An Upright Heart in Challenging Times Four years ago, when the Meitler Consulting Group performed a study of the Diocese of Joliet, it was noted that most young adults across the nation who were raised in the Catholic Faith considered themselves to be spiritual rather than religious. While they have an interest in personal spirituality, people in their twenties and early thirties tend to have little interest in participating in formal religious practices, in having their children baptized, or in considering a Catholic education for their children. Here at St. Paul the Apostle School, we are beginning to feel the effects of that trend: our pre-school, kindergarten, and first grade classes are noticeably smaller as we close out the pre-registration process for next year, and most of the students in those classes are younger siblings of existing students, rather than the oldest children of new younger families. As a result, we are forced to lay off several teachers due to decline in enrollment, even as we continue to work to build interest in our school among young families between now and August when the new school year starts. My son John recently turned thirty; his daughter will be two years old in May. He told me recently that when he and his wife attended the Baptism class in their parish in Dubuque two years ago, they felt strangely out of place, since as very active members of their parish, they found it odd that all the other couples in the class were total strangers. It seemed that most of their classmates were having their children baptized only because they were pressured to do so by the grandparents. In his own faith journey, John had sought out information about the Catholic on the Internet, the preferred source of information for most members of his generation. He thought that a website listing a variety of resources about the Faith might be helpful to others who were looking for the truth, for answers to their own questions about the Catholic. He spent many hours over the last two years searching for reliable sources of information about our Faith and compiling them on a user-friendly website. You can find his listing at An upright heart: it is an interesting concept, based on Sacred Scripture, as are all the teachings of the Catholic. If you are searching for more information about the, take some time to check out the list of resources on the website. Better yet, if you know some young parents who are hungry for the truth, please pass the name of the website on to them. You might also spread the word about the new app from the diocese called We Parent More. Its name is closely aligned with the diocesan schools logo, We Teach More. This free app is compatible with i-phones and droids, and includes many resources for parents of young children. We are living in an age of increased violence and disregard for the sanctity of human life, sacramental marriage, and simple respect for others. You see that in the extreme in popular television shows, movie trailers, video games, and pop music. The Catholic is truly counter-cultural as the one institution that provides us with the constant real presence of Christ in our world. Share the Faith with a young family you know through and We Parent More. Mrs. Mary Kay Robbins, Principal

On trial, they refused to stop teaching in Jesus name, and they rejoiced at the opportunity to suffer for their beliefs. On the lake and its shore, face to face with the Risen Lord, they obeyed his directions and recognized him as he once again ate a meal with them. There are so many human and almost homey touches in these readings! The high priest in the first scene sounds as if he is scolding naughty students. There is an order to stop speaking in Jesus name, but it is evident everyone knows they will disobey again. And on the lake shore, we can imagine Peter s excitement as he strides out of the water and is greeted by Jesus, who grins and says, Come, have breakfast. The second reading, on the other hand, is anything but homey. In this passage from Revelation, John describes a scene in which the same Lord who fed his friends breakfast here receives honor and glory from everything in the universe. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 7 St. Paul the Apostle Parish Welcomes Deacon and Mrs. John Freund Dear brothers and sisters, Twenty eight years ago, my wife Liz and I with our two young daughters moved to a town named Bloomingdale. I didn t even know there was such a place. The first and only church we checked out was St. Isidore. It didn t take long before both Liz and I got involved and we never slowed down. Now, twenty eight years later we moved again, this time to Joliet without our two, now grown daughters. Liz and I have been married for 35 years and as I mentioned have two grown daughters. We recently were blessed with our first grandchild, a little girl, Morgan Rose. I was ordained a deacon 15 years ago. Two years ago I was appointed by Bishop Sartain to the position of Director of the Office for the Diaconate. I commuted the 27 miles to and from the diocesan offices, which is why we chose to relocate. This was one of the toughest decisions we ever made. We are now happy to be residents of Joliet, which is by the way, where my wife grew up. We have been checking out parishes (undercover) and found St. Paul the Apostle Parish a place that we could settle into. I look forward to working with Fr. Greg, Deacon Bill and the entire staff of St. Paul s. I also look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you. I like to hang around and chat with the folks. I also look forward to serving the people of St. Paul as one of the deacons. May the Risen Christ bless you with joy, love and peace. Your brother in Christ, Deacon John Freund CATHOLIC STEWARDSHIP In today s Gospel insights, we note that even after seeing the risen Lord and receiving his blessing and missionary charge, the apostles largely go back to what they were doing before Jesus first called them. Instead of continuing Jesus minis- try, they return to the life they knew. When faced with the choice between embarking on a new way of life or staying where life is familiar and comfortable, they chose the latter. Good stewards know that Christ has called them to open their hearts and live in a different way. How often do we retreat from the Lord s call so that we may remain with what is comfortable and familiar? Think how tired, discouraged and frustrated the apostles must have been in the Gospel reading today. Then Jesus shows up and tells them to try one more time; because they were willing and obedient, Jesus blessed them abundantly. It works the same way in our own lives today; if we trust in Jesus and do what He tells us to do we will receive His abundant blessings! Allow the grace of God to strengthen, renew and rekindle your marriage relationship. Attend the next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend on June 7-9, Contact Jim and Kris McCulloch, For more information visit our website at: wwmejoliet.org. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Gospel today sees Peter and his colleagues after the Resurrection, returning to Galilee and resuming the family business. They are fishing by night. Although it is true that fish feed by night, the mention of darkness here is more about the human spirit than it is about fishing advice. Modern life keeps darkness effectively under control; much of the world has been glowing radiantly through the night for a century. Yet just as surely as the Risen Christ breaks into Peter's fishing, so does he break into the usual patterns of our own darkness, electric lights notwithstanding. It is Easter, and we are the people of the light. In our tradition, Evening Prayer, celebrated in monasteries, parishes, cathedrals, and homes everywhere, is a kind of solemn protest against the darkness and its claims, an act of praise for our light-bearing God, and a commitment to carrying that light forward. Sunset is a turning point of our day, felt less acutely in an electrified world, but still an effective reminder that one day darkness overtakes us all. Yet our Eastering has taught us in a hundred ways that the victory belongs to the Bearer of Light. Easter summons us to transform our everyday "blackouts," perhaps in a way as simple as a whispered prayer of thanks at evening for the blessings of the day. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S.
