3 Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 11, 2012 The Year of Faith Several of the documents of Vatican II do not deal with issues relevant to the as a whole, but instead focus on very specialized issues that the average Catholic probably does not find very relevant. While every Catholic can find something important in the document on the liturgy or on the in the modern world, today s document is not so broadly appealing. The Decree on Catholic es of the Eastern Rite deals with a reality that most Roman Catholics aren t even aware of: the fact that they belong to the Latin Rite while there are other Catholics in union with the pope that live a very different liturgical tradition, rooted in what was in ancient times the eastern half of the Roman Empire. In the early the Faith took root in five great cities of the ancient world. Each of those cities had its own liturgical tradition which profoundly shaped how it lived the Faith. Numerically, most Catholics in the world today have inherited the ancient tradition of Rome, but there are also other roots of the Faith descended from Byzantium, Antioch, or Alexandria, for instance. These are collectively referred to as the Eastern es. Many of those ancient traditions broke away from the pope centuries ago to form the Orthodox es, and yet it might surprise the average Roman Catholic to know that for each Orthodox, there is a Catholic counterpart in union with the pope. For example, the Catholic version of the Greek Orthodox is the Byzantine Catholic. (By the way, there is one such church nearby: Annunciation Byzantine Catholic in Homer Glen.) Vatican II made the point that the Eastern Catholic es enjoy full equality with the Roman dioceses. While numerically much smaller, Eastern Catholics possess an ancient patrimony of faith which must be preserved and treasured. For this reason, they possess the right to govern themselves under the authority of the pope. This autonomy is meant to ensure that the integrity of their traditions and liturgy will be preserved in harmony with the ancient root of each rite. History, tradition and abundant ecclesiastical institutions bear outstanding witness to the great merit owing to the Eastern es by the universal The es of the East, as much as those of the West, have a full right and are in duty bound to rule themselves, each in accordance with its own established disciplines, since all these are praiseworthy by reason of their venerable antiquity, more harmonious with the character of their faithful and more suited to the promotion of the good of souls. As a young seminarian, one of the most profound experiences I had of the great antiquity and diversity of the was to take part in the Divine Liturgy in the Maronite Catholic (which is rooted in the Middle East and whose liturgy is celebrated in Arabic). At some point every Roman Catholic should experience the Eastern Catholic es since, as it has been famously put, the can only fully breathe with both lungs, East and West. Fr. Gregory

Thanksgiving Can Food Drive Weekend November at all Masses CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE Beginning Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, two Christmas Trees will be in the Narthex of the church. The trees, as well as the tables at the four side doors, will be filled with Christmas cards denoting gifts that will be given to those whose Christmas would be without gifts. Upon each card there will be printed a item that you may purchase (only new items please). Starting Saturday, November 24 through Sunday, December 9, you may place your gift(s) in any one of the 6 Christmas wrapped containers near the trees or the small tables at the side doors.
