3 FROM FATHER JOHN: After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands... [One of the elders] said to me, These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb (Revelation 7:9,14). We celebrated the Solemnity of All Saints this past Friday. I thought that this would be a good time to discuss the doctrine of the Communion of Saints. As Catholics, we believe that there is a communion between all the saints whether here on earth, in purgatory or in the heavenly kingdom and, as a communion, we share both in holy things and in holy persons. The Catechism of the Catholic puts it this way, Since all the faithful form one body, the good of each is communicated to the others.... We must therefore believe that there exists a communion of goods in the. But the most important member is Christ, since he is the head.... Therefore, the riches of Christ are communicated to all the members, through the sacraments. As this is governed by one and the same Spirit, all the goods she has received necessarily become a common fund The term communion of saints therefore has two closely linked meanings: communion in holy things (sancta) and among holy persons (sancti). (CCC #947/948) The communion in holy things means that we share in faith, in the sacraments, in the various charisms of the, in charity, etc. A charism is described in this way; Within the communion of the, the Holy Spirit distributes special graces among the faithful of every rank for the building up of the.484 Now, to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (CCC #951) What charism essentially means is that people are, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, given a good work to accomplish for the common good of the People of God and are also given by God all the grace they need to accomplish such a work. The Catholic Encyclopedia has a good definition of how we share in the communion of holy persons. The communion of saints is the spiritual solidarity which binds together the faithful on earth, the souls in purgatory, and the saints in heaven in the organic unity of the same mystical body under Christ its head, and in a constant interchange of supernatural offices. The participants in that solidarity are called saints by reason of their destination and of their partaking of the fruits of the Redemption (1 Corinthians 1:2 Greek Text). The damned are thus excluded from the communion of saints. The living, even if they do not belong to the body of the true, share in it according to the measure of their union with Christ and with the soul of the the angels, though not redeemed, enter the communion of saints because they come under Christ's power and receive of His gratia capitis. So, what does all this mean? How are we to understand what the church teaches concerning the Communion of Saints? One thing that we have to recognize is that God exists outside of space and time. In fact, God created space and time. Space and time are actually creatures meaning that they were created by God when He created the universe out of nothing (creation ex nihilo). What we can take from the fact that within the Communion of Saints there is a communion of holy persons is that somehow we are all connected in a communion across space and time. The faithful on earth, the departed souls in purgatory and the saints in heaven are united in the Mystical Body of Christ with Christ as the Head and Shepherd of His. I like to think of it this way. The love that we share with one another, with family, with friends does not cease to exist when someone passes from this life to the next. Rather, the love remains because God graced us with this love, has shared His great love with us and, through the grace of God, we are still in a communion of love that connects us to all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. We are connected in the Mystical Body of Christ and share in both holy things and holy people. It s important that we remember that we share in both of these things. By sharing in holy people we remain connected to one another in love across space and time. By sharing in holy things, every pious and holy action done by one belongs and is profitable to all, through charity which seeketh not her own. (Catechism of the Council of Trent. Part. I, Ch. X) This means that every time we pray, every time we go to mass, every time we receive one of the sacraments, every time we read sacred scripture, every time we complete an act of mercy, every time we share our love with another person, etc. the benefit of this pious and holy action redounds to all people not just ourselves and not just to the people who immediately surround us. The doctrine of the Communion of Saints is a beautiful and profound teaching of the that expresses God s great love for us but is one that, unfortunately, we often forget to contemplate as we practice our faith.

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School News Always Growing: St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School students are always growing: in faith, in academic knowledge, in athletics, and in fine arts. As they learn more about the Saints this year, the children are growing in the practices of the Faith; we hope you will see more and more of them with their families at Sunday Mass. Our achievement exam scores increased significantly this year in reading, and even more so in math, an objective measure of great academic growth. Our volleyball teams have won first place in four tournaments, and our baseball team won first place, Division 1A in the state: all are admirable accomplishments. Our band has tripled in size, and our drama club has grown from producing short skits to producing a 45 minute junior high play version of The Wizard of Oz. Save the date: there will be two performances of the play on November 15 th, at 2:00 pm and at 7:00 pm in our gym. All are welcome to our first ever full length drama production of this classic story. Find out if monkeys really do fly! PRAY FOR OUR MILITARY Women Speak Out LIFE [The abortion] gave me grief and sorrow beyond expression. I have committed the most heinous of all crimes -- I killed my own child. Yet, the Lord forgave me, just as he forgave Paul. Yet I will always regret what I did and will probably always feel grief. But I pray that my experience can somehow prevent other women from making the same fatal mistake. I m a nurse now, so I wear my uniform to all the pro-life things I do! For information on healing after abortion, see TO ALL PARISHIONERS PLEASE NOTE THAT BEGINNING JAN. 1, 2014 YOUR OFFERING ENVELOPES WILL BE MAILED TO YOU ON A BI-MONTHLY SCHED- ULE, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE CONTACT LYNNE AT THE RECTORY ext 200

TUITION ANGELS Each year help is given in these situations by our parish through thousands of dollars of financial aid given to needy families; help is also given by the Marconi Scholarship to families who have encountered financial strain due to medical issues. Now there is another avenue of help: the Tuition Angels fund. People can become tuition angels by donating money to help either specific families or simply to fortify the general fund which will then portion out assistance according to need. At this time of year families who are able reach out to those who are unable and your generosity is remembered always. What better gift than to allow a child to continue their education, based in faith and filled with care. Thank you for your consideration and participation in this worthy endeavor. May God bless you and yours Show, by your life, that it is worth giving your time and talents in order to attain high ideals, it is worth recognizing the dignity of each human person, and it is worth taking risks for Christ and his Gospel.
