(#2181) Saturday: SACRAMENT OF PENANCE 8:30-9:30 am or by appointment BAPTISMS Baptisms are scheduled on the Second Sunday of the month at 11:30 AM based on parental requests. Participation in a Parent Preparation Program is mandatory before the baptism of the child. Our preparation Program is held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM. Attendance at Sunday Mass on the day of the Baptism is Mandatory. Please call the Parish office to schedule a baptism. WEDDINGS All weddings are scheduled by the Pastor of the Parish. Office staff cannot schedule a wedding and a wedding is not considered to be officially scheduled until the couple receives written confirmation from the Pastor of the Parish. Couples desiring to be married need to speak directly with the Pastor BEFORE reserving a hall. Only the Bride or Groom may request a date for their wedding. Diocesan policy requires that a 6 month (minimum) preparation process be completed prior to the celebration of all weddings. Weddings are not scheduled on Sundays. R.C.I.A. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is an ongoing formation process for adults who are interested in becoming a Catholic and adult Catholics who would like to receive the sacraments of Confirmation and/or First Eucharist. Please call the Parish Office for additional information. ANOINTING OF THE SICK Parishioners who are seriously or critically ill, or have surgery scheduled should receive the Sacrament of Anointing and Healing. Please call the parish office to request this sacrament. Regular visits are also made by our Pastoral Staff and Ministers of Care to bring Holy Communion to hospitalized or homebound parishioners. 2 FROM FATHER JOHN: Let no one grieve at his poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed. Let no one mourn that he has fallen again and again; for forgiveness has risen from the grave. Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free. He has destroyed it by enduring it. -- St. John Chrysostom One day, St. Francis of Assisi was walking down the street with a woman who told him she did not love God and that she had no intention of ever obeying God. St. Francis didn t say anything in reply to her but just kept walking down the street with her. Finally, they passed a man who was born blind and crippled. St. Francis asked him, Were I to give you sight and enable you to walk, what would your response to me be? The man eagerly said, I would love you and be your servant forever. St. Francis turned to the woman and quietly said, You just heard him. He would both love me and obey me. So, why don t you cherish, love and obey the Almighty God who has so generously given you life, given you sight and has given you the ability to walk? Springs seems to have arrived, and with Easter Sunday and Opening Day only a few weeks away, I came to a realization this past weekend that I have to share with you. I don t really want to share this realization with you but I feel that I have to share this realization. It s simply this Cubs fans are naturally predisposed to be good Catholics. Yes, I actually said that. I know it s difficult for a good White Sox fan to realize this let alone share it with other people but all of us Sox fans need to admit it - Cubs fans are naturally predisposed to be good Catholics. I realized this as I was speaking to a young man from our parish (who is a die-hard Cubs fan) about the upcoming season. He was going on and on about Joe Madden, their new manager, and how he was going to lead them to the World Series. He told me that Anthony Rizzo will be an all-star this season, that Kris Bryant will be the rookie of the year and that Jon Lester will win the Cy Young award. I told him that s the problem with you Cubs fans; you always think you ve found your savior. First, it was Mark Pryor and Kerry Woods who were going to save the Cubs. Then, it was Don Baylor, then it was Dusty Baker, then it was Lou Pinella, then it was Starlin Castro, then it was Theo Epstein and now it s Joe Madden, Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant who are going to save the Cubs. So why are Cubs fans naturally predisposed to be good Catholics? Because they realize that they are in desperate need of a savior. Let me repeat, a very desperate need of a savior. But, you know what, we are all, each and every one of us, is in desperate need of a savior. The thing to remember is that there is only one savior, Our Lord Jesus Christ (none of the names above are names of the savior). We are created by God, we are given life by God, we are given sight by God, we are given faith by God and we are given free will by God. The Catholic faith is more than just a religion, it s more than just going to Mass, it s more than just praying every day, it s more than just believing, it s more than just being nice to people, it s more than just reaching out to people. It is a way of life, it s a way of living every single moment of our lives in relationship to our Lord and Savior, it s a way of putting Christ Jesus at the center of all we do, all we say and all we think. It s an understanding that we are in desperate need of a savior, our Lord Jesus Christ, and that we are dependent on him for our very existence. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will, for the praise of the glory of God's grace that he granted us in the beloved. In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace that he lavished upon us. In all wisdom and insight, he has made known to us the mystery of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in him as a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth. Celebrating the Year of Consecrated Life Lenten Food Drive Part of our Lenten practice as Catholics is alms giving. Why not make part of your alms giving by donating food for the hungry? Please bring non perishable food items to the narthex of the church during Lent. The only collection date is the weekend of March 21 st and 22 nd. Food collected will help restock the food pantry at St. John the Baptist. Thank you for feeding the hungry. Volunteers needed to box food donations on March 22 nd at noon in the church. 7 Giant Steps in Tradition- What a celebration we will have on April 24 th! The Auction Committee is hard at work on this year's big event, "Giant Steps in Tradition". In keeping with our goal of including everyone's participation, we've asked the students to contribute to the event and have challenged them to bring in spare change and fill their classroom jars! 100% of the proceeds go towards the auction. Prizes will be awarded to the top three classes: 1 st Place: Pizza Party 2 nd Place: One day of out of uniform shoes 3 rd Place: Extra Recess Give a Little Shout Out!
