3 Eleventh Sunday Ordinary Time June 17, 2012 Faith of Our Fathers This Father s Day I find myself reminiscing about my Dad, and thanking God for the time we had with him. My sister and three brothers and I were blessed with a Dad who was a man of patience, fortitude, and wisdom. Dad worked hard, never missing a day of work, a steady rock of a man who lived his life for God and family. As a young man during the Depression, he learned how to make do with far less than families have today. He knew that time with his family was far more precious than expensive toys and electronics or fast cars, fancy clothes, and expensive trips. He took us camping, he took us fishing, he took us out for dinner or ice cream occasionally, and he took us to church every Sunday for Mass. I don t mean almost every Sunday, but every Sunday no matter where we were. Dad was an Eagle Scout who loved the outdoors, so he took us on long cross-country camping trips. No matter where we were in our summer travels, we found a place to attend Sunday Mass: in a cave in Kentucky, in a woodland cathedral in the Wisconsin north woods, in a Hudson Bay trading post in Ontario accessible only by boat, in a Disney Land hotel lobby, in a little church along the shore in Newfoundland with fish on drying racks nearby, in a lodge in Yellowstone, and in countless churches in the 35 states and six provinces we travelled in our summer journeys. When we were home during the rest of the year, we went every week to our parish for Mass. Mom and Dad were founding members of our parish, and Mom taught at our parish elementary school for over 20 years. They made sure that all five of us attended Catholic schools, including our parish grade school, area Catholic high schools, Quigley seminary for the oldest, and Catholic universities for two of us. Dad was the third of seven children. I had 25 first cousins on his side of the family. Some of my cousins have very similar memories of their Dad living his beliefs and passing the Faith on to his children. I never knew my grandfathers: they died long before I was born, but I suspect that Grandpa set the precedent by bringing his six sons and one daughter up in the Faith in the same way. What a precious gift it is for a Dad to be the spiritual leader of the family. I thank God for both of my parents and the gift of faith that they passed on to us. I pray that all the Dads in our parish and school community have the fortitude and wisdom to live the Faith and pass it on to their children. Happy Father s Day! Mrs. Mary Kay Robbins, Principal

Brand new canopy at the south east church entrance courtesy of some vandals that sliced up the old one. Bigger windows sure look nice! Tuck pointing of the church has been happening since last fall shoring up masonry issues and preventing leaks around windows Concrete work will be taking place from June 10 th through the 30 th to repair some broken curbs, sidewalk issues and put in an acceptable ramp from the rectory including hand rails. Asphalt paving cutouts and repairs being done before the end of the month. We want to extend our sincere appreciation to Pat Ruth of Northern Illinois Steel for donating the new railing to be erected on the north side of the school along with the concrete repairs. Just another way to keep our parish in the best shape possible. Have a beautiful summer! Seeds that take root in one season eventually start to show signs of life. Fields once dormant become verdant. 7 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor. At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ's total gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God's own life. We are to become what we receive: the body of Christ. On Sundays, this self-giving is often accompanied by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more efficient.
