2 Origin of Islam's birthplace Began in Mecca in the 7th century about 45 miles inland from present day Jeddah in Saudi Arabia Founded by the prophet Muhammad Youngest major religion Islam means submission, submit to god Those who submit will live in paradise but those who didn t would burn in a fiery hell 2

3 Muhammad s Life at a young age 570 C.E. Muhammad is born in Mecca Came from a noble family Part of the Quraysh tribe. Born by his father, Adullah, who passed away a year before his birth, and Amina, and his mother, who passed away 6 years after his birth. So he was orphaned at young age Two years later his new parents died At the age of eight he was left in the care of his paternal uncle Abu Talib 3

4 Muhammad s Life at C.E He prayed at the Cave of Hira At 40 Angel Jebreel (Gabriel) was said to have appeared to Muhammad He was told he was the, "Prophet of Allah" Married Khadija for 25 years until her death He remarried after His wives are known as the, "Mothers of the Believers" 4

5 The religion after his death In 633 C.E, Muhammad dies in Mecca and his father-in-law takes the throne. The Quran is later written down and shared to many people. After his death, the Islam people just put together Muhammad s notes, later creating the Quran. 5

8 The Quran s five pillars Shahadah - Declaring the creed There is no god but God, and Muhammad is his prophet. Salah - Praying five times daily while facing Mecca (the birthplace of the Islamic religion) Sawm - Fasting every day during the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the lunar year. Zakat - Giving alms (money and food) to the poor, especially to widows and orphans. Hajj - a pilgrimage to Mecca, if one can afford it physically, financially and safely. The pilgrim is about 6 miles (10 km) from Mecca, he or she enters the state of holiness and purity known as ihram and dons the ihram garments 8

13 Sunni Arabic for "one who follows the traditions of the Prophet" Believed that Muhammad's true successor was his father-in-law, Abu Kakr They recognize the six sound books of Hadith They numbered about 900 million in the early 21st century i It`s the largest branch of Islam 13

14 Shia Arabic for "a group or supportive party of people" Believed that true successor was his cousin and his son-in-law Second largest branch of Islam They do not recognize the authority of elected Muslim leaders They instead follow a line of Imams which they believe have been appointed by the Prophet Muhammad 14

15 Islamic religion in the 21 st century Countries such as Iran have adopted an Islamic democracy They vote for their leaders Only follows the old Quran It is followed by more than 1 billion people today and the fastest growing religion and soon the largest. Only follows the old bible, no one will follow the modified ones. 15

16 It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces towards East or West; but it is righteousness- to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for Primary Source your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfill the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing.

17 The Messenger believeth in what hath been revealed to him from his Lord, as do the men of faith. Each one (of them) believeth in Allah, His angels, Primary Source His books, and His apostles. We make no distinction (they say) between one and another of His apostles. And they say: We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and the Scripture which He hath sent to His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denieth Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messenger., and the Day of Judgment, hath gone far, far astray.
