3 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 26, 2010 Woe to the complacent. Their wanton revelry shall be done away with. Amos 6:1a, 4-7 The New Mass One of the most central teachings concerning the Mass is that it makes present again the sacrifice of the Cross in an unbloody manner. Holy Mass is not just the prayer of the ; it is also the offering of Christ himself to the Father by which all the merits and grace of the Cross are made present anew in our own day. As the teaches, The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice: the victim is one and the same...only the manner of offering is different. This doctrine of sacrifice is profoundly present in the imagery of the Roman Canon. After the words of consecration, the prayer offers up to the Father, this pure victim, this holy victim, this spotless victim, the holy Bread of eternal life and the Chalice of everlasting salvation. This is precisely where the Catholic view of Mass differs greatly from that of Protestants who deny that the liturgy could possibly contain the actual sacrifice of Christ. For them it is a time of community prayer and praise, but certainly not the offering up of Christ himself to the Father as a sacrificial victim. The prayer then continues by remembering the great sacrificial offerings of the Old Covenant, drawing a line of continuity between those imperfect offerings and the perfect sacrifice of Christ. Be pleased to look upon them with serene and kindly countenance, and to accept them, as you were pleased to accept the gifts of your servant Abel the just, the sacrifice of Abraham, our father in faith, and the offering of your high priest Melchizedek, a holy sacrifice, a spotless victim. The Letter to the Hebrews makes much of the idea that all the ancient sacrifices of the Old Testament were a sort of preparation and foreshadowing of what Christ would accomplish on the Cross; here we see that idea enshrined in the Mass itself. Finally the prayer shows how this sacrifice offered here on earth joins us mystically to the eternal liturgy that is celebrated forever in heaven. This is why the teaches that Holy Mass is the beginning of heaven here on earth. In humble prayer we ask you, almighty God: command that these gifts be borne by the hands of your holy Angel to your altar on high in the sight of your divine majesty, so that all of us who through this participation at the altar receive the most holy Body and Blood of your Son may be filled with every grace and heavenly blessing. The Roman Canon shows how Holy Mass connects us in a very real way to the great events of our redemption. The Eucharist connects us to the sacrifice of the Cross and allows us to partake in the merits of our Lord's suffering and death. It also connects us to the great ancient sacrifices of the people of Israel as well as connecting us to the eternal sacrifice which is offered before the throne of God for all eternity. Far more than a time of community worship, Holy Mass is the act by which creation offers up to God the Father the perfect sacrifice of his only begotten Son. Fr. Gregory By supporting St. Paul the Apostle in the Christ is our Hope Magazine Collection, you will enable us to evangelize our Parish, our diocese, and the nation. 4 Parish News Even though death, divorce or loss appears to be only grown-up problems, they have a profound effect on the children touched by this experience. Children can find it extremely difficult to verbalize their feelings. The Rainbows Program is for children in Grades K 8 who are dealing with grief due to experiencing a loss due to divorce or the death of a parent, close relative or friend. Participants are involved in weekly meetings structured in such a way the children s stories can be shared in a loving and accepting environment. The obvious goal is healthy resolution and healing of the loss experience. The Fall Session of Rainbows begins October 6 and will meet for 6 Wednesdays, 6:30 7:30 PM in the school. Call Sr. Karen ( ) for more info. or to register. St. Paul s FOLLOW Youth Ministry Are you confirmed and interested in our program? Pictorial Directory pictures are being taken. Last two days, this Monday & Tuesday The women of the Ladies Auxiliary would like to say thank you for all of your support this year. Your generosity never ceases to amaze us! The final numbers are in for a couple of things that you have helped us with this year. Once again you helped us to raise close to $3000 in our Change for Life campaign. You have greatly impacted numerous women and children in this area in ways that you cannot imagine. We "Thank you" on behalf of those who have benefited from your donations. Secondly, the count is in for the school supplies drive to which you donated so overwhelmingly. We collected over 340 bottles of glue, over 40 glue sticks, and numerous pens, pencils, folders etc. Again, on behalf of the children who were able to start the school year well- supplied, we thank you. Finally, if you were not able to help with either of these efforts, the "Undy Sunday" drive is just around the corner. This is a project sponsored by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Joliet to help supply those with the most basic of essentials. Please consider donating new underwear and socks for adults, teens, and children. All sizes are needed, including men's XL and XXL. Children's pajamas and diapers are also needed. The collection will take place the weekend of October 9th and 10th. There will be laundry baskets at all of the entrances of church. Please place your donations in one of these baskets. Thanks in advance for your help once again!!

What a contrast between the approach of our first reading, where the complacent are condemned, and our second reading, where Timothy is encouraged to be a man of God! The message is similar, though. We are challenged to live our lives with the future in mind. For us, that means a God centered life, the life of Stewardship. For our complacency, let us ask forgiveness.
