3 THANK YOU FROM FR. GREG 11th Sunday Ordinary Time June 16, 2013 This last month has been such a humbling experience for me as so many of you have shown me such signs of affection and kindness as I have prepared to move to my new parish. I want to offer my profound gratitude for so many tokens of love: the cards, gifts, pictures, parties, prayers...all those things that express the warmth of your hearts. If a parish can be thought of as an extended family of faith, you have truly made me feel the love of a family in these past weeks. THANK YOU! It has been such a joy to visit with you individually as we bade our farewells and looked back on these many years together, particularly in the gatherings after the Masses last weekend (and deepest thanks to Lynne Passarella and Denise Rowan for organizing and staffing the Tower Room receptions!). I offer up prayers of thanks to Almighty God for you all! Fr. Greg Learn Scripture with the Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet: Three Sites Open to New Students! The acclaimed Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet is expanding this fall, opening a new site at Saints Peter and Paul Parish (in Naperville). The two current sites, at Notre Dame Parish (in Clarendon Hills) and St. Anthony of Padua Parish (in Frankfort), are also welcoming new students. If you want to learn Scripture in a truly engaging manner, with a teacher and from a solidly Catholic perspective, the Biblical Institute promises you an enriching experience! Come to one of the three preview events (Wednesday, June 26 and Tuesday, August 27 at Saints Peter and Paul; Wednesday July 10 at St. Anthony) to meet teachers and current students. For more information about the Biblical Institute and these preview events, go to: reo and click on Biblical Institute. Or call the diocesan Religious Education Office at

6 Prayer Service The Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate and their Associates (Joliet Franciscan Sisters) invite you to join them for an hour of prayer and reflection focusing on the theme Justice for All: Raising the Light. The evening prayer, Raising the Light, will take place on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Joliet Franciscan Center, 1433 Essington Road, Joliet, Illinois. Come join us! For more information, please call x104. Be Protectors of God's Gifts! At his installation as Pope on March 19, 2013, Pope Francis preached the following words, which show us why we as a reject abortion and euthanasia, which kill the vulnerable rather than protect them: "The vocation of being a protector is not just something involving us Christians alone; it also has a prior dimension which is simply human, involving everyone. It means protecting all creation, the beauty of the created world, as the Book of Genesis tells us and as Saint Francis of Assisi showed us. It means respecting each of God s creatures and respecting the environment in which we live. It means protecting people, showing loving concern for each and every person, especially children, the elderly, those in need, who are often the last we think about. It means caring for one another in our families: husbands and wives first protect one another, and then, as parents, they care for their children, and children themselves, in time, protect their parents." Let s pray for life and let s work to defend life. Every human life from conception to natural death. Especially the lives of those who are weak and most vulnerable the elderly, the sick, the handicapped, the child in the womb, the hungry and the poor. ~ Most Reverend José Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles, California, Speech to the Youth Rosary Rally of Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary High School, May 1, Dear St. Paul the Apostle, The Illinois House tonight adjourned its spring legislative session without calling Senate Bill 10 for a vote. SB 10 calls for the state to change its legal definition of marriage from "between a man and a woman" to "between two persons." The legislation passed the Illinois Senate on Feb. 14, 2013, and was the subject of a contentious battle in the House. State Rep. Greg Harris, D-Chicago, sponsor of SB 10, announced tonight that he would not call the measure for a vote, and asked his fellow lawmakers to return to their districts, talk to their constituents about the issue, and return in October to possibly vote on the measure. We want to thank you for the calls you made and the s you sent to your state representatives. Your efforts made the difference. We sincerely appreciate your support! The Catholic Conference of Illinois
7 RICA- Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The Process of Becoming Catholic We will begin interviews for those who wish to begin the Process Of becoming Catholic this Fall during the months of June, July and August. Please call Roberta Lemke at for more information. This includes the following persons: Those seeking Baptism Those baptized Catholics seeking Holy Communion and Confirmation. This process of conversion will begin after Labor Day. Classes will take place at 10:30 AM each Sunday. God sent his only begotten Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. Jesus loved us, and gave himself up for us so that we who have been forgiven of much, could love much. We are called to reach out and love others with the Love of Jesus. Allow Love to strengthen, renew, rekindle and even transform your marriage sacrament. Attend the next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend on August 10-12, Contact Jim and Kris McCulloch, For more information visit our website at: wwmejoliet.org. WILL YOU BE A TUITION ANGEL PLEASE! Each year help is given by our parish through thousands of dollars of financial aid given to needy families; help is also given by the Marconi Scholarship to families who have encountered financial strain due to medical issues. Now there is another avenue of help: the Tuition Angels fund. People can become tuition angels by donating money to help either specific families or simply to fortify the general fund which will then portion out assistance according to need. Throughout the year families who are able reach out to those who are unable and your generosity is remembered always. What better gift than to allow a child to continue their education, based in faith and filled with care. Thank you for your consideration and participation in this worthy endeavor. May God bless you and yours. Vocation Reflections from Parents How did you first respond when your son told you he d like to enter seminary? Our first response when Jim decided to enter the seminary was acceptance. That is not to say that we weren't a bit apprehensive or a little saddened at "what could have been,"but we accepted his decision. Our thought was that God is in control here. Jim is first and foremost a child of God, and if God was calling him to the priesthood, who were we to stand in the way? We also felt that we had followed God's call to the married life. That was our call and our decision. We wouldn't dare to assume to know our son's calling more than he did. This was his decision, his journey. As he enters his fourth year in seminary, we are at complete peace with his decision and truly feel this is where he belongs. Peg Olofson, mother of Jim Olofson 4 th Year College, St. Walter, Roselle Catholic Homeschool Conference July 26 & The Immaculate Heart of Mary Chicago Homeschool and Parent Conference will be held at North Central College RRC Building, 440 S.
