3 FROM FATHER JOHN: "I am often asked, especially by young people, why I became a priest. Maybe some of you would like to ask the same question. Let me try briefly to reply. I must begin by saying that it is impossible to explain entirely. For it remains a mystery, even to myself. How does one explain the ways of God? Yet, I know that, at a certain point in my life, I became convinced that Christ was saying to me what he had said to thousands before me: 'Come, follow me!' There was a clear sense that what I heard in my heart was no human voice, nor was it just an idea of my own. Christ was calling me to serve him as a priest. And you can probably tell that I am deeply grateful to God for my vocation to the priesthood. Nothing means more to me or gives me greater joy that to celebrate Mass each day and to serve God's people in the. That has been true ever since the day of my ordination as a priest. Nothing has ever changed this, not even becoming Pope." (St. Pope John Paul II, Los Angeles, September 14, 1987) An article by Fr. Burke Masters was printed in the last two issues of our Sunday bulletin. Fr. Burke is the Vocation Director for the Diocese of Joliet. His article was about a new vocations program that our diocese is starting called Who will fill my shoes. The Catholic in the United States is facing a shortage of priests while other parts of the world have an abundance of men entering the seminary to study for the priesthood. You have probably heard about the shortage of priests in our country over the past few years but I wanted to give you some information about the situation in our own diocese that you may not be aware of. The Diocese of Joliet has approximately one hundred and twenty parishes and approximately one hundred and twenty active diocesan priests. Some priests are pastors of two or three or even four smaller parishes in order for the diocese to be able to assign a pastor or an associate pastor to a larger parish that may have a school. The optional retirement age for a priest is seventy years old. The mandatory retirement age for a priest is seventy-five years old. Over the course of the next ten years, fifty to sixty of the active priests in our diocese will reach the age of seventy and will be able to retire. We are expecting six priests to retire this year. According to the Official Catholic Directory, the parishes in the cities of Joliet, Crest Hill and Rockdale had 16 diocesan priests assigned to them in Today, there are 11 diocesan priests assigned to the parishes in these cities. We expect that there will only be 10 diocesan priests assigned here beginning in June of We are fortunate that the Carmelites staff St. Joseph s and Mt. Carmel in Joliet, that the Franciscans staff St. John the Baptist and that the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter staff St. Joseph s in Rockdale. But, things do not need to remain the same; vocations can increase in our diocese. That is why we pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life at mass each and every Sunday during the Prayers of the Faithful. The following is an article that Fr. Burke wrote discussing one of the obstacles that the faces in fostering vocations to the priesthood. Why do some studies today show that parents are the top obstacle to religious vocations today? First of all, families are smaller. Parents want to have grandchildren and they want the family name to continue. And if they only have a few children they are less likely to encourage their children to consider a celibate vocation. It used to be when families were much larger, parents would encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life more readily because they had other children that would provide grandchildren. I have had parents tell me that they do not want their children to be a priest, brother or sister. I always respond to by saying, What do you want for your children? They inevitably tell me, I want my kids to be happy. My next question is, How do your children find happiness by doing your will or the will of God? If God is calling your child to be a priest, sister or brother, God will give them the grace to live this life and to find great joy in it. My father asked me before entering the seminary, Son, are you sure you can be happy as a priest? I asked my Dad, How did you know Mom was the right one for you? He said, as most married people say, I don t know, but when I met your Mother I knew she was the one. I said, Dad, I feel the same way. I don t know why God is calling me and I don t know where He is leading me, but I feel this is what I was created to do. My Dad understood and has supported me ever since. Parents, please encourage your children to follow the will of God in their lives. Just as you encourage them to be teachers, doctors, etc., give them the option of following Jesus in a religious vocation. If they determine that God is calling them to be a priest, sister or brother, they are going to find true peace and joy in that vocation. Fr. Burke was not raised as a Catholic. He joined the Catholic when he was baptized and confirmed as a Catholic during high school. I think it was probably much harder for Fr. Burke s dad, a non-catholic, to accept Fr. Burke s decision to become a priest than it was for my parents, who are Catholic, to accept my decision. But, he accepted it because he realized that his son could only find true joy in the priesthood. It is incumbent upon each of us, priests, religious and laity alike, to foster vocations whenever and wherever we can. We need to encourage young men and older men to seriously discern the call to priesthood if they have any inclination that God may be calling them to the priesthood. The one thing I can assure you of is that I have found happiness, joy, peace and fulfillment in the priesthood. Fr. Burke has found happiness in the priesthood; Fr. Lennon has certainly found happiness in the priesthood as has Fr. Belmonte. Being a priest is a wonderful life that brings great joy to all those men who are called to a priestly life of service to God and His Holy People. If someone you know is truly being called to the priesthood, I urge you to support and encourage him in his vocation for the simple reason that priesthood is the only life that will give him true happiness, joy, peace and fulfillment. It is the only life that will give him what you really wish him to have so please support him in his vocation in order to help him find the joy that God intends him to have.
