3 Fourth Sunday of Easter April 25, 2010 I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth. Acts 13:47b Dear Brothers and Sisters, During this Easter Season, as we continue to celebrate the Risen Christ, I would like to discuss one of the key teachings of our Lord that many fail to follow, that is, loving one another. A disciple is one who loves the brethren. With a love patterned after the love of Jesus ( as I have loved you ). With a love that is visible to the world ( by this all will know ). Therefore, a true disciple would...make every effort to get to know his brethren. They would take advantage of occasions to encourage and grow closer to them (example attending Mass and the Eucharist). Several warnings, the golden rule, and the parable of the wise and foolish builders are presented in the section of the Bible around the Sermon on the Mount. This corresponds well to loving our brethren. The Golden Rule in everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye, and behold, the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. As we look at the Golden Rule and loving each other, Jesus commands us to not only love those who love you, but to love your enemies as well. Jesus teaching regarding love for enemies represents something new in Christianity, an improvement over Judaism s demand for justice by substituting mercy for it. Only members of the Christian religion are required to love their enemies. Let s look at a few reasons why we should love our enemies first of all God commands us to love. A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another John. But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you Luke. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse Romans. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it 1 Corinthians. Quite a few examples don t you think it s important? But we know it is very hard to love your enemies sometimes, so here are some helpful hints: Jesus loved His enemies. Make Him your example. See problems as opportunities to grow in Christ. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope Romans. Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds James. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong 2 Corinthians. Forgive, even if your enemy does not apologize. Follow Jesus example: Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing Luke. Pray for your enemies. When you feel irritated about someone: Pray for the other person's needs. Pray that God will help you forgive. Pray that God will help you love him or her. Always remember that our Lord and Savior came not to be served, but to serve. It is clear that Jesus calls each and every one of us to pour out ourselves for others, thus living a life of service. People tend to seek happiness in wrong places, for if we truly want joy in our lives, we will put Jesus first, Others second and Yourself third. Just as Mother Teresa saw the face of Christ in every person she met, we too need to start living what she practiced. It is then that we will truly be able to follow Christ completely, loving not only those who love us, but our enemies as well. In Christ, Jeremy Hylka LENT 2010 ALMSGIVING DONATIONS The generosity of St. Paul's people, once again, was outstanding! This year there were four Sunday's in which you were asked to share your donations with GROUNDWORK, BIRTHRIGHT. DAYBREAK, and the WILL-GRUNDY MEDI- CAL CENTER. The total amount collected over the four weeks: $2, Also, the Albert Feinstein Foundation matched the DAYBREAK collection with a donation of $ Therefore, the total of monies donated came to $2, THANK YOU!!!
