Ahead of us is the greatest of all miracles - - the Resurrection. Sometimes we forget that the progress would not be possible without a process. Easter is the climax of a process. The Sacred Triduum is A three day unfolding of the Easter miracle. Why are we uneasy about that? Could it be that we prefer our miracles to break through the ordinary in an instant? Perhaps we do not want the drama of salvation to be such an untidy mystery. Do we want a Deus ex machina? Classical critics used this term with great scorn. For plays that required the descent of a deity in a chariot to resolve the plot or save a hero were considered weak in internal development. Such plays were considered neither true nor real. saved from the Angel of Death or pharaoh s army at the Red Sea? The dramatic scope of the first Passover foreshadows our Christian Passover. See in Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil the continuous flow of divine mercy. The late Peter Mazar s description of the beginning of the Triduum has always struck me as an invitation to join in the royal progress of the Paschal Mystery. Once the sun sets on Holy Thursday the entire church is swept into its Passover. Time stops: As wondrously strange as this may seem, we enter eternity. The Christian Passover will not be understood apart from keeping watch, waiting, anticipating. The Paschal Triduum requires of us a liturgical piety that prods us to put everything else aside - - even time itself - - in the presence of awesome mystery. This year, become more fully party of the process. Become part of the progress that is both royal and divine. Participate in the awesome mystery of the Triduum. -Fr. Luczak The Triduum is a single celebration of the Paschal Mystery presented over three days, under different aspects. -Roman Missal If we separate Easter from the Triduum we want the miracle without its meaning. Imagine the Jewish Passover without the 40 years in the desert. To celebrate the Promised Land without the Covenant... would that make sense? Would it make sense not to have been

It was at the Last Supper Jesus gave us the Eucharist, His Eternal Presence in our lives. He gave us the Eucharist to remind us that He is always with us to help strengthen us as we go about living our lives as his disciples. The Eucharist also points to Christ s command that we all be one in love for Him and for each other. So, on this night we travel about to share our celebration of the Holy Eucharist with one another. Our tradition of making a pilgrimage to other churches on Holy Thursday will take place again this Year. The mass of the Lord s Supper is at 7:30 p.m. We leave promptly at 9 p.m. and will return to St. Isaac s to spend some time in adoration here in our own parish. We do not have a list of churches yet as many parishes tell us they have not yet determined how long they will be open that night. If you wish to join us, it is necessary to reserve a seat on the bus. It is important to make a reservation early as we will have just one bus. Please call the Rectory at 847/ to reserve your place. A donation of $5 per person is requested to offset the cost of the bus. It will be collected that evening. Please remember we get on and off the bus several times and some of the churches have stairs or are a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the building.

4 Page 4 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 29, 2015 ŒWIENCONKA EASTER HALLOWFARE JEWISH SEDER In many parishes throughout America, there is a special blessing of Easter food called Świenconka or Hallowfare. It usually takes place on Holy Saturday morning or early afternoon. A time honored custom among Catholic and Easter Orthodox Christians, Hallowfare can also be a lesson in Christian symbolism. Each year, Polish Ukrainian, Lithuanian, and other Eastern European parishioners bring their Easter Baskets to Church. What each basket contains varies, but all are richly and carefully laden with food. Food conforming to custom - - richly sweet yeast cakes and bread, butter lambs, garlic sausage, smoked ham, brightly colored eggs, horseradish, salt and wine - - is brought in baskets covered with embroidered cloths and sprigs of boxwood. Less traditional baskets are piled high with colored bunnies, marshmallow chicks and cream filled candy eggs. Such glorious indulgence recalls former times when Lent required heroic sacrifice and fasting which excluded meat, eggs and dairy products. The contents of Easter Baskets seem to say: Let the feast begin! But traditional baskets proclaim a good deal more. They are a Christian counterpart of the Jewish Seder Plate. The parallel is real food for thought. JEWISH SEDER Shank Bone of the Lamb (Passover Lamb) Roasted Egg (new life) EASTER BASKET Ham on the Bone or Sausage (Pork recalls the freedom from Kosher Laws) Colored Eggs (glorified life) Horseradish Root/Bitter Herbs (bitterness of slavery) Ground Horseradish & Pepper (bitterness of the Lord s Passion - sorrow for sins) Salt Water (tears of bondage) Matzah (unleavened bread of haste) Charoset (chopped fruit seen as mortar for the Pharoah s monuments) Wine (joy/happiness blood of the lamb) Salt (wisdom/tears of the Virgin Mary) Yeast Bread or Cake (the transforming power of the Resurrection) Lamb Cake or Butter (Jesus understood as the Paschal Lamb of the New Covenant) Wine (Blood of the Lamb of God ) The correspondence between the Jewish and Christian ritual foods is not coincidental. Both reflect an interpretation of a faith experience through a meal that celebrates freedom. The Christian use of symbolic foods seems strongest where the Jewish population was large - - Poland, Russia, Lithuania, and Ukraine. From this it seems likely that traditional Easter Baskets consciously reflect Jewish Passover customs with Christ s Paschal Mystery as their fulfillment. The Hallowfare (Świenconka) will take place on Holy Saturday, April 4th at 1:00

5 Page 5 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 29, 2015 COLLECTIONS FOR HOLY THURSDAY AND GOOD FRIDAY The collection on Holy Thursday is taken up to help those in need and so will be given to our Sharing Parish, Maternity BVM, for their fund to help those who come to them for assistance. Without these extra funds, they would be taking from their general parish funds to help those in need. They are very grateful for this extra support. The collection will be taken up at the usual time during the Mass. Every year each parish in the United States takes up a collection on Good Friday, as designated by the Holy Father. This collection helps support the work of the Franciscans in the Holy Land. The money is used to care for the people and places of the Holy Land. This collection keeps Christianity alive in this area made holy by the life, suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Please place your envelopes/ donations in the alms boxes at the doors of the church that day. Thank you! FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES Resumes on Friday, April 10 th, when we will be showing The Hundred Foot Journey with Helen Mirren, Om Puri and Manish Dayal. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film begins at 7 p.m. The movie is about an Indian family whose restaurant in India burns down and their decision to re-open the restaurant, but not in India in France. They choose a place near a small town directly across from a very popular and expensive French restaurant and that is when things start happening. This is a charming, delightful, warm and funny picture that will touch your heart. As always it s all complimentary including the popcorn and beverages. All are welcome. Bring your friends. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY: APRIL 12 In 1931 Our Lord appeared to Sr. Faustina Kowalska in a vision and gave her the mission of spreading His message of Mercy to the whole world. Jesus said to her: Paint an image according to the pattern you see with the signature: `Jesus, I Trust in You -- `Jezu, Ufam Tobie. This Feast emerged from the very depths of My mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of My tender mercies (420 ) It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fountain of My mercy (600). On the first Sunday after Easter 2000, Blessed Pope John Paul II announced that Sister Faustina was to join the ranks of Saints. On that same day the Pope formally announced that the Sunday after Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday. We will celebrate The Feast of Mercy beginning with the Noon Mass on Sunday, April 12 th. It will be followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 3 p.m. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available from 2-3 p.m. with confessions being heard in English and Polish. The Chaplet of Divine mercy will be prayed in English, Polish and Tagalog at 3 p.m. and conclude with Benediction. All are invited to observe the end of the Octave of Easter with praise and thanks to God for His Divine Mercy. Booklets for the Divine Mercy Novena, which begins on Good Friday are available at the doors of the Church TODAY. Please join in praying this novena which our Lord also entrusted to St. Faustina.

Please start to collect or purchase new cosmetic samples, nail files or polish, small cosmetic bags, perfume samples, small combs or brushes, etc. Actual collection of the items will be after Easter. Let us share the joy of Mother's Day with the moms at Maternity BVM. EASTER VIGIL AGAPE Immediately following the Easter Vigil Mass there will be a reception in the Holy Family Room to which all are invited as we continue to celebrate our community s joy in the Risen Christ. If you would like to bring little sandwiches or sweets and/or help serve and clean up, please call the RE Office, 847/ , by Wednesday. We will appreciate your food donations and gift of time! CHICAGO GOOD FRIDAY WALK Lenten Fridays The green pepper and egg sandwiches are back this year on Fridays during Lent. They will be sold in the HFR from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. You can place orders in advance by calling John at Walk ins are also welcome. Donation: $4.00 each On Good Friday, April 3, the lay movement Communion and Liberation, with the blessing of the Archdiocese of Chicago, will lead the Way of the Cross around downtown Chicago. There will be stops along the way with meditations and choir music. All are invited to join them at 8:45 a.m. at Daley Plaza (Dearborn/Washington). They will then cross the River on Michigan Avenue Bridge and conclude at Holy Name Cathedral around Noon. They have schedule the procession to conclude so that it will not overlap with most parish services. It is a way to share the Lord s presence, love, and care, and that of the local faith community, with those who are unable to come to church by bringing them Holy Communion and/or praying and visiting with them. After the initial training period our parish Ministers of Care make visits either weekly or every other week. We meet as a group for formation and discussion two-three times a year and help with the Mass of the Anointing of the Sick twice a year (Fall and Spring). We would be happy to welcome new Ministers of Care! The next Ministry of Care Training will be on Wednesday evenings, April 8, 15, 22, 29, and May 6, 7-9 p.m. at Presence St. Benedict Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Hollbrook Hall, 6930 West Touhy Avenue in Niles. A sixth session will be held here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish, date to be determined.
