3 FROM FATHER JOHN: "The confession of evil works is the irst beginning of good works." St. Augustine; To do penance is to bewail the evil we have done, and to do no evil to bewail. Pope St. Gregory the Great On Friday, September 12 th, I was recuperating from orthoscopic knee surgery at my parent s house. And, as I was doing so, I decided to pray the Of ice of Readings which is part of the Liturgy of the Hours. All priests, at their ordination, promise to pray ive of the seven hours each day on behalf of the and the People of God. I think I thought prayer would help relieve the pain from the surgery and it certainly did! The Of ice of Readings on that day contained a homily from Blessed Isaac of Stella who lived from 1100 until 1169 AD. I immediately thought that his homily would prove interesting not only to me but also to the people of our parish. Blessed Isaac was born in England but went to Paris for advanced studies. He decided to enter the Abbey of Citeaux, which was near the city of Dijon, France. (I m not sure, but that s probably where we get Dijon mustard from). By entering the abbey, he became a Cistercian monk. This all happened at the time that St. Bernard began his monastic reforms at the Cistercian monastery of Clairvaux. Blessed Isaac eventually became the Abbot of Citeaux and it was at Citeaux that he created his numerous theological works. He is known for his knowledge of philosophy, theology and for his deep spiritual insights. His homilies re lect his profound theological and spiritual thinking. Blessed Isaac makes the point in this homily that our Lord Jesus Christ will not forgive any sin without the ; that He in fact shares His power to forgive sins with the. I ind this interesting because people often ask me why do I have to go to confession? Can t I just pray to God on my own and be forgiven? I think Blessed Isaac s answer would be, no, you can t you need to go to the church and receive forgiveness of your sins through the sacrament of confession. Otherwise, your sins are not forgiven. His point is that Christ is unwilling to forgive sin without the involving the in the forgiveness of the sin because the is the Bride of Christ and Christ has shared everything given to him with his bride, the. In His humanity, our Lord Jesus Christ shares in the s cries of distress, in our cries of distress, in our weakness and, thus, the shares in the forgiveness of our sins. The prerogative of receiving the confession of sin and the power to forgive sin are two things that belong properly to God alone. We must confess our sins to him and look to him for forgiveness. Since only he has the power to forgive sins, it is to him that we must make our confession. But when the Almighty, the Most High, wedded a bride who was weak and of low estate, he made that maid servant a queen. He took her from her place behind him, at this feet, and enthroned her at his side. She had been born from his side, and therefore he betrothed her to himself. And as all that belongs to the Father belongs also to the Son because by nature they are one, so also the bridegroom gave all he had to the bride and he shared in all that was hers. He made her one both with himself and with the Father. Praying for his bride, the Son said to the Father: I want them to be one with us, even as you and I are one. And so the bridegroom is one with the Father and one with the bride. Whatever he found in his bride alien to her own nature he took from her and nailed to his cross when he bore her sins and destroyed them on the tree. He received from her and clothed himself in what was hers by nature and gave her what belonged to him as God. He destroyed what was diabolical, took to himself what was human, and conferred on her what was divine. So all that belonged to the bride was shared in by the bridegroom, and he who had done no wrong and on whose lips was found no deceit could say: Have pity on me, Lord, for I am weak. Thus, sharing as he did in the bride s weakness, the bridegroom made his own her cries of distress, and gave his bride all that was his. Therefore, she too has the prerogative of receiving the confession of sin and the power to forgive sin, which is the reason for the command: Go, show yourself to the priest. The is incapable of forgiving any sin without Christ, and Christ is unwilling to forgive any sin without the. The cannot forgive the sin of one who has not repented, who has not been touched by Christ; Christ will not forgive the sin of one who despises the. What God has joined together, man must not separate. This is a great mystery, but I understand it as referring to Christ and the. Do not destroy the whole Christ by separating head from body, for Christ is not complete without the, nor is the complete without Christ. The whole and complete Christ is head and body. This is why he said: No one has ever ascended into heaven except the Son of Man whose home is in heaven. He is the only man who can forgive sin. (From a Homily by Blessed Isaac of Stella)
