3 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 22, 2010 Strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight paths for your feet, That what is lame may not be disjointed but healed. Hebrews 12:12-13 The New Mass The first Eucharistic Prayer, or the Roman Canon as it's traditionally called, is a rather long prayer for a reason that many people find obscure and perhaps even tiring, but which shows its ancient living heritage: its emphasis on naming many saints. Whereas the newly composed Eucharistic Prayers name only Mary and the apostles, the Roman Canon includes two long lists of saints at both the beginning and the end of the prayer (sort of like bookends). In communion with those whose memory we venerate, especially the glorious ever-virgin Mary, Mother of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ, and blessed Joseph, Spouse of the same Virgin, your blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Peter and Paul, Andrew, [James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon and Jude: Linus, Cletus, Clement, Sixtus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Lawrence, Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian] and all your Saints: through their merits and prayers, grant that in all things we may be defended by your protecting help......to us, also, your sinful servants, who hope in your abundant mercies, graciously grant some share and fellowship with your holy Apostles and Martyrs: with John the Baptist, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, [Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicity, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia] and all your Saints: admit us, we beg you, into their company, not weighing our merits, but granting us your pardon, through Christ our Lord. Many people find these two long lists boring (and for that reason, after Vatican II it was permitted for priests to omit a number of these saints for the sake of brevity). Why are these long lists of saints part of this ancient prayer? Every Sunday in the Creed we proclaim our faith in the communion of saints; for the early Christians, this was no abstract doctrine but a living family heritage. It was an awareness that those living today in the faith are one with those who have gone before us in faith. The saints are part of our family. The two lists in the Roman Canon include the obvious big saints like Mary, Joseph, John the Baptist, and the apostles, but what about the others? Many of the other names, such as Sixtus or Marcellinus, for example, are unfamiliar to us today. In fact, these are all Roman saints; the tombs of these very people are in the city of Rome with churches standing on top of their graves. For ancient Romans, these were household names and heroes. Even today, modern day Romans walk by the shrines built over the tombs of these people daily. The Roman Canon, originating in the lived spirituality of the of Rome, is calling upon the family saints of the local church, showing that there is still a very real connection with these holy people. The prayer shows us that when we pray, we are one with the saints and those saints intercede for us and come to our aid in time of need. The consists of more than those now living in this world; it also is made up of those who now see God face to face. We enjoy a fellowship now within the communion of saints and we hope that the Lord will admit us...into their company for all eternity. MORE DETAILS TO COME Classes To Become Catholic..RCIA The process for becoming Catholic will begin Sept. 12, Faith formation sessions will take place during the 10:30am Mass every Sunday. The sessions will be held in the Convent north of the. As the year proceeds, candidates will attend the first half of the Mass and will be dismissed for class which will last until 12:15. Those who participate will be received into the at the Easter Vigil April 23, Candidates who wish to be received into the need to have a brief interview before starting the process. Persons who are eligible are those who have never been baptized, baptized in another Christian denomination, or baptized Catholic but who did not receive First Communion or Confirmation. All about the Parish Picnic..August 29 at Noon...At St. Joe s Park As you know, our annual parish picnic is on August 29 th. We hope you are planning on coming out to enjoy the food, fun, and music. This year there will be a Polka Mass at 11:00 am., Bob Doszak will be playing from 12:30-3:30, DJ/Karaoke entertainment from 3:30 5:00 and Sundance will play from 5:00-9:00. Inflatable's will be available for the kids as well as face painting and other activities. Are you ready for one of those famous chicken dinners? If not, brats, hot dogs, pizza, or pork chop sandwiches will be waiting for you. The planning committee would like to thank all of you who have already contributed to this worthwhile cause by selling raffle tickets, being patron donors, or signing up to work. Some have done all three! We truly appreciate all of the support that you have provided thus far. We can always use more help though. If you have not become a patron donor yet, you still have time. All patron donations need to be in by August 23 rd. Raffle tickets may be turned in at any time even at the picnic. So keep selling those tickets. Extras may be picked up at the Parish Office or after the Masses this weekend and next. Finally, we can still use workers for the day (Bingo is in airconditioning!).
