3 Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time March 6, 2011 Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to give me safety. You are my rock and my fortress; for your name s sake you will lead and guide me. Psalm 31:3-4 God s Love Prevails I f you were blessed with the opportunity to get to Mass here at St. Paul s on Presidents Day, you heard a thought-provoking homily. It has had me thinking ever since about the constancy of the truths of the faith despite the cyclical nature of high and low times in the history of the over the centuries. No matter how far we may stray, the Truth will not be denied, and God s love will prevail. As Father Greg talked about the good and bad times in history, I could not help thinking of the parallels to various phases in my own life. There were high points: in childhood when I received my First Communion, and when I was confirmed; in adolescence when I enjoyed large religious rallies in high school and college; in young adulthood when we prepared for the Baptism of our first child; in later years when we attended an occasional religious retreat; certainly in the present as I have the opportunity to literally immerse myself in a school and parish culture that encourages personal faith growth. However, in between those high points were low points when I drifted away from that sense of closeness to God: times of greater interest in academics, sports, or music than in spiritual life as a student; times of emphasis on the daily work of cooking, cleaning, laundering and caring for four small children as a young mother; times when the challenges of single parenthood forced me to focus more on working long hours and supporting a family of five than on finding time for more than a few fleeting moments of prayer during the day. I remember thinking I would give anything for a few minutes of contemplative solitude when I was the sole adult responsible 24/7 for the family. How much I enjoyed my half-hour commute twice a day to grad school courses 30 miles from home! The solitude was an answer to years of prayer. They say you should be careful what you ask for: these days, I could do with a little less solitude. In any case, through all the ups and downs, I have always felt that God is there. At times when He seemed more distant, I was well aware that He was not the one who had moved. He always calls us back when we drift away, and always loves us with a truth so constant that we can live secure in His presence, no matter the circumstances of our lives. What a precious gift it is to have that awareness, that knowledge! What a privilege it is to share that faith with our school children and their families. As always, thank you all for supporting our school as we strive to provide a safe and secure learning environment based on very constant Catholic truths and ideals. 4 Parish News Notes from REP This weekend, the Reid family carried the Offertory gifts at the 4:30pm Mass, the Cantu Family at 9am and the Wendel family at 10:30am. Next weekend, March 12-13, the Toborg family will carry the Offertory gifts at 4:30, the Offerman family at 9 am and the Cullotta family at 10:30. There will be no REP classes on Monday, March 7, due to the Pulaski Day holiday. Regular REP classes will resume on Monday, March 14. 6 LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent (excluding the Solemnity of the Annunciation. Canon 1251). 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy. Promises made to a boss, a spouse or a friend ring hollow when the action that follows does not bear them out. God is the last person we should try to fool with empty words; he knows what is in our hearts. When we profess love for God, we must also act in loving ways. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Collection for the in Central and Eastern Europe will be taken up soon in our diocese. This Collection supports essential unmet pastoral needs in Central and Eastern Europe and areas of Asia formerly under Soviet control. Our assistance is vital to the growth and strength of the in these regions. The Collection funds scholarships given to the region s students for graduate education. One such former student is Fr. Yurko Kolasa, who was raised in the Soviet Union. Fr. Kolasa is now a prefect of the training program for priests, seminarians, and religious at the International Theological Institute near Vienna, Austria, and he is also the developer of a marriage preparation program that has had an impact on the success rate of marriage in Ukraine. Fr. Kolasa s marriage preparation program has been so successful that it is being used as a model for the Romanian Greek Catholic and throughout Austria. The pastoral projects and scholarships supported by the Collection build the capacity of the in Central and Eastern Europe by creating leaders and developing programs that will continue to encourage self-sufficiency.
