2 Dear Parishioners, Thank you to everyone who participated in the Candlemas Mass and meal last Saturday! We had a great turn out for both. I hope the Mass lifted your spirit a little higher towards God and that the meal was a good opportunity for fellowship. A special word of thanks to the servers, schola, and altar society for the hard work they put into preparing for the Mass and the Basinger, O Malley, and Schultz families for preparing and organizing the meal. Married couples, please consider joining us for the CHERISH retreat evening, Friday, February 15. Our presenter, Father Peter martyr Yungwirth grew up here in Hagerstown and now is a priest of the Order of Preachers, commonly known as the Dominicans. It promises to be a great evening! Finally, please also consider joining me and many others in Annapolis on Thursday, February 21, for Catholic in Annapolis. Many of you have come to me with your concern and outrage at the new law in New York that allows abortion to take place up until the day of birth. Here in Maryland, your help is needed this year to stop a proposed pro-abortion constitutional amendment, to help secure scholarships for low-income students, to stop the legalization of assisted suicide, and to protect human rights. I realize that it is a big sacrifice of time to spend the better part of the day going to, in, and returning from Annapolis. But please consider that it is a very effective way of making our voices heard our representative themselves say so! There is more information on the last page of the bulletin, including how to sign up for the bus that leaves from St. Mary s at 11:00 am (no charge for this service!). May God bless you and keep you in His care, and may the Blessed Mother intercede for you, Father Cibelli Please pray for Francis Joseph Bud Williams, husband of Judith. May he rest in the Peace of Christ!

Benedict XVI Eucharist A meeting for parents of children in St. Mary Parish and St. Michael Parish, who will be receiving the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time, will be held on Wednesday, February 13 at 6:30PM in the Parish Center. Both parents are urged to be present for this important meeting; one parent must attend. At the same time that the parents are attending this meeting, a workshop for the children will be held in the school cafeteria. Parents must be active, participating parishioners for 1 year. Right to Life: -- There's an abortion facility in Hagerstown at 160 W. Washington St, Suite 100, just 3 doors from St. Mary Church, and there's a serious need for adults and children to be there praying for a change of mind of those entering. There's an opportunity for sidewalk counseling if you're comfortable doing that, but first, prayer at the site is very powerful. Volunteers are needed 2 days each week form 9 to 11 AM: every Thurs & every other Tues from 9 to 11 AM; every other Sat from 9 to 11 AM. Open Tues, Feb 12 & 26; Thurs, Feb 14, 21, & 28; Sat. Feb. 23 We also need another "shift" to stay until the women come out after the abortion so we can provide some help. Please Janet Neel dneel@myactv.net. A Note of Thanks from Mary s Center! Mary s Center wishes to thank all who participated in the Baby Bottle Campaign. The amount collected for Mary s Center totaled $3,075. Your generosity to this campaign is so wonderful! The monies are put to good use to assist the women who come to Mary s Center for basic necessities for their babies and toddlers. Your kindness allows us to provide the help needed by the less fortunate among us. God will surely bless you for your generosity!
5 Father, Why do we put a veil over the chalice? The chalice veil, which was part of every Mass before the Second Vatican Council, fell into disuse after the Council because some clergy opted not to use it. However, it is considered praiseworthy by the current edition of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (#118), which gives us the rubrics for celebrating Mass. The chalice veil reminds us of the veil in the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. The Temple veil separated the Holy of Holies from the sanctuary. The Holy of Holies was the most sacred part of the Temple for it housed the Ark of the Covenant and was the dwelling place of God among His people. The Holy of Holies was so sacred that only once a year and only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies to ask forgiveness for the sins of the people. When Jesus died on the cross, the Gospel of Matthew (27:50-51) tells us Jesus again crying with a loud voice, yielded up the spirit. And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent. The veil of the Temple that kept God hidden from the Jewish people, was ripped in two from the top, showing that God had now made it possible for everyone to see God. St. Pope John Paul II reminds us in his wonderful encyclical, Ecclesia de Eucharistia #12(the Church of the Eucharist), of the ancient tradition that The Mass makes present the sacrifice of the Cross; it does not add to that sacrifice, nor does it multiply it [it] makes Christ s one, definitive, redemptive sacrifice always present in time. Therefore, the chalice veil reminds us of that veil of the Temple. When the priest removes that chalice veil, it is God s invitation for us to enter into His Holy Presence. In the Eucharistic Prayer, the priest makes the sacrifice of Calvary present on the altar and so invites us to enter into the Holy of Holies, to enter into God s presence in a most profound, personal, physical, and intimate way in Holy Communion. Ask The Priest is a continuing feature of the Bulletin. If you have a question regarding the Catholic faith, please place your question in the box on the back table. Snow Tubing At Whitetail Resort, Mercersburg Pa. ***OUR PREVIOUS TRIP WAS CANCELLED*** ***PLEASE NOTE THE NEW DATE!*** All 8th 12th graders welcome! 6 Please join us at St. Mary Catholic School for Pre-School Story time! February 11, :10-12:40 p.m. This is a great time for your child to hear some wonderful stories. Mrs. Jeanie Stark will be reading the children a new book each month. An activity and snack related to the story will be provided. There is no charge for this event and it lasts about 30 minutes. (Children ages 3-5 are invited, and parents will stay with the children during story time.) February's book is "The Hat" by Jan Brett. Catholics in Annapolis is February 21! Join Catholics from across Maryland at Catholics in Annapolis on Thursday, February 21 to stand up for life, justice and human rights. Catholics in Annapolis is your chance to get inspired and meet face-to-face with your legislators to share with them the Church's position on important issues. Your help is needed this year to stop a proposed pro-abortion constitutional amendment, to help secure scholarships for low-income students, to stop the legalization of assisted suicide, and to protect human rights. We need your voice in 2019! We will kick off the evening by praying the Rosary for our elected officials, led by Maryland s bishops. After that, you will hear from inspiring speakers on several key issues before heading into your legislators offices to meet faceto-face and share the Church s position. The evening will end with a reception with beer, wine, and food from Light House Bistro Catering a social enterprise of the Light House Homeless Prevent Support Center, an Annapolis nonprofit that provides shelter, employment and opportunities to individuals experiencing homelessness. Catholics in Annapolis is free, but registration is required. Visit to register. Or call the Maryland Catholic Conference at for more information. Need a ride to Catholics in Annapolis?
