Your script should incorporate major achievements of the Islamic empire during the Golden Age ( ). Your script should include the answers to the following questions which can be found in the following readings from your Islam Achievements assignments and in Chapter 4, lesson What are pharmacies and why are they an important Islamic achievement? 2. Why was it important for the traders with in the Islamic Empire to be able to be able to write checks and have a banking system? 3. What were hospitals designed to do and why is this an important Islamic achievement? 4. Where did Muslims learn to make paper and why are books important for a vast empire? 5. How did Muslims keep water to maintain their crops? 6. What are anticeptics and sedatives and why are these important medicines? 7. On page 95 of your book. What is an astrolable? 8. How did the study of Astronomy and the creation of more accurate astolables encourage Muslims to explore the world? (page 95) I

How were townspeople different form Nomads? (page 56) I
3 You Are to Create a Script Telling The Story of Muhammad Use the Script we read in class and the textbook to answer the following questions 1-7. Then, write a script that outlines the answers. Step #1: Answer questions 1-7 on a separate piece of paper. 1. What is a prophet? 2. Who is the Angel Gabriel and why is he important? 3. Why did the people in Mecca want to assassinate Muhammad? 4. Why is Muhammad important to the Islamic Faith? 5. What is the Sunnah and why is it important for a practicing Muslim today (page 67)? 6. Which city does Muhammad flee in order to save his life? 7. How do Sunni and Shiite ( Shia) Muslims differ in their ideas of who should lead their empire (page 90)? I
4 You are to create a script that incorporates the Five Pillars of Islam. Use the class notes and textbook pages to answer questions 1-7. Then, create a script that includes all of the answers. You can have your script theme be a commercial, documentary or story. Your script should incorporate all five pillars of the Islamic faith. You should describe the pillar of faith and any action taken in each scene. Your script should answer the following questions within it 1. What are the five basic beliefs of the Islamic faith? (you can spread this through out many scenes) 2. What is Ramadan? 3. What is Mecca and where is it? 4. Who/what is allah? 5. What is the Sunnah and the Qu ran? 6. What is Shariah (page 69)? 7. What happens to a Muslim if he/she does not follow the five pillars of Islam? I
5 THE STORY OF MUHAMMAD 1. Prophet: messenger of God. 2. Angel Gabriel was an angel sent by Allah to tell Muhammad that he was the messenger of God. 3. The Quarish feared that their power and wealth would be lost if people stared following Muhammad. 4. Muhammad is a prophet and creator of the religion Islam. 5. The Sunna is a collection of things Muhammad did in his daily life. It gives Muslims a guideline to use in their own lives. 6. Muhammad flees to Medina. 7. Shiites Believe that only Muhammad's family should be rulers. 8. Sunni s- Accept good Muslim, elected officials as rulers Geography and Life in Arabia 1. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Yemen, Israel, Syria, Oman 2. Dry, hot desert region. 3. Trade routes connected Asia, Africa and even Europe on the peninsula. 4. They traded spices, silk and gold. 5. Hot, Many Camels, Nomadic, difficult, little water etc. 6. Nomads herders that migrate. Families made tribes, polytheistic, they believed in idols sons and daughter of god. There were many wars between tribes. 7. townspeople were sedentary (stayed in one place), Nomads traveled in caravan tribes from place to place. Five Pillars of Islam Allah is God, Muhammad is a prophet. 2. Pray 5 times a day. 3. Give alms to poor (zakat 2.5 % of savings), 4. Ramadan (fast on 9th month of lunar calendar). 5. Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca if you can afford it. 2. Ramadan= Fast 9th month of lunar calendar. 3. Mecca is the sacred birthplace of Muhammad located in Saudi Arabia. 4. Allah means God. 5. Sunna=A Book-Recorded daily life of Muhammad. Qur an= A Book-Word Allah as revealed to Muhammad. 6. Islamic law, based on interpretations of the Qur an and the Sunnah 7. They go against their beliefs and will be judged by Allah. THE GOLDEN AGE 1. Pharmacies A place to buy medicine. Important b/c that s why we have medicine available to us when we are sick today. 2. Banking systems and checks were important so you could trade with out carrying cash throughout a huge empire. 3. Hospitals were designed to house and take care of the sick. We also use this idea today. 4. They learned to make paper from the Chinese. They could spread the word on paper like news and religious books. 5. Under ground wells kept water so it would not evaporate. They also had dams, reservoirs and aqueducts. They also perfected the first water wheel. 6. Sedatives soothe patients lesson nervousness. Antiseptics prevent infection. Make surgical procedures less painful and more less prone to infection. 7. A chart to position the stars 8. They had better maps and distance calculations
