His scheme begins with activities in Jerusalem (and near by), turns centrally on what happens from the new base of ntioch (both in Jerusalem and in Psidian ntioch) and ends in Rome. 3 Where signifies the presence of a lowerlevel abb formation (likewise also & ); where are parts in simple parallelism; where, and ICI are parts in chiasm (as 1,2,3...C...3,2,1 ); and where and abb are threepart progressions, where is introductory, is the first development and is the second and completing development (as also a, b and b ). There have been changes in the above charts since they first appeared in NTNT, published in Description of the Number of the Parts and Pieces of the cts of the postles: There is a case to be put for judging that the ook comprises 100 parts. Sections 1 and 1 : 6 each; Sections 2 and 2 : 7 each; Sections 3 and 3 : 9 each; Sections 4 and 4 : 7 each; Sections 5 and 5 : 5 each; and Section C: 32. ll the parts,,, and, are included in this summary only; those designated by abb are pieces. ut given that each part comprises 3 pieces, we might also describe the book as comprising 300 pieces in all. Fascinatingly, the 276 th piece of the ook, , is the one in which is satisfied the prediction of the 274 th piece, , that none on board the ship, of the fated sea voyage of the book, will lose their life. nd it is in the 275 th piece, , that the number of souls is given: it is two hundred and seventysix. Is this pure coincidence that there is a match between these numbers? efore I am mocked for even considering this, I would point out that it is in the 38 th piece of John s Gospel that the invalid by the Pool of ethesda is stated to have suffered 38 years; that it is in the sixth piece that six stone water jars are mentioned and that it is in the 83 rd piece that the figure of 153 appears (a triangular number like that of 276, as also of 666 in the central section of the Revelation), where simply 153 minus 83 equals 70, the number representative of the Gentiles. Clearly, it is the case that in all twentyseven ooks of the New Testament, because of parsing and rhetorical analysis, many new features surface, in terms of both structure and style, that have not been seen before. There should be no speedy rejection, therefore, of any possible correlation, as in this case in cts, as also in John, between the story line and the structure of a book. It is my view that in a number of New Testament ooks such a correlation does indeed exist and because it exists it confirms that such analyses are correct. The rhetors are to be understood for their endeavours in more ways than we previously ever imagined possible. The Purpose of the Writer of the cts of the postles: s I state in my opening chart: Luke s first book is the template for his second, in which he tells that the Life of Jesus is lived over again in the Life of the Church, a Life of Mission that the Spirit brings to birth, directs in the World and sustains through every kind of trial. When the two charts of Luke s Gospel and of cts are compared, correspondences of theme become apparent. Common details are also seen in the texts of corresponding sections (book to book) throughout the works. For example, common to the Central Sections are in the ears of (Lk. 9.44; c ), two Sabbaths, eternal life statements, shakings of the dust off feet, entry into the Kingdom, erchomeno (an uncommon expression, in Lk and cts 13.44, at the very heart of both books) and the Gentile Mission, prefigured in the Gospel s Central Section, but a reality in the Central Section of cts. In his opening of cts, the rhetor rewrites details of the ascension with which he concluded his Gospel. He sets the early days of the church against the backdrop of the Jewish Feast of Weeks. His motive here is more theological than historiographical. The rhetor s purpose, traditionally, may be judged to be historiographical, to tell how the church began life in Jerusalem but ended up in Rome, but this literary analysis restores the theological motive to the rhetor. nd this literary analysis, when compared with those of all the New Testament ooks, lends to the view, one I hold, that Luke (or his rhetor?) is the Literary rtist of all the writers.
