Participation in a Parent Preparation Program is mandatory before the baptism of the child. Our preparation Program is held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM. Attendance at Sunday Mass on the day of the Baptism is Mandatory. Please call the Parish office to schedule a baptism. WEDDINGS All weddings are scheduled by the Pastor of the Parish. Office staff cannot schedule a wedding and a wedding is not considered to be officially scheduled until the couple receives written confirmation from the Pastor of the Parish. Couples desiring to be married need to speak directly with the Pastor BEFORE reserving a hall. Only the Bride or Groom may request a date for their wedding. Diocesan policy requires that a 6 month (minimum) preparation process be completed prior to the celebration of all weddings. Weddings are not scheduled on Sundays. ANOINTING OF THE SICK Parishioners who are seriously or critically ill, or have surgery scheduled should receive the Sacrament of Anointing and Healing. Please call the parish office to request this sacrament. Regular visits are also made by our Pastoral Staff and Ministers of Care to bring Holy Communion to hospitalized or homebound parishioners. Anyone desiring such a visit should call the Parish Office. R.C.I.A. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is an ongoing formation process for adults who are interested in becoming a Catholic and adult Catholics who would like to receive the sacraments of Confirmation and/or First Eucharist. 3 FROM FATHER JOHN: It is God who gives life. Let us respect and love human life, especially vulnerable life in a mother s womb (Pope Francis, May 15, 2013) All life has inestimable value even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God s creation, made in his own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect. (Pope Francis, July 28, 2013) Let s say Yes to life and No to death. (Pope Francis, Jan. 19, 2014) October is Respect Life Month. The opposes abortion, the death penalty, euthanasia, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, war, poverty and anything else that attacks the dignity and sanctity of all human life from natural conception to natural death. Although the opposes abortion, the also embraces with mercy those who have made this mistake and offers to bring them absolution and forgiveness. In the words of St. Pope John Paul II: I would now like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion. The is aware of the many factors which may have influenced your decision, and she does not doubt that in many cases it was a painful and even shattering decision. The wound in your heart may not yet have healed. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to understand what happened and face it honestly. If you have not already done so, give yourselves over with humility and trust to repentance. The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. To the same Father and to his mercy you can with sure hope entrust your child. (The Gospel of Life, #99). I believe that abortion is an act of desperation; that, unfortunately, people sometimes find themselves in a difficult and desperate situation where there seems to be no good solution. This is why The Father of mercies offers, through the auspices of the, forgiveness, absolution and mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. But, at the same time, the reality of the situation in our nation is that over 50 million innocent human lives have been taken since 1973, the year abortion was legalized in the United States by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade. Roughly 3,300 innocent human lives are lost to abortion per day in the United States which has helped create a situation where human life has been cheapened in what St. Pope John Paul II called a culture of death. 16-year-old Dolores Weber commented in the Chicago Tribune that, A third of my generation is gone when referring to abortions. (The Chicago Tribune, Abortion opponents march to mark Roe vs. Wade anniversary, January 2009) How sad is that, when a 16- year-old realizes that one-third of her generation was never given a chance, to live, to dream, or to love? One long term issue that our country (and many other countries) faces in the coming decades is the speed in which fertility rates are decreasing in the United States. there was an interesting article entitled America s One-Child Policy in The Weekly Standard (September 27, 2010) that discussed the nature of this problem in detail and how it may greatly decrease our nation s prosperity in future years. The case is made in this article that no nation has ever increased in prosperity with a declining fertility rate and that, in fact, the opposite is likely to occur. Today there are 26.6 million legal immigrants living in America. We need these workers to prop up the entitlement programs we re no longer having enough babies to fund. In order to keep Social Security and Medicare running, we need a stable ratio of workers to retirees. If we were to keep the ratio at the present level of three workers for every retiree already lower than it has ever been America would need to add 44.9 million new immigrants between 2025 and If we wanted to keep the ratio at 5.2 workers for every retiree about what it was in 1960, before the collapse of our fertility rate we d need to import 10.8 million immigrants every year until At which point the United States would have 1.1 billion people, 73 percent of whom would be the descendants of recent immigrants it would be logistically impossible to add 10.8 million immigrants a year. As demographer Phillip Longman notes, such a flow would require the equivalent of building another New York City every ten months or so. The article analyzes the many causes of our low fertility rate. One of the significant causes of the low fertility rate has been abortion. In 1973 the year of the Roe decision there were 3.1 million babies born. Over the next 10 years that number rose only slightly, despite the fact that America s total population was increasing quickly. Why weren t there more babies born in the decade following Roe? Because during that time, 13.6 million were aborted meaning that 28.5 percent of all pregnancies ended in abortion. Since Roe more than 49.5 million babies have been aborted in the United States, and the fertility rate has varied inversely to the abortion rate, generally declining when abortion is on the rise and rising when abortion is on the decline. It is important that as disciples of Jesus Christ and as faithful citizens who love our country that we boldly proclaim to the world our opposition to anything that cheapens human life and/or attacks the sanctity of human life in any way. It is important on both a moral and practical level. On a moral level, we must oppose anything that attacks the sanctity of human life that has been created by God, in the image and likeness of God. On a practical level, abortion has done immense damage to our nation and our society. Its contribution to the decline in our nation s fertility rate is just one example of how abortion and the other aspects of the culture of death are causing great harm to our nation, our culture and our society. I pray that every member of our parish, from the young to the old, will boldly proclaim, in word and action, the Gospel of Life that comes from the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7 WHO WILL FILL THESE SHOES? CONCLUSION Inspired by this story and encouraged by the response it generated in promoting vocations, both the Diocese of Joliet and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee will host a similar event this year, with the hope of offering it as a national vocation promotion program the following year. The Diocese of Joliet will follow the same pattern implemented by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Just before National Vocation Awareness Week, a recorded homily by recently retired Fr. Tony Taschetta will be played in each parish across the diocese the weekend of October 25-26, inviting young men ages 16 to 40 and their parish priests to the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet on Friday, November 28, 2014 from 11:00am until 3:00pm. The day will include Mass, talks from priests and seminarians, lunch and time to answer any questions about the priesthood. Parents are welcome to accompany their sons on November 28 th. Parents of our current seminarians will be available to speak about what it is like to have a son answer God s call. In promoting priestly vocations, our efforts in the Diocese of Joliet for the year will be guided by the theme Who Will Fill These Shoes? This theme will be featured on our seminarian poster and other promotional materials. As I have shared this idea with our Vocation Team, priests, seminarians and others, everyone is impacted by the story. The needs priests and we hope that our efforts this year will inspire many more young men to respond generously to God s call. I firmly believe that God has not stopped calling; we have stopped listening. Last fall at our priest convocation, Fr. Bill Dewan, our Vicar for Clergy, reported that we can expect the number of our priests to shrink by about 20 over the next ten years. Many of our parishes have already felt, or will soon experience, the shortage of priests. The good news, however, is that the number of our seminarians continues to increase. This year we have 37 seminarians studying for the priesthood and numerous other young men actively discerning a vocation. The future of the is filled with much hope! What can you do? Please continue to pray for vocations and especially for the young men that God is calling to the priesthood. Also, invite young men personally to attend this event and to consider priesthood. You can also suggest names of young men to your pastor to attend this event. Your prayers, support, and encouragement is very important in promoting vocations. And to young men who are considering the priesthood, I ask you to pray about the call God has placed on your heart and answer Him with courage and generosity Who Will Fill These Shoes?
