3 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 16, 2011 I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. Is 49-6b Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. Often in the quiet of our hearts when we feel God is close to us we say, Yes, Lord, here I am. I will do whatever you want. And we mean it! And then we begin to have second thoughts what will God want us to do and will we be able to do it? In today s first reading Isaiah tells us what God asked of him and I believe it is what God asks us to do too. God asks us to be His servant; in fact, we are called to be God s servant. But, wait a minute; we hear the voices around us Who wants to be a lowly servant doing tasks that no one else wants to do and being at the beck and call of someone else? Aren t we supposed to be #1? We should look out for ourselves and make sure we are the ones on top. Do we really want to be God s servant? Isaiah describes what the servant does for God. The servant is one who when others look at him or her will see God s glory. God wants His glory to shine through the servant and the servant will have courage and strength that comes from God. Further, the servant is to be a light to the nations bringing God s message of salvation to the ends of the earth. Being God s servant is an awesome task because many of God s servants were ridiculed, persecuted, and even put to death. Do we want that in our job description? At the same time being God s servant is a great honor that we don t deserve because there is nothing that we can do that makes us worthy of being God s chosen ones. Saying Yes, here I am. I want to be what you have called me to be ever since I was in my mother s womb. requires great trust, humility, and obedience to God s will. Thanks be to God that through our baptism God gives us the grace to be His servant. Through our baptism we as St. Paul says, have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy. When Jesus came to be baptized John saw the Holy Spirit come down upon Jesus. The Holy Spirit has come upon us and dwells within us. We are holy and God s glory shines out from us. At baptism we received the light of Christ symbolized by the lighted candle and we are to walk always as a child of light. It is in letting God shine through us by the way we live His values and by making God #1 in our lives, that others will come to know God s message. We truly are God s servants when others see God s glory shining out from us and the flame that burns brightly within us sparks others to believe that they, too, have been chosen by God from their mother s womb to be His servants. This isn t an easy task but are we up for it? God says we are. So Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. Sr. Karen Marie Lanigan Pray for the Sick Please remember the following people in your prayers who are seriously ill or who are suffering from long-term illnesses: Mason Briese, Eugene Oetter, Helen Locher, Gary Pausen, Erin Bartel, Harn Family, Cathy Buza, Jeanie Nunuue, Marianne Gulas, Amy Remallard, Laura Criel, Kurt Palmer, Nancy Zimmer, Marie Richards, Kay Prock, Lisa Savero, John Mowbray, Donald Karcz, Sr., Bernie Hastings, Rev. The readings tell us about God s relationship with Israel and John the Baptist s relationship with Jesus. Israel s relationship with God is so close, so intimate, that it is through Israel that God s salvation [will] reach to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:6). But we know from John the Baptist that for Israel to accomplish God s will, it must also recognize that Jesus is the Son of God. During these weeks we also get to know Jesus. 7 Why choose the Catholic? The top reason Catholics come back to the Catholic is an intense hunger for Christ in the Eucharist. The Catholic and the Eastern es are the only es that offer the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This is because of the priesthood, necessary for the consecration of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. The Catholic church boasts an unbroken succession through her Bishops to the original Apostles. In these tough economic times we need divine help more than ever and we have the real Christ, the son of God to strengthen us for the journey. Christ is always waiting to welcome us back in the most non-judgmental way. The Catholic offers us union with Jesus Christ in a number of ways: The Scriptures are proclaimed and explained at every Mass. When the Scriptures are proclaimed it is Christ who speaks to each of us individually, in our individual circumstances of life. He is present in prayer. He is present in the Community of faith gathered every Sunday. Christ is present in the other 6 sacraments. It is Christ who Baptizes and invites us through this Sacrament to live as a child of God. It is Christ who forgives us our sins in the Sacrament of Confession or Reconciliation. All the Sacraments, in fact are a meeting with Christ who empowers us along life s journey with his divine grace. The Catholic offers spiritual support in good times and bad. It offers divine wisdom which is thousands of years old from people just like YOU who lived in each and every century throughout Christian history: 33AD, 100AD, 800AD, 1000AD, 1300AD, 1964AD and 2005AD. It offers meaning and purpose in this life and the promise of eternal life with Him after death for those who persevere to the end. Consider coming home to the Catholic. This also applies to those baptized in another Christian community as well. You'll know you are home when you begin to feel a deep sense of peace. Call Father Greg if you want more information Keep Faith. Support the in Latin America Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I would like to thank all those who make it possible in one way or another for me to go ahead with my formation. It will take many years to rebuild the in Haiti, and the Collection will support it every step of the way. Please be generous in the Collection for the in Latin America and keep faith.
