1 Parent Connection SWCS NEWS Dear SWCS Family, As we enter the month of Thanksgiving, we want to Thank You for blessing us with the opportunity to educate your child mind, body and soul at St. Wendelin Catholic School. When we all come together to educate our children, we will be one step closer to creating a world of good, ~Pope Francis on Catholic Education. October was a fun-filled month. We celebrated our patron, St. Wendelin, and took part in Eucharistic Adoration, Vespers, spirit week, parties, trunk or treat, and prepared for the musical, The Lion King, Jr. Thank you to our room mothers/fathers for all the festive decorations throughout the school and thank you to all those who volunteered to make these events successful! We also want to give a SHOUT OUT to students and coaches who participated in CYO volleyball and cross country this season! We are so proud of you and your accomplishments! Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to coach, help, and cheer! Student-athletes will be acknowledged on Friday, November 2nd during the assembly at 2:00 PM. CYO basketball will kick off in November. We are still in need of coaches for the 5th grade boy s team and the 4th grade girl s team. Please contact Shane Burnworth at shane.burnworth@stwendelin.org if you are willing to coach or have any questions. With the start of November, we prepare to meet with our families during Parent- Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, November 20th from 3:00-9:00 PM. We look forward to this time of the year. It gives the teachers an opportunity to touch base with the parents about their child(ren) s progress and continue to support the home/school relationship. We want to thank all of you for your prayers, support, and countless hours of volunteering and sharing of your talents to make our first quarter of school a success! We hope to see everyone at the debut of The Lion King, Jr. on November 2nd and 3rd, the Veteran s Day Celebration on November 12th, the Book Fair, Family Catechesis Night on November 14th, and at Mass! 4 DID YOU KNOW? Exploring Math Vocabulary Fourth grade students in Mrs. Flipse s class at St. Wendelin Catholic School explored math vocabulary while pairing up to create poster boards to share with the class. Family Group Bonding Students in grades K-8 meet in Family Groups of mixed ages each week and enjoy getting to know each other while growing in wisdom and grace. This year, groups are focusing on activities that help develop the mind, body and spirit. Students recently participated in a range of activities including liturgy/campus ministry planning, brainstorming stewardship projects and playing volleyball/ kickball together. Serving Others St. Wendelin Catholic School students in grades 6-8 visited the Fostoria Caring Hands Center on October 16th as part of a stewardship project. The students heard from center officials about how students and community members can volunteer their time at the center. Since October is Respect Life Month, students also learned how babies develop in the womb. Before leaving, the group folded donated clothes, sorted diapers and other supplies and helped to clean. The items will be given to struggling women and children who visit the center looking for help. Washing Germs Away Kindergartners recently learned about the importance of hand washing and the best way to keep germs from spreading. They had lots of fun practicing the correct techniques! Pancake & Pajama Day Kindergartners and first graders at St. Wendelin Catholic School celebrated the letter P by making pancakes while wearing their pajamas. They demonstrated their math skills by counting how many cups of mix and water to include in the recipe. In addition to eating their delicious creations, the group also watched Peppa Pig Pancakes and danced to a pancake party song. Operation Christmas Child SWCS students learned about the Operation Christmas Child project and how they can participate on October 29th. Family Groups 3 & 4 initiated the idea and helped to plan and introduce the project to the school. Students will be collecting items to fill shoeboxes to send to children around the world who may never have received a gift before! A special thank you to St. Wendelin parishioner, Gloria Miller, who has helped us to organize our project and spoke to students about her own experience with this charity. Even though it was pajama day for spirit week, SWCS students know that they are not called to comfort, but to greatness and generosity as disciples of Jesus! Women in STEM Young women at St. Wendelin Catholic School were exposed to many career paths in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) during a field trip to BGSU on October 30th. Women in STEM is part of a national effort to increase the number of women interested in these fields. Page 4 St. Wendelin Catholic School

5 GIRLY BAG BINGO NET RESULTS: $29,015 Thank you all for making the 2018 Girly Bag Bingo a huge success! PARISH NEWS Jesus By Candlelight Adoration: November 4th A Jesus by Candlelight adoration service will be held this Sunday, November 4th at 7:00 PM at St. Wendelin Catholic Church with special musical guest, Rachel Snyder. Fr. Chris Mileski will be present to offer reconciliation. All are welcome! National Vocations Awareness Week: November 4th-10th The Catholic Church in the United States celebrates National Vocation Awareness Week November 4th-10th. The purpose of this week is to pray that all young people will be open to God s plan in their lives. The celebration of National Vocations Awareness Week is a good reminder to continue to pray for an increase in vocations to the ordained ministry and consecrated life in the Diocese of Toledo. Jesus said: The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest (Luke 10:2). We offer prayers this week that God will call many young people in our parishes to labor with the Lord in serving the Church. Rite Of Christian Initiation Of Adults (RCIA) & Children It is never too late if you, or someone you know is guided by the Holy Spirit to take the journey into learning more about the Catholic faith. Please contact Shellie Gabel ( ; shellie.gabel@stwendelin.org) to schedule a visit and receive more information. Operation Christmas Child Collection: November 10th-11th Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes will be collected November 10-11th in the gathering space after all Masses. Please remember to make your donation of $9 per box to cover the cost of shipping. The best way to do this is online at samaritanspurse.org so boxes can also be tracked. Donations by check should be made payable to Samaritan s Purse with the number of boxes being sent indicated on the memo line. Payments can also be made by calling Thank you for your participation in this wonderful program! God bless you! Need a shoebox? Contact Shellie Gabel ( ). Contact Shellie Gabel at for more information. St. Wendelin Catholic School Page 5

6 SOURCE & SUMMIT LITURGY SERIES St. Wendelin Catholic Church is again offering a series titled, "Source & Summit," as an opportunity for an in-depth look at the Sacraments.
